MICHAEL FAUCI RETURNS TO GOLD CUP, HAS BIG WEEKEND IN OHIO

Fauci wins $750 in Senior Pro Gas racing; Lee, Murry, Manning, Wells and Demattia all score multiple feature wins at Baker Racing Engines Gold Cup Nationals

Round three of the 2013 World Karting Association RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series took place July 5-7 at the historic G&J Kartway in Camden, Ohio, a tight little sprint course nestled in the farmlands in the southwest corner of the Buckeye State.

The Baker Racing Engines Nationals marked the Gold Cup’s return to Camden after not visiting the track in 2012. The series has visited G&J on a semi-

regular basis since 1996. The venue provides a good location for most Gold Cup teams as its

centrally located and not a terribly far drive

for most.

Most Western New York and Mid-Atlantic-based teams can reach Camden just over seven hours, and for the Georgia and north Florida contingent the track isn’t nearly as far as their previous drive to South Bend, Indiana. Of course, the drive to G&J is a “hop, skip and a jump” compared to most tracks for the Midwest-based Gold Cup families and teams.

A total of 182 entrants filled the pits at G&J for the Gold Cup. While certainly not earth-shattering numbers, the event did see a rise in entries from the previous round at JET Karting in South Bend, and bright spots included 17 entrants in Friday’s Senior Animal Money Race, 13 karts in the new Senior Pro Gas class Saturday and Sunday and a dozen youngsters in the Sportsman Pro Gas divisions.

Mother Nature made her presence known at Camden. Consistent rain forced most of Saturday’s racing to be run in wet conditions. Teams pulled out and mounted their Bridgestone rain tires and made the appropriate setup changes to get their mounts handling in the rain. For many Gold Cup racers, it marked the first time they ever competed in the rain.

Georgia racers Tanner Lee and Dylan Murry led the way with four and three feature wins, respectively, but arguably the best weekend belonged to New York’s Michael Fauci, who made his return to the Gold Cup Series after an extended break and swept the Senior Pro Gas Animal main events to take home the $500 prize to the best overall Senior Pro Gas finisher on the weekend.

We’ll start with Fauci’s wins in Senior Pro Gas. The class has continued to gain popularity in its inaugural season on the RLV Gold Cup circuit, and at Camden 13 drivers entered included a number of new faces to the Gold Cup.

On Saturday, Fauci wheeled his No. 95 Coyote to wins in the heat and feature after a second-place qualifying effort to fellow Coyote racer Josh Stiefel.

Fauci won the heat by several kart-lengths over 2-cycle regular Cal Stewart, who was making his second Gold Cup appearance of the season. Fauci dominated the main event, winning by a huge 11-second margin over another 2-cycle regular who’s been racing 4-cycles recently, Kyle Prokup.

Dylan Zobkiw crossed the stripe third with Florida’s Patrick O’Neal and Michigan’s Jeffrey Beatty rounding out the top five.

Fauci got the broom out Sunday in Senior Pro Gas Animal, sponsored by Coyote / Razor and Margay chassis. The New Yorker took the pole at a 42.204, won the heat over Stewart and went on triumph in the main event by a 0.494-second margin over Stewart.

Zobkiw took third for the second day in a row. The pair of third-place runs was good enough to net Zobkiw a cool $250 for the second-best overall result of the weekend. Michael Prokup Jr., another 2-cycle racer who’s now trying his hand at 4-cycle racing, was fourth. Chris Osgood rounded out the top five.

Razor Chassis driver Tanner Lee added another four wins to his growing total in the Gold Cup Series.

Lee’s biggest win came in Junior Medium,





which saw him start sixth and make his way past Sarah Luoma for the lead and pull away for a 0.799-second win. Luoma finished second. Tyler Stiefel was third, Dustin Demattia fourth and Tyler Woods fifth.

Lee picked up the win in Saturday’s Razor / Roberts Kart Shop Junior Pro Gas Animal 1 feature. Lee bested Woods for the score. Demattia and Cason Konzer were third and fourth.

And Lee swept the Junior Clone main events, albeit he was the only kart entered. The Clone divisions

continue to struggle for entries when the Gold Cup Series goes north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Another Georgia racer took home three top prizes at

Camden. Dylan Murry scored wins in both Sportsman 2 Clone events and Saturday’s Baker Racing Engines Sportsman Pro Gas Animal 1 main event.

Murry won over Zach Wells in Saturday’s Sportsman 2 Clone 1 contest. Cody Hall was third and Cade Frazier fourth.

