Firestone Road to Daytona Dirt Program

T he WKA Firestone Road to Daytona Dirt Program and Pennsylvania Dirt Karting Series took center stage in

Selinsgrove, Pa., July 29-31 with the Keystone State Double Shot at the historic Selinsgrove Speedway. Saturday featured day one of the double dip and the WKA Dirt Series’ first-ever trip to Pennsylvania for a national event. Sunday closed the weekend with round four of the PDKS divisional series. Saturday’s national saw a number of races earn automatic starting spots for this December’s Dirt World Championships at the Daytona Int’l Speedway Flat Track. Several of those drivers earned multiple feature wins with Brayden Houpt leading all as the only dirt racer to notch a trio of national features. Houpt, who is also a regular on WKA’s Vega Speedway Pavement tour, swept the Sportsman 1 divisions with victories in CKI / Firestone Sportsman 1 Lite, Shadow Racing Chassis Sportsman 1 Heavy and Sportsman 1 Champ. The Pennsylvania racer bested Herschel Johnson for the win in Sportsman 1 Lite before Spencer Yodock claimed the runner-up spot in the Heavy version of the purple-plate category. Houpt wheeled his No. 48 champ-

kart to a convincing win over Austin Roush in Sportsman 1 Champ. Cam Ayres and Douglas Stearly each drove to a pair of wins on the Selinsgrove dirt. Ayres captured wins in Sportsman 2 Lite and Maxxis Tire Sportsman 2 Heavy for his pair of triumphs. The Pennsylvania racer bested reigning WKA national champion Brandon McGough by a 0.237-second margin for the Lite win. Ethan Spotts took third ahead of Zach Bullis and Josh Spicer. Sportsman 2 Heavy saw Ayres open up the gap by 1.4 seconds over Bullis when the checkers waved. The Delaware racer beat out McGough for the second position. Spotts was fourth and New Jersey’s Sam Neary fifth.“A couple of laps into the race I pulled up on the leader to see if I had anything for him,” Ayres said. “I knew I could get him, but didn’t want to use my tires early on in the race. I waited to make my final move with a few laps to go. I would like to thank my dad for giving me an awesome kart to drive. My dad and I dialed in that Rage and Bert had our Bert’s Racing Engine running strong and I knew I had to keep it smooth in order to keep the lead.” Ayres couldn’t garner the hat trick in Sportsman 2 Champ, which saw Trevor

winners at Selinsgrove

Eisenhour earn the national win by a close 0.096-second gap over Jordan Thomas. Eisenhour and Thomas raced out a good ways ahead of third-place Casey Steinhoff. Cy Spencer and Brandon Lepley rounded out the fast five. Second-generation racer Douglas Stearly, whose father Walt was a WKA champion in several different forms of karting, earned his second multi-win WKA event of the 2011 season. Stearly won both Jr flat-kart mains at Daytona back in December to claim over $1,000 in prize money. Stearly returned to WKA dirt wars this past weekend and repeated his Daytona performance with wins in Jr Lite and Jr Heavy. Stearly, a 15-year-old racer out of Trappe, Pa., won easily in both mains. He crossed the stripe over five seconds in front of Owen Dubble and Scott Neary for the win in Jr Lite. Josh Snyder moved into the runner-up spot in Jr Heavy and stayed within striking distance of Stearly, but ended up nearly two seconds back of the winner by the time the checkers waved on lap 20. Snyder fended off challenges from Dubble to take second. Kaitlyn Lutz won her only race of the weekend with a victory over Justin Gates and Nathan Mellot in the 15-lap Jr Champ main. Sam Yonker was the top senior racer at Selinsgrove on Saturday. Yonker bested Paul White for the win in Al’s Kart Supply / AKS Race-Fab Stock Medium. Yonker crossed the stripe a few kart-lengths ahead of White, who held off Tyler Brown for the runner-up position. “It was great to see that checkered flag, knowing I had won on pink Maxxis (tires) when everyone else was on Firestones,” the Shipley Plumbing & Heating-sponsored Yonker said after his win. Brown would win Vega / TSRacing.com