On Sunday, Murry completed the sweep of the Sportsman 2 Clone category with the win in the weekend capper. This time Hall followed Murry


across the stripe with Wells third and Frazier fourth.

Murry’s biggest win clearly was the Sportsman Pro Gas 1 feature. Another strong 12-kart field of youngsters turned out for round three of the series. Murry was behind the eight ball from the get-go; he qualified fifth of 12 but made up ground in the 8-lap heat to finish a strong second behind pole-sitter Matthew Miller.

Miller ran into problems in the main event and had to settle for a disappointing 11th-place finish. Murry took advantage and with Zach Wells and David Kalb Jr. the trio separated themselves from the rest of the field.

Murry went on to win by a mere 0.093-second advantage over Wells. Kalb was third, right behind the top-two finishers. Nick Fauci claimed the fourth position and Joshua Stark rounded out the top five.

Wells was the driver to beat on Sunday in Sportsman Pro Gas competition. Wells time trialed fourth and wheeled his MGM chassis to the win over Murry and Jason Alder in the heat race. The main event saw Fauci

and Alder battling for the win but contact between the two forced Alder back several positions. Fauci would cross the finish line first, however he was penalized for the contact with Alder. The penalty placed Fauci fifth in the final running order and gave Wells the big win, his first ever in Sportsman Pro Gas since joining the class after the Jacksonville opener.

Alex Vrabel scored his best Gold Cup finish, taking second. Alder was third, Kalb fourth and Fauci fifth.

The Sportsman Pro Gas Animal point standings continue to be a point of focus in the Gold Cup Series. The national champion of the class will be awarded a brand-new fully loaded Coyote, Razor or Margay chassis, and after Camden Murry holds a 55-point lead over Fauci. Miller is third, 95 points back of Murry. Alder and Kalb currently round out the top five. Keep in mind drops have not been calculated.

Dustin Demattia scored a pair of wins while racing in his home state. Demattia wheeled his Bandit to the victory in MGM Chassis Co. Junior Heavy and Restricted Junior.





Demattia drove to a convincing seven-second win in Junior Heavy. Sarah Luoma took second and she was nearly four seconds in front of third-place finisher Spencer Sherman. Tyler Woods was fourth and Tyler Stiefel rounded out the top five.

Demattia won his second race in a row in the Restricted Junior division. The Ohio racer won handily over Stiefel, Woods and Sherman for his second win of the weekend.

A couple Coyote drivers won the other Junior classes at Camden. Luoma improved on her pair of runner-up finishes in Junior Medium and Junior Heavy to win Junior Lite. Luoma won the race in the rain over Demattia. The two waged in a spirited battle for the victory with Luoma getting the edge. Sherman was third and Tyler Stiefel fourth.

win.

Michigan’s Tyler Woods earned his first-ever Gold Cup national win. Woods raced his No. 66 Coyote to the win in Margay Racing Products Junior Pro Gas Animal 2. Woods crossed the stripe second to Demattia but Dustin was penalized for contact with Tanner Lee. Lee was credited with second, Demattia third and Cason Konzer fourth.

Four different drivers claimed wins in the four alcohol-powered Sportsman Animal divisions. Matthew Miller and Nick Fauci split the Sportsman 1 mains while Zach Wells and David Kalb Jr. each won a Sportsman 2 feature.

Miller continued his strong 2013 season with a win in the rain in Performance North Sportsman 1 Lite. The Maryland Bandit Chassis racer won by a close 0.248-second margin over Fauci while Jason Alder was only 0.405 seconds back in third. Trevor Vargo was fourth and Riley Kelley fifth.


The 10-year-old Miller talked about his win. “This was the first time I ever raced in the rain,” he said. “After qualifying fourth I finished third in the pre-final after spinning out. I moved into second on the start of the final and passed the #77 of Jason Alder on lap two. I led the remainder of the race, holding off challenges from Alder and Nick Fauci. I would like to thank my new sponsor, DAVAL, for coming on board for the G&J Kartway Gold Cup national.”

Fauci swept Sunday’s Sportsman 1 Heavy program in dry conditions. The Brockport, N.Y., racer won the Pole Award with a fast lap of 45.054 before besting Jason Alder in the heat and 12-lap main event. Alder crossed the stripe one second back of Fauci to earn the runner-up spot. Miller had to settle for third on this day with Vargo and Kelley completing the top five.

Wells won the Van-K Wheels Sportsman 2 Lite contest by a 0.432-second gap over Kalb. Wells and Kalb left the rest of the field as Cameron Clifford crossed the stripe over five second back in third. Adam Cornell was fourth and Joshua Stark fifth.

In Sportsman 2 Heavy, Kalb raced his sharp No. 11 Margay to a big win over Wells. Kalb made it look easy, driving out to a commanding four-second advantage over Wells before the checkered flag waved.

Stark was third, Cornell fourth and Clifford rounded out the top five.

Cale Hall and Nick Torres split the Sportsman 1 Clone main events. Hall won Saturday’s feature over Torres while Torres came back to take the win in Sunday’s main event over Hall.

SENIOR CLASSESMichigan’s Scott Kleman and Maryland’s Tyler Sandmeyer won races in the rain on Saturday. Kleman raced his red Coyote to the win in Coyote Motorsports Animal Lite over Travis Manning. Coyote Motorsports owner Jim Lipari was third and Cayla Chapman fourth.

Sandmeyer wheeled his No. 1 MGM to the Animal Heavy triumph. Ryan Bavineau was second on his Coyote with Joshua Stiefel third. Paul Headley and Case Hall completed the top five.

Manning raced to a big win in Sunday’s Animal Medium main event. Manning scored the victory by a close 0.306-second gap over Chandler Sherman. Sandmeyer was third, Kaytlyn Fauci fourth and Kleman fifth.

Manning also earned the win in Sunday’s





other Senior alcohol class, Margay Racing Products Animal Amateur Medium.

The Amateur class, which is reserved for racers who have never won a national championship, started eight karts and saw the same top two as Animal Medium. Manning crossed the stripe only 0.126 seconds in front of Sherman for the win. Bavineau was right there, as well, finishing only 0.294 seconds back of the winner. Justin Funkhouser was fourth and Case Hall rounded out the top five.

“I’d like to thank everyone who made this possible,” the 18-year-old MGM / GT

Machine racer said after his wins. “Special shoutout to my dad for a great kart and Chander Sherman and Ryan Bavineau for the great, hard racing.”

Bob Bates, Patrick O’Neal and Matthew Horst all won at Camden.

Bates won over Tim Stiefel in the Target Distributing Animal Masters feature. The 52-year-old racer wheeled a Kart City Performance-powered Bandit to the victory.

“Tim and I got together in the first corner,” Bates explained. “Tim had the faster kart; he just ran out of


laps before he could catch me. My grandson was born during the heat race, down in Louisiana.”

O’Neal and Horst split the Senior Clone main events. O’Neal won Saturday’s Senior Clone 1 while Horst took the win in Sunday’s Senior Clone 2 class.

The weekend kicked off with the increasingly popular MotoOption Friday Night Thunder Series.

Alex Vrabel won a brand-new radio-controlled truck for his win in the 10-lap Sportsman Pro Gas Shootout. Vrabel won over Murry, Wells, Kalb and Miller.

Tanner Lee won the Junior Pro Gas Shootout over Demattia. Tyler Woods was third and Cason Konzer fourth.

The Senior Animal Money Race boasted 17 entrants with Tyler Sandmeyer scoring the big win on his alcohol-powered Animal. Michael Fauci was the first Pro Gas Animal across the stripe. Fauci was second overall to Sandmeyer but earned a $250 bonus for winning the Pro Gas class. Cal Stewart was third,

Matthew Horst fourth and Michael Prokup Jr. fifth.

The top-five all received money for their efforts and every driver who entered the race received money or product.

Next up for the Gold Cup Series is round four, the GT Machine Grand Nationals August 23-25 at the popular Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, Pa.

The event should be a good one with $2,000 on the line for Senior Pro Gas racers, Grand National Eagle trophies for all feature winners and other awards and contingencies throughout the weekend.

The Gold Cup will close its 2013 campaign with a return to Rockingham Speedway in Rockingham, N.C., October 4-6.

06.23.2013 - Reno, NV. – Northern Nevada Kart Club had some strong winds in place for their race day, and those winds blew in 89 drivers from different regions to join them for the 4th round of racing in the 2013 WKA West Super Series!! Most drivers made the journey out to this same track for the 2012 series, but if they were thinking they knew the track layout, those drivers soon found that NNKC had paved the way to an amazing new feel to the same old track!! As the day broke for Race Day Sun-day, all drivers were in their pits and eager to grid up!!