Stock Lite over Al’s Kart Supply racer Amber Reisinger. Darwin Knuth was third. Yonker earned bragging rights and a cool $1,000 check in the day’s final race, the Animal Heavy Money Race. Yonker qualified on the pole for the 20-lapper and raced out to a 0.691-second win over Jonathan Keister. Cody Cressinger took third with Dustin Prettyleaf and White rounding out the top five. Todd Crenshaw and Jeff Shellenberger split the senior champ mains. Crenshaw bested Cressinger for the Ensor Speed Shop Champ Lite victory while Shellenberger won Champ Heavy over Derek Steward. Melissa Ford picked up a popular win in Ultramax Racing Chassis Stock Heavy. Ford won over Cody Sieber and White for the big win. John Hoffman beat out Daytona winner Randy Brundage in RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Masters. “God Bless America!” Hoffman exclaimed after his win. “Keep up the good work, WKA.” Darren Pifer earned a guaranteed Daytona starting spot with a win in Super Heavy over Paul Gage, while Zachary Smith did the same in Dixie Karting Raptor Lite. Smith won over Aaron Browning and Tyler Campbell in the 20-lap flathead main. WKA thanks the efforts of national and local Pennsylvania officials for a smooth weekend of dirt racing at Selinsgrove. A special thanks goes out to PDKS officials for welcoming the WKA Firestone Road to Daytona Dirt Program into their backyard, and all the racers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions who made the trip to central Pa., for the first-ever Keystone State Double Shot.

Russell Karting Gold Cup Series

T he Coyote Motorsports Nationals, the third round of the 2011 WKA Russell Karting Gold Cup Series, went

off August 12-14 at the popular New Castle Motorsports Park in Indiana, where another strong turnout of 4-cycle sprint teams filled the east-central Indiana venue’s pit area. While most junior classes remained stable at double-digit entry counts, larger senior division fields than what we’ve seen at the opening 2011 Gold Cup rounds graced the one-mile New Castle road course. An impressive number of 26 racers hit the track for Stock Medium – the weekend’s largest class – while 23 entrants started the Money Race and solid groups of 15 and 16 karts took the green in the Heavy and Lite versions of the

senior Stock Animal category. One driver who returned to the series after missing round two at Camden, Ohio, due to shoulder surgery was multi-time WKA Triple Crown champion Gary Lawson. Lawson wasn’t just another entry in the strong senior fields, he was the weekend’s only three-time winner with triumphs in Medium, Heavy and Friday night’s Year Around Tax Service Animal Heavy Money Race. Lawson’s dominating weekend was reminiscent of past seasons when the No. 10 Arrow was almost a shoe in for multiple victories at a Gold Cup national, and it may have reminded many series regulars the old adage that “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Lawson returns, wins big at New Castle Gold Cup

Russell Karting Gold Cup Series

Lawson kicked off the weekend with a big win in the 20-lap Year Around Tax Service Animal Heavy Money Race, an affair he’s won several times the last few years. The victory marked his first Money Race triumph of the year and ended Chris Wells’ two-race winning streak in the special Friday night event. Wells finished sixth. Crossing the stripe second was Zachary Deshaies, who continues to flourish in his first full season in the senior ranks. Zachary Linsell returned to the Gold Cup Series after several winning weekends at WKA Road Racing Series nationals and ran a strong third. Dakota Bell, another multi-time Triple Crown winner, made his return to Gold Cup for the first time since 2009. Bell wheeled the Ryan Phillips No. 27 Bandit to fourth to kick off his first Gold Cup weekend in the senior ranks. Coyote driver Dylan Zobkiw rounded out the top five. Zobkiw improved his position three spots in Saturday’s Stock Heavy main. The Rochester, N.Y., native ran a strong second to Lawson in the 10-lap main. Illinois’ Connor