HPV 1

10 drivers took to the track for their Qualifying ses-sion, and Round 3 champ Chase Farley definitely had to watch his back bumper because Clayton Williams was coming for his spot and set the bar high with a 54.965 fast lap!! Anthony Freese held tight to the spot behind Williams and drove a 55 second lap time, barely making it in ahead of Roy Fulmer!! Fulmer saw his opportuni-ty in the first Heat session, and got the hole shot, and

brought Tomas Mejia to the front of the group with him! Williams closed in on the 3rd position as

the drivers set up to start their Pre Final race.

Mejia jumped ahead of Fulmer, who had been busy trying to shake former champ Farley off of his bumper!! This was a battle to the bitter end and no one knew who would take home that 1st place trophy! Having felt that his title was in jeopardy, Farley finally found his way past Mejia and locked in his victory followed by Mejia, Fulmer, Branden Benedix, and Wyatt Couch!! Great driv-ing guys, you sure gave the crowd a nail biting race!!

Kid Karts

Wyatt Myers was also looking for another victory in Round 4 of the WKA West Super Series, but it was not about to just be handed to him! 4 ready drivers took to the track on Sunday in an attempt to take the top spot, but Myers set the fast lap for the Kid Karters in their Qualifying session, with a time of 1:11.776!! Myers’ time set him five tenths over Niki Dimitrov and Cash Hairston, who were also two tenths faster than Ethan Nascimento. Through the Heat session and the Pre Final, it looked like Myers had the win in the bag, but after he trailed away from the rest of the pack, (who had been busy battling it out behind Myers the entire day); Dimitrov high tailed it to the top of the leader board and


took the pole position from Myers!! Nascimento had an unfortunate twist also, and received a DNF for the Main event, which left Hairston to round out the Kid Kart finish in the 3rd position! Some amazing skills are being shown by these kids; remember these names because you are sure to hear them in the future!!

Clone Sr.

Round 3 was a brutal battle for the Clone Seniors, which made the expectation for round 4 in Reno, no different! Luis Tyrell gave it all he had last time and just couldn’t get by Jeff Nelson; Tyrell was determined to make it happen in this round, and started off right with a fast Qualifying time of 57.272!! Geoff Shaw also took a top qualifying spot, just four tenths behind Tyrell, and just one tenth ahead of former champ, Nelson!!! With 8 laps to go in the first Heat session, Tyrell got the jump to pole position and held off the pack behind him, led by Shaw, Brian Hill, and Nelson! These guys may have felt the added pressure from the bit of a gap that Tyrell had put between himself and their group, but he was not that far ahead which still meant it was anyone’s race!! Nelson inched his way closer to the top in the Pre Final, landing himself in the off pole position for the grid to the Main Event! Nick Grossi sat tight in the 3rd spot, next to Hill on the grid, and both had been ready and waiting for their next session! Tyrell got the lead again for the Main Event, with Hill hot on his heels! After 16 laps, Tyrell took the checkered flag victory over Hill, Grossi, Chad Nascimento, Harrison Mills, and Rob Nascimento and finished out the 4th round in the WKA West Super Series!! This class is always jam packed with excitement and anticipation, and so is their return for Round 5!!

HPV 2

Jason Pettit sure stuck it to his HPV 2 class in the last round of racing, and he continued to dominate over his class of 11 karts, with a hot Qualifying time of 51.437,

two tenths over Blake Milton, followed by Carter Her-rera! As they headed into the Heat sessions, it seemed as though Pettit’s luck had run out when he received a DNS placement, handing the pole position to Herrera, who was tailed by Eric Nascimento! Herrera did his best to hold off the pack but Nascimento, Callum Smith, and Blake Milton were too much to take on alone!! In an astonishing twist of events, Pettit had been able to fight his way back through the group, and kept a tight hold on to his 4th spot as the HPV 2 class gridded up for the Main Event. With 16 laps to determine a winner, it was up for grabs!! Herrera made his way up and rounded out the day with a 3rd place finish in front of Christian Peterson, and Michaela LaSpina. Pettit regained his top spot, and showed Milton his bumper as if to say “No way, not a chance at all that anyone is getting by me!!” Great racing for Round 4!!