Lund took third, followed by David Calabrese and second-generation Michigan Kart Supply racer Nick Cole, who’s returned to WKA wars this season after relocating back to his native Michigan from California, where he’s lived for the last several years. Sunday’s Stock Medium was the race many were waiting for and Lawson again shined in the 10-lapper. Lawson wheeled his Arrow to the win over fellow Ohio driver Bell, who finished an impressive second in his first-ever Stock Medium feature. Wells entered the race 20 points behind Scott Kleman in Stock Medium class standings. Wells took third in the feature with Kleman fourth, which closes the point gap to a near-tie heading into the season closer at BeaveRun. Ben Wagenhals wheeled his Coyote to a strong fifth-place showing. Wells did pick up the victory in Coyote Motorsports Stock Lite, marking his first win of the season in the class. Wells chauffeured his MGM chassis to the top laurels over Lite point leader Zachary Deshaies. Wisconsin’s Steven Kilsdonk crossed the line in third. Bell took

fourth and Linsell fifth. In other senior class racing, Jason Jons won Super Heavy for the second race in a row. Jons won over class point leader Bob Bates. Georgia’s Dicky Wilson made his return to WKA racing after a number of years away. He finished third. Ian Walther ran fourth.

Joey Miller and Connor Lund split the Sr Box Stock features. Miller captured Saturday’s Final 1 while Lund claimed victory in Final 2. Miller won over New Jersey’s David Calabrese in Final 1 while Lund, Tyler Bell and Carter Schlenke filled the top five. Final 2 saw Lund cross the stripe ahead of Calabrese, Miller and Bell. Miller is now four for six in Sr Box Stock mains in Gold Cup this season. Lund’s win on Sunday marked his first Gold Cup win of the season.

The Box Stock fields have been very respectable in their first season as national classes in Gold Cup, and many thanks to the Clone teams from northern Florida and Georgia that continue to support the series and make long jaunts north to the Midwest. Steve Roberts is now six for six in Masters features this season. The Roberts Kart

Shop / Razor Chassis owner swept the Masters mains for the third weekend this year and now looks to sweep the season with the BeaveRun season closer on the horizon. Roberts won over Coyote drivers Nick Cole and Tim Stiefel in Saturday’s Masters Medium. Stiefel came back to run a strong second in Sunday’s Target Distributing Masters Heavy, finishing ahead of Bob Bates and David Barry. “Baker Racing Engines provides great straight-line speed,” Roberts said after the weekend. “Thanks to Steven Maddox and Ed McGlone for turning wrenches so that I may help other customers.”

10

Russell Karting Gold Cup Series

Coyote owner Jim Lipari equaled Roberts’ weekend success with a sweep of the Animal Modified mains. Lipari captured both Animal Modified Medium and Heavy over David Calabrese. Gabriel Zellner is one of the top Gold Cup winners this year. Zellner earned his fourth and fifth national wins of the season with a sweep of the Sportsman 1 category, the youngest group of racers in Gold Cup. The Wisconsin Arrow racer, who along with his brother Jacob also competes in the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series, captured Performance North Sportsman 1 Lite over Adam Cornell. Zachary Wells, Wyatt Frantz and Jason Alder finished third through fifth. Zellner returned Sunday to win Sportsman 1 Heavy over Wells, Frantz, David Kalb Jr. and Nick Fauci. Maryland’s Trent Barnes and New York’s Jake Lutz split the Sportsman 2 mains. Barnes drove to victory in American Power Sports Sportsman 2 Lite over Tyler Frantz Sarah Luoma had one of her best Gold Cup runs with a fine third-place drive. Jacob Zellner was fourth and Joey Spall fifth. The win was Barnes’ first on the 2011 Gold Cup tour. The Sportsman 2 Heavy weekend capper went to Lutz’s No. 48. The National Bank Equipment / Lutz’s Market-sponsored Coyote driver picked up his second win of the year over Barnes, who was denied of the weekend sweep. J. Zellner was third, Luoma fourth and Spall claimed fifth for the second day in a row. “After leading most of the race and watching Barnes and Frantz draft

by me with two laps to go, all I could hope for was one of them would make a mistake and luckily for me they got together on the last turn, allowing me to get the win,” Lutz explained. “Special thanks to Baker Racing Engines for the great power and track support,” he added. “Mike and Kaytlyn Fauci helped out with our chassis setup. It was great to get our second win of the year for our new sponsor National Bank Equipment. I would also like to thank everyone from Coyote Motorsports for their help.” Georgia Razor drivers Dylan Murry and Connor Tebbe both captured double-win weekend in the Box Stock ranks.

11

Page 12: WKA Karting Scene - 2011 September Issue

Russell Karting Gold Cup Series

Murry won his third and fourth Jr Sportsman 1 Box Stock mains of the year, both coming over Austin Schulz and Emil Schulz. “It was fun but very challenging starting last, passing for the lead and to win the race! I am really happy to have won both Saturday and Sunday’s races!” Murry said after his double win weekend. Tebbe extended his point lead in Jr Sportsman 2 Box Stock with wins over Tyler Woods both days, and the Bodytronics.com-sponsored racer spoke about his win. “The track has a lot of grip and I was driving flat out most of the time. The track had a lot of rubber and we managed to keep our Razor 2.0 free and fast all day.” After Skyler Locklear and Jacob Heavlow were big winners at Jacksonville and

Camden, the super-competitive Animal Junior divisions saw four different winners in four races. Robbie Jones captured Razor Chassis / Roberts Kart Shop Restricted Junior. Jones, who is now three for three in the class this season, wheeled his MGM mount to the victory over Ryan Bavineau. Tyler Capodice had his best run of the 2011 season with a third-place drive. Anthony Wimmer and Dustin Demattia took fourth and fifth. Connor Brown picked up his first triumph of the year with a win over Jones in Barnes Paving Jr Lite, which started an impressive 17 karts. WKA Manufacturer’s Cup regular and 2010 Gold Cup Triple Crown champion Skylar Robinson returned to the series after missing Camden and finished third.

12

Page 13: WKA Karting Scene - 2011 September Issue

Russell Karting Gold Cup Series

Douglas Barnes Jr. ran fourth and Heavlow fifth. “I made the final pass on Robbie (Jones) with two to go to take the win. It felt good to be back toward the front after having mechanical failures in four of the last six races,” Brown said after his win. Heavlow couldn’t match his three-win performance last month at Camden but the Maryland Bandit racer did pick up one victory at New Castle, coming in Thor Oil Jr Medium. Heavlow won the 10-lap main over Robinson. D. Barnes was third, Tyler Orlop fourth and Wimmer fifth. Skylar Robinson’s return to Gold Cup was a good one as the Augusta, Ga., racer wheeled his Razor chassis to the win in Jr Heavy. Robinson, who won all four junior mains at New Castle last season, took his first WKA triumph of 2011 over D. Barnes, who claimed three top fives but couldn’t find Victory Lane. Jones was third, Bavineau fourth and Wimmer rounded out the top five.

“Thanks to Baker Racing Engines for the great horsepower and Razor Chassis for their support,” Robinson said. Jones and Tyler Smith split the Jr Box Stock features. Jones claimed Jr Box Stock Final 1 over Steven Schlenke. Tanner Lee, Tyler Smith and Matthew Horst finished third through fifth. Tyler Smith won over Jones in Sunday’s Jr Box Stock Final 2. Tyler’s brother Aren Smith took third, Schlenke fourth and Horst fifth. With the pair of summer Gold Cup nationals now in the books, one race remains on the 2011 slate. The series will close the schedule with the GT Machine Grand Nationals, coming Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at Wampum, Pa.’s BeaveRun Motorsports Complex. Pre-entries already look strong for the BeaveRun event as WKA anticipates a strong close to a strong season for its only 4-cycle sprint series.

T he Woodbridge Kart Club hosted its first WKA Grand National since 2005 July 29-31 with round four of the

Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by Mazda at VIRginia International Raceway’s North Course. The sweltering hot three-day event attracted road racers from throughout the country to the beautiful, historic Danville, Va.-area venue. Bases of teams in attendance ranged from New England to Florida, nearly every Midwest state and as far west as Oklahoma. An unofficial number of 375 entries made the VIR event another strong one for

WKC and WKA. The weekend truly was a racers’ paradise with the fast, sleek enduro-style karts running the 2.25-mile North Course and the popular Chump Car World Series racing on the 1.65-mile South Course. On Saturday night, after the karting had ended and a familiar southern Virginia thunderstorm rolled through, Chump Car racers took to VIR’s Full Course and raced throughout the night before the tracks were again split for Sunday’s programs. Seven racers wheeled their mounts to a pair of national triumphs while Courtney Atkinson was the only three-race winner.

Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by MazdaDunlop Tire Road Racing Series driven by MazdaBut ahead of everyone was Illinois’ Aaron Snyder, who swept the four TaG sprint divisions to become the weekend’s only four-race feature winner. Snyder picked up his first win in Saturday’s first group. The 23-year-old racer won DRT Racing TaG 1 by a wide margin over New Englanders Keith Buffo and Don Guilbeault. Chris Hines, another New England-based racer, and Logan Wallace were DNFs and credited with fourth and fifth. Snyder added a second victory later in the day in Spec 125 TaG 1 before notching two more wins Sunday afternoon in TaG 2 and Spec 125 TaG 2. Buffo ran second in Spec 125 TaG 1 with Guilbeault third and Sean Conlon fourth. TaG 2 saw Snyder triumph over Guilbeault, Hines and Buffo while Spec 125 TaG 2 showed Snyder ahead of Guilbeault, Conlon and Buffo, who did not finish. Courtney Atkinson had another terrific weekend. The 18-year-old Franklin, Wis., racer captured three wins on the weekend – two in the laydown ranks and one aboard her CKI sprint-enduro kart.

Atkinson bested her longtime competitor Adam Myers for the victory in Safe Harbour Wines Yamaha Sportsman Medium, which was the largest class of the weekend at an impressive 25 starters, which also made it one of the best Road Racing fields of the season. Oklahoma’s Chris Larson crossed the stripe first in the Sportsman Medium main, but had issues in the post-race tech barn and was deemed illegal, this giving the win to Atkinson. As mentioned, Myers was second, ahead of David Goodwin. WKC veteran “Wild” Bill Holder, whose Safe Harbour Wines business sponsors the class, finished a strong fourth with another WKC veteran Tim Linthicum fifth. Sunday saw Atkinson dominate PP Can Medium and PP Can Sprint #2. She won PP Can Medium by a comfortable margin over Don Harrod. Kyle Swiatlowski and Jimmy Driggers ran third and fourth. In PP Can Sprint #2, Atkinson was at least half the track ahead of an exciting four-kart battle for the runner-up spot. Chris Hines fended off his father Mike Hines to earn the

17

second position. Derek Somers and John Maesky were in the mix all race but both spun on the final lap. Both drivers recovered to cross the stripe fourth and fifth in the six-kart field. Other PP Can winners were Brent Goodwin in Office Mart Inc. PP Can Lite. Goodwin won over Swiatlowski, who recorded two top-three finishes on the weekend, and Nick Lemons in third. Don Harrod claimed the Competition Karting Inc. PP Can Heavy victory. Driggers was the only other entrant in the division. In the sprint version of the PP Can category, Derek Somers earned his first Grand National victory in the senior ranks with a win over Chris Hines in Saturday’s Heiser Trailer Leasing PP Can Sprint #1. Similar to Yamaha Sportsman Medium, which saw Atkinson inherit the win after Larson was DQ’ed, the Saturday version of PP Can Sprint saw Somers awarded the victory after Atkinson was disqualified in post-race tech. New Jersey racer John Maesky took third behind Hines. As mentioned, the weekend featured teams from Oklahoma and three of those Sooner State racers left Virginia International

with a pair of coveted Grand National Eagle trophies. Chris Larson wheeled his red CKI laydown to wins in Southern Kart Club 100cc Yamaha Heavy and TSRacing.com Yamaha Sportsman Heavy. Larson’s triumph in Sportsman Heavy came in the weekend’s final race group after a brief shower slowed the action Sunday afternoon. The track dried quickly and one of the most excited races of the weekend ensued. “Wild” Bill Holder led much of the 45-minute main while fending off challenges from David Lee. Holder looked to have the race in hand before Larson, who got a terrible start and fell way behind the lead duo, reeled in the leaders and passed both Lee and Holder with less than five minutes to go. Larson pulled out from there and crossed the stripe 1.6 seconds ahead of Holder, who earned his best run of the season but barely missed out on an Eagle trophy. Lee was third ahead of David Goodwin and Virginian Ernie O’Bier. Accomplished Road Racing veteran Anthony Honeywell traveled to VIR from his