Formula 80 Masters/80 Senior

As the excitement heated up, and the winds picked up, 9 drivers took the track to create a combined class of Formula 80 Senior and Formula 80 Master drivers!!!! Local Formula 80 Master driver Cody McKinney set the fast lap at his home track with a 49.667, and that time let everyone know who had the home track advantage!! Dan Harris brought in a time of 50.606 behind McKin-ney, and Steve Dow just behind him. Formula 80 senior driver Colin Katzakian set the pole with a 49.793, just one tenth faster than Ben Fisher, and Jon Ban!!! As Katzakian and McKinney both got comfortable in their

top spots, Ban, and Harris stayed hot on their bumpers and looking for a way in! Though Ban was not quite able to pass Katzakian, who took home the win for the seniors, he sat nicely in the 2nd finishing spot ahead of Eric Rumfalo! McKinney pulled away from the master drivers, and went home with a win securely under his belt. It is great to see so many shifter drivers back on the track, and anticipation continues to

build as Round 5 gets closer to its arrival!!

Jr. 1-2 Cycle/ Clone Jr 1

Returning champ, Tomas Mejia, traveled out to Reno in an attempt to drive off with another win, and started out the day with a fast lap of 56.728! Mejia was fast, but Roy Fulmer blew past Mejia with a 56.367, making that the time to beat for the Jr 1 2 Cycle class of 13! These drivers were also joined by local Clone Jr 1 driver, Joshua Chassing, who mixed it up with them all day long! Mejia continued to reign over the Jr 1 2 class in the Heat session, and Chase Farley moved behind Mejia like a shadow!! Fulmer had been fighting to break through the two, and when Farley was forced to take a DNF

placement after 7 of the 8 Pre Final laps, Fulmer was back in the top two. Clayton Williams was glued

to the back of Fulmer, just waiting for a mistake to be made in the Main Event!! After 16

laps of Mejia having been chased around by Fulmer for a position change up, Mejia slammed the door in Fulmer’s face and drove off into the sunset with his 1st place tro-phy riding shot gun for the car ride home!! Oliver Calvo made his way past Williams for the 3rd spot, and Farley in 5th; Clone Jr 1 driver Chassing, took home a victory for his class also!!

PRD Spec

7 PRD Spec drivers came out to Reno to battle it out once again, and Cabot Bigham had to work to get an-other victory for Round 4 because Matt Koerner broke in the first spot with a 50.605 fast lap, just two hun-dredths faster than Bigham!!! Shelby Sander was also not about to let a chance at the win out of her sight also, and brought in the 3rd spot on the grid for the first Heat session!! Bigham got the hole shot, and took the lead from Koerner, whose victory was short lived, which gave


Bigham another WKA West Super Series win!! Koerner fought to hold onto the second place spot all the way into the Main Event, where he was just not able to hold off Matt Chase, who moved in for the steal!! What a great race and intense mix up from this class!!!

Clone Sumo

To round out a great day of racing in Reno, spectators looked to the 10 kart field of Clone Sumo drivers, who took the track to Qualify, and set Josh Fleming up with a 59.430 hot lap!! Joe Provost was just three tenths off of Fleming, and Doug Lemmons brought up the top 3 fast times as the grid was set for the first Heat session! Fleming and Provost continued to dominate their class as Dusty O’Connell cruised by Lemmons to steal 3rd, but was shuffled back to 8th in the Pre Final. Josh Finkel-stein, and Michael Grossi had quietly made their way up through the field and held tight to the 2nd and 4th positions as they took the green flag for the Main Event!! Provost made his way back up to 2nd, just behind Flem-ing, and showed the rest of the class their bumpers as they pulled into the scales for the finish! O’Connell made a comeback to the 4th position, just behind J. Finkelstein, and Jason Cohick who took the 5th spot!! What a great race!!!

CONCORD, N.C. – The 2013 WKA VEGA / TS Racing Road Racing Series driven by Mazda Grand Nationals went off July 26-28 at the beautiful VIRginia International Raceway near Danville, Va., marking round six of this year’s national series and the third round of the Woodbridge Kart Club’s regional road racing series.

A strong turnout of 390 entries made the event a success for WKC and WKA, and it marked the second consecutive national road race that attracted an entry

count around 400. The Mid-Ohio Nationals in June surpassed the 400-entry plateau.

Road Racing teams from around the country – including Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Massachusetts, all parts of the Midwest and up and down the Mid-Atlantic region – moved into the VIR paddock Thursday evening and embarked on a full day of practice Friday.

A handful of local-option races took place Friday evening, the headliner being the Yamaha Sportsman Special money race that paid $300 to Chris Larson of Oklahoma, who overtook Ryan Hatcher late in the race for the top prize.

concerned Saturday morning with dark clouds showing their face and reports of steady rain in Martinsville, Va., about 35 miles from VIR. People around the pit area predicted only one or two races would get in before the rain hit, however, while dark clouds loomed throughout the day, the rain didn’t hit until the end of race group No. 6.