18

Page 19: WKA Karting Scene - 2011 September Issue

Tulsa, Okla., base and swept the Formula 100 mains in fairly dominating fashion. Honeywell won comfortably over Don Chrzan in Formula 100 #1. Mike Hickey took the last step on the podium in third. North Carolina’s Paul Wyzga was fourth and Travis Miller fifth. On Sunday, Lance Fry hung tough with Honeywell before dropping out around the midpoint of Formula 100 #2. Honeywell cruised from there for another dominating win over Wisconsin racers Chrzan, Milo Schoonover, Miller and Ian E. Morgan completing the top five. Ryan Hatcher, another Tulsa, Okla., driver, matched Larson’s success with two wins of his own. Hatcher bested Alabama’s Michael McCombs and Virginia’s Keith O’Bier to win 100cc Pipe Heavy. Hatcher also captured the

Dart Kart Club 100cc Yamaha Medium feature over Mallory Davis and Fran Mazzucotelli. While Mallory Davis settled for the runner-up position to Hatcher on Saturday, she experienced a memorable Sunday that saw her claim her first-ever Grand National victory in Dart Kart Club 100cc Pipe Medium. Mallory won over Adam Myers in the 45-minute enduro and after thanked her father Gene Davis for “all the hard work he put into my kart and for pushing me to my first Grand National win.” Zachary Linsell offered up another pair of wins at VIR – his third double-win weekend of the 2011 Road Racing season. Linsell wheeled his MGM chassis to his third wins of the season in both Animal Sprint 335 and Animal Sprint 360, which boasted a

19

Page 20: WKA Karting Scene - 2011 September Issue

strong 14-kart field. Linsell won both mains over fellow Maryland racer Leon Hodges-Austin, a regular WKC racer. Animal 360 saw Jonathan Tedder take third, Toni Alexander fourth and Joey Kuley round out the top five. Tedder also came close to a win in Animal Sprint 385 but had to settle for second to another MGM racer, Kevin Colborn, who scored the win by a four-second gap over Tedder. Alexander was third in the 13-kart field, followed by Frank Kelleher and Adam Ross. Randy Delp ended Dominic Greco’s dominance in Animal Sprint 410. Delp won by a large gap over Greco, who had won the season’s first three Animal 410 mains. Jerry Beasom came home third with Rich Dreher and Wayne Hisaw rounding out the five-kart field. In other 4-cycle action, Road Racing newcomer Harrison Walker and national regular Brent Hadden split the Animal Jr Sprint mains. Walker won Heavy and Hadden was victorious in Lite. Dennis Smith and Joe Kuley split the Animal Limited Mod races. Smith won over Kuley in 360. Charles Wilbur and Ben Morris filled the field. Roles were reversed in 385 with Kuley, a multi-time winner in the new Animal Mod Road Racing category this season, crossed the line ahead of Smith. Wilbur, Alexander and Morris finished third through fifth. The 2-cycle junior categories each saw one driver sweep the weekend. Massachusetts’ Michael Holman won Jr Sprint Lite and Team Finork Racing Jr Sprint Heavy over Eli Brown, while Nick Goodwin bested J.C. Sanders for wins in Jr Enduro Lite and Jr Enduro Heavy.

Wisconsin’s Mike Lattos won Formula 125 and Unlimited Final 1 for another double-win weekend. Tennessee’s Kelly Lawrence, who finished second to Lattos in Saturday’s F-125 main, won over the Badger State driver in Sunday’s Unlimited Final 2. The competitive 100cc Controlled Spec runs saw multi-time Jacksonville, Illinois, Road Racing champion Randy Fulks beat out a trio of Frys in Sleeper Racing Team 100cc Cont. Spec 1 and veteran Sean O’Shea earn his first national win of the season in 100cc Cont. Spec 2. Fulks claimed his second win of the season by half-second margin over Lance Fry in Saturday’s Spec 1 main. Jim Fry crossed the line about 13 seconds back of the winner while Brandon Fry passed O’Shea late in the race to take fourth. O’Shea returned Sunday to race his Coyote to the Controlled Spec 2 triumph over Lance Fry. O’Shea led early, as he has many