The sixth race was able to run the full 45-minute distance, but while retired karts and drivers were getting picked up before the start of race No. 7 – the day’s final event – rain picked up and dampened the entire VIR facility. Unfortunately for the shifter karts and TaG racers set to run the day’s final race, it had to be cancelled because of the steady rain falling.

Cloud cover and some intimidating clouds greeted racers Sunday morning but the skies cleared late morning and approximate 90-degree temperatures made it the hottest condition for a road race thus far in 2013.

Sunday’s six race groups were completed in their entirety, and most teams were loaded up and set to embark on their journey home by 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

Here’s a rundown of the weekend’s race at the Road

Race Grand Nationals.

Saturday Race 1Randy Fulks scored the weekend’s first Grand National win in Sleeper Racing Team 100cc Controlled Spec 1. Fulks, who’s won a number of races in the Spec division in recent years, bested former WKA Triple Crown champion Adam Myers for the win. Ageless veteran Jim Fry was third, Rick Fulks fourth and Sean O’Shea completed the top five of seven starters.

Matt Michel crossed the stripe first in Hoosier Racing Tire Yamaha Sportsman Lite but was disqualified in post-race tech. Michel’s misfortune gave the win to CKI racer Zack Clark, who recently competed in his first WKA Gold Cup event at G&J Kartway in Camden, Ohio. Tim Linthicum was second, Brian Ellis third and Massachusetts’ Fran Mazzucotelli fourth.

Ryan Hatcher traveled to VIR from his Oklahoma home and won Dart Kart Club 100cc Pipe Heavy. Ohio’s Mallory Davis finished second.

Saturday Race 2Jeff Metter and his 250cc-powered super kart had the fast Formula 125 racers covered in Unlimited Final 2. Metter scored the big

win over Arkansas’ Brian Wilhelm. Michael Lattos was third, Mitch White fourth and Derek Cuthbertson fifth.

The largest class of the day belonged to Stock Honda 1, which started 24 Honda-powered shifter karts. Veteran Byron “Bear” Rothenhoefer dominated the race, pulling away for the Grand National triumph over Sam Bocchino. John Sullivan was third, Philip Davis fourth and Bill Pyles fifth. Stephen Flatt had a terrific run to cross the stripe second but was DQ’ed in post-race tech. Rothenhoefer won a set of VEGA XH tires for his win, which was posted by series sponsor TS Racing.

Saturday Race 3This race was red-flagged and called complete just after halfway due to an accident involving Toni

Alexander. Toni was sore but otherwise OK.

Keith Buffo added another national triumph

to his collection with the win in TaG Final 1. The Massachusetts racer won over Gabriel Robleto. Justin Rodriguez was third, Joseph Brizzolara fourth and Clark A Gaynor fifth.

Adam Myers dominated the WKA Sprint Final 1 race with a big win over New Englander Ted Carbonaro. WKC regular Derek Somers was third, Eric Stockford fourth and Jim Sorrentino fifth.

MGM Chassis racer Zachary Linsell continued to prove he’s the top 4-cycle road racer in the country with his win in Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Sprint 335. Linsell scored the win over fellow MGM racer Sam Sheckells. Austyn Flurer was third, Blake Beattie fourth and Georgia’s Brent Hadden fifth in the 13-kart field.

Jonathan Tedder continued his fine 2013 season with a convincing win in Animal Sprint 385. Tedder pulled away for an easy win over Andrew Boyer.


Robert Garland was third, William Lewis fourth and Alexander credited with fifth.

Jeff Futch won the Open Sprint 1 local option and Rick Gilmore won the WKC Vintage Limited local option over Dwain Parks and Dick Charest.

Saturday Race 4One of the most competitive races of the day was AM Motorsports Yamaha Sportsman Heavy, which started 15 karts and many of the best enduro road racers in the country. Woodbridge Kart Club regular Jermie Bolt, racing in his home state, fended off the outsiders for a big Grand National triumph.

Matt Michel was second but was disqualified in post-race tech. Oklahoma’s Chris Larson crossed the stripe just behind Bolt for the runner-up position. Ryan Hatcher was third, Evan Bolt fourth and Wild Bill Holder fifth.

Wisconsin’s Don Chrzan had a terrific weekend and scored the win in The Agile Group, Inc. 100cc Controlled Final 1. Chrzan won over Sean O’Shea and Michael Tracy.