20

times this year, before slipping back to third. The Massachusetts racer retook the lead when Lance and Brandon Fry made contact and spun while battling for the lead. O’Shea hit his marks and laid down fast laps in the 1:42-bracket over the last half of the race to cruise to a 3.6-second win over Lance, who couldn’t recover from the early-race incident with his brother to claim a Grand National Eagle. Michael Radowski had one of his best runs of the season with a third-place effort. John Ellsworth took fourth and Ed Dolbow rounded out the top five. Travis Miller earned his first win of the season in 100cc Controlled. The Virginia Beach veteran won over Chrzan, who posted three second-place finishes on the weekend. Schoonover was third. Tiffany McCollum scored a popular victory in Saturday’s final race group, which featured the ultra-competitive Stock Honda 1 division.

In a spirited five-kart battle for the win, McCollum edged WKC regular Clark Gaynor Jr. by a mere 0.007-second margin. Byron Rothenhoefer, Brian Fisher and Jon Evans were a close third through fifth in the strong 20-kart field. Sunday’s Stock Honda 2 feature marked the only rain-shortened race of the weekend. Rain began to fall hard enough to wet the track and wave the red flag after 19 minutes of the scheduled 30-minute main. Former national champion Brian Fisher and his sleek DR chassis held the lead when the red flew and was awarded the victory. Fisher, Rothenhoefer and McCollum had separated themselves from the rest of the field and took the top-three positions. Gaynor was fourth and Greg Heberle fifth.

2010 WKA Triple Crown winner Adam Myers won the WKA Sprint 1 main over New Englander Jim Sorrentino. Florida’s Dave Willaims ran third with Guy Brown and Nick Tinkham fourth and fifth. Dave Williams returned Sunday to claim the WKA Sprint 2 victory after Myers was bounced in post-race tech. Williams, the Southern Kart Club president and a key figure in national and regional Road Racing, bested Massachusetts’ Eric Stockford for the win. Tinkham was third, Brown fourth and Ted Carbonaro fifth. Teammates Rodney Smith, our current WKC president, and Scott Clark split the Yamaha Sprint races. Smith won Yamaha Sprint Heavy while Clark was the winner of Yamaha Sprint Lite. Both drivers hail from West Virginia. Scott Goodman won B Stock over Robby Harper. C. Brad Price, Robby Harper III and Tom O’Reilly filled the top five.

21

Byron Rothenhoefer and Steven Rougeo split the CIK 125 Shifter mains. Rothenhoefer won Saturday’s CIK 125 Shifter 1 over Ross Kasner and Richard White while Rougeo took Sunday’s weekend capper, also capturing the victory over Kasner with Ryan Petty in third. J.P. Krukowicz and defending national champion Stephen Flatt split the WKA 125 Shifter mains. Chuck Weaver finished second in both WKA 125 Shifter races. Rebecca Taylor (Final 1) and Doug Dodge (Final 2) were victorious in the Stock Leopard races. Local-option winners were Ron Hodges, Bailey Colborn, Ben Thomason, Derek Billingsley, Bob Young, Duane Eberhart, Kristina Griffith, Arthur McKenny, Dick Charest, Ian E Morgan, Ben Morris, John Larson, Chris Kuley, Seth Williams and

Emilien Krukowicz. On an extremely hot weekend at VIR that saw dangerous temperatures reaching over 100 degrees, a handful of racers and team members suffered from heat exhaustion. A few people were transported to a local hospital but everyone suffering from heat-related problems returned home and were OK. An accident on the first lap of Saturday’s first race group sent 4-cycle Animal racer Steve Jeffers to the hospital. Jeffers suffered a broken collarbone and broken ribs in the turn 10 incident. Jeffers returned to his Georgia home a few days after the VIR Grand National and WKC and WKA officials wish Jeffers and fast recovery and hope to see him back at the track soon.