Saturday Race 5WKC hosted road races always feature a good field

of Streeter Super Stands Stock Leopard competitors and VIR was no exception. WKC regular Rebecca Taylor earned the big win over fellow club racer Clark A Gaynor. New Jersey’s Bryan Danieli was third, Don Guilbeault fourth and Aamir Hyder fifth. Fourteen karts took the green.

Michael Holman earned a big win in Heiser Trailer Leasing Yamaha Sportsman Sprint Final 1. Holman took advantage of Zack Clark spinning early in the race. Clark kept it going, however, but never could close within three seconds of Holman. Ohio’s Andy Leighininger followed Holman and Clark to take third. AJ Ellis was fourth and Stacey Holewski fifth.

Andrew Boyer won Yamaha Sprint Lite over Florida’s Jimmy Duguay. James Vandermuelen was third.

Jonathan Tedder won his second Grand National Eagle of the day with his triumph in Animal Limited Modified 385. Ben Morris was second, Charles Wilbur third and Toni Alexander fourth.

North Carolina’s Chris Kuley picked up another Animal Junior win, this time over Daniel Ring.

Alex Frazer bested JT Coupal and Kyle Cuthbertson in Junior Sprint Lite.

Desmond Lewis and Joe Cuslidge were Clone winners. Lewis took 335 and Cuslidge won 385 over Darren Greene.

Kamron Darling won LO206 385 and Bill Johnson won the Vintage USA 1 local option.

Saturday Race 6Kelly Lawrence continues to run fast with

his Komanche Formula 125 enduro. Lawrence had the speed again at VIR to best a competitive field. Michael Lattos was second, Mitch White third, Fran Mazzucotelli fourth on a 135cc open and Brian Wilhelm retired early and was credited with fifth.

Alabama’s Robby Harper earned another B Stock victory. Harper won the Grand National over Craig Keller. Ben Eberhardt was third and Scott Goodman fourth.


Don Chrzan scored win No. 2 on the day in KALL Racing Formula 100 Final 1. Chrzan dominated the race and won over North Carolina’s Paul Wyzga. Bill Miller was third, Michael Tracy fourth and Travis Miller fifth.

CKI racer Chris Larson scored the Dart Kart Club Yamaha Medium win over Brian Ellis, who’s been stationed in Germany recently with the US Air Force. Florida’s Lance Yunck, competing in his third class of the day, was third. James Rupert and Dan Stowell rounded out the top five.

Saturday Race 7As noted earlier, rain hit just before the day’s final race was set to go green and unfortunately for the 15 racers who waited all day to race, the event was rained out and competitors were awarded rain points.

Sunday Race 1Jeff Metter made it two for two in Unlimited competition at VIR with his win in the Sunday morning weekend capper. Metter won an eventful race that saw him and Robby Harper jump out to a big lead before Harper dropped out with mechanical issues around the 10-minute mark. Brian Wilhelm spent half the race to run down Metter only to spin in turn one as he looked low on the leader.

Then Scott Goodman ran down Metter and passed him for the lead. After leading several laps, Goodman retired from the race, handing the lead back to Metter, who went on to the victory. Michael Lattos was second, Mitch White third, Scott Hodges fourth and Harper was credited with fifth.

Brian Fisher and Stevie Young got a break in Stock Honda 2 when Saturday Stock Honda winner Bear Rothenhoefer threw a chain on the start. Fisher and Young pulled out to a big lead and crossed the finish stripe side by side with Fisher edging out the Virginia Tech student. Mark Nagy edged Greg Heberle for third. Dan Chalk rounded out the top five of 23 starters, the day’s largest class.

Sunday Race 2A host of classes took the green after the Sunday mandatory quiet hour.

Mike Kavanaugh scored the win in TaG Final 2 over Justin Rodriguez. Joseph Brizzolara was third, Gabriel Robleto fourth and Timothy Ferraro fifth.

New York’s Adam Myers swept WKA Sprint with his win in Final 2. Myers won by a comfortable margin over Massachusetts’ Jim Sorrentino. Ted Carbonaro was third, Eric Stockford

fourth and George Williams fifth in the eight-kart field.

Eighteen karts started MGM / Moon Power Animal Sprint 360 to make it the weekend’s largest class other than Stock Honda 1 and 2. MGM racers Zachary Linsell and Sam Sheckells pulled away from the rest of the field and put on a good show for fans. Linsell led early before Sheckells took the lead and led most of the second half of the race.

Sheckells led Linsell down the roller coaster coming to the checkered but Linsell gained a draft off Sheckells and swung past him coming to the checkered. Blake Beattie was third, Joey Kuley fourth and Ben Thomason rounded out the top five. Austyn

Flurer ran in the pack with Beattie, Kuley and Thomason but had to settle for sixth.

Darlington, South Carolina’s Rob Garland II scored the Grand National win in Animal Sprint 410. Garland won over Robert Garland and Steve Jeffers. Rich Dreher was fourth and Steve Johnson fifth.

Daniel Ring won Animal Jr Sprint Heavy when Chris Kuley retired with an exhaust problem on his Briggs Animal.

Jeff Futch won the Open Sprint 2 local option and Duane Eberhart won over Robert Anderson in the Vintage Euro local option.

Sunday Race 3One of the weekend’s best races belonged to Sunday’s third group. Randy Fulks failed to get off the grid for 100cc Controlled Spec 2, leaving the race to Adam Myers, Sean O’Shea, Jim Fry and Rick Fulks.

Myers led early before dropping out. Rick Fulks was running with Jim Fry and O’Shea before spinning in turn one. Fulks continued and ran down Fry and O’Shea. The three battled hard throughout the second half of the race before Fry spun in turn three on the last lap. Fulks and O’Shea battled it out over the last lap with Fulks edging O’Shea at the line for the Grand National Eagle. O’Shea took second, Jim Fry third, Lance Fry fourth and Myers fifth.

Ian E Morgan won 100cc Controlled Final 2 over Michael Tracy and Don Chrzan.

Seventeen racers started Competition Karting Inc. Yamaha Sportsman Medium, which awarded a set of Hoosier tires to the victory. The early lead pack included Ryan Hatcher, Matt Michel, Chris Larson, Brian Ellis and Zack Clark until a spin in turn one only two laps into the race took out Michel and Clark and cost Larson and Ellis valuable time.

Hatcher was able to avoid the incident and run away for a 27-second dominating win. Larson recovered to pass a number of competitors to make it back to second place. Wild Bill Holder took third, Saturday Sportsman Heavy winner Jermie Bolt fourth and Ellis fifth.

Sunday Race 4Sam Bocchino picked up the win in CIK 125 Shifter Final 2 over Birel racer Steven Rougeou. Donald Santini was third.

Dan Chalk won WKA 125 Shifter Final 2 over Philip Payne.

Chris Hines barely edged teammate Keith Buffo to win TaG Heavy Final 2. Adrian Dale was third and Michael Hines fourth.

Sunday Race 5Clark A Gaynor won the Streeter Super Stands Stock Leopard Sprint Final 2 race and earned a set of VEGA XH tires posted by TS Racing. Gaynor won over Brandon Taylor, who recovered after getting off the grid late. Bernie Adamson was third, Walter Troup fourth and defending Stock Leopard national champion Jeff Wesell fifth in the 14-kart field.

Zack Clark and Michael Holman swapped positions from Saturday’s Yamaha Sportsman Sprint main event. Clark, who finished second to Holman on Saturday, won this one for his second victory of the weekend. Holman had to settle for second, Jeff Leighninger third, AJ Ellis fourth and Andy Leighninger fifth.

Florida’s Jimmy Duguay won Yamaha Sprint Heavy.

Ben Morris bested Charles Wilbur to win Animal Limited Modified 360.

New York’s JT Coupal earned a Grand National victory with his win over Alex Frazer in Team Finork Racing Junior Sprint Heavy. Kyle Cuthbertson was third.

Paul Smith won the Clone 360 race over Desmond Lewis and Darren Greene.

Sunday Race 6The weekend’s final race saw fifteen laydown enduros take the green flag for a 45-minute contest.

Don Chrzan earned win No. 3 on the weekend in Formula 100 Final 2. Chrzan bested Adam Myers to score the hat trick. Mike Fischer was third, Travis Miller fourth and Michael Tracy fifth in the high-attrition race.

Chris Larson won his second race of the weekend and swept the Yamaha pipe laydown classes in the process. Larson won Yamaha Heavy over Brian Ellis. Dan Stowell was third, Don Johnson fourth and William Anderson fifth.

Ohio’s Mallory Davis bested Fran Mazzucotelli to win 100cc Pipe Medium.

The 2013 WKA National Road Racing Series will close its season September 6-8 with the Woodbridge Kart Club-hosted Summit Point Nationals at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia.
