The mission of Mary

Greeley Medical Center

Foundation is to assist

Mary Greeley Medical

Center in promoting

health and providing

compassionate,

high-quality care. The

Foundation accomplishes

this mission by

encouraging charitable

giving from individuals

and organizations.

Mary Greeley Medical Center donors ensure that services and programs

that improve care and expand skills are always within reach. Last year,

donors made 3,718 gifts, totaling more than $1.3 million, to the Mary

Greeley Medical Center Foundation.

This level of donor support helps us fulfill our mission to advance the

health of central Iowans through specialized care and personal touch.

Here are just a few ways that our communities, patients and their

families were helped by the generosity of our friends in the past year:

• Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center. This year, we celebrated the successful

conclusion of the three-year Campaign to Reach, Teach and Treat, which raised nearly

$2 million for the center. Enhanced diabetes care and education services are now

within reach for thousands of people.

• Israel Family Hospice House. Since its doors opened in 1999, the Israel Family

Hospice House has become a vital part of the communities we serve, enabling patients

to spend their last days with dignity, surrounded by their loved ones. Donor support

ensures that compassionate end-of-life care is within reach to all patients. To truly

understand the importance of this, consider that in 2008-09 the hospice house served

174 patients and their families.

• Certification. Last year, 11 new nurses earned certification in their areas of expertise,

which means MGMC now has 100 Certified Nurses providing quality care to patients.

Once again, donors made this achievement within reach because the MGMC

Foundation helps fund the certification education.

• Cancer Resource Center. More than 2,000 people visited the center last year seeking

reliable, objective cancer information. Solely supported by private donations, the center

provided a variety of services, including 200 new patient consultations, 130 genetic risk

consultations, 60 breast prostheses and 50 survivorship meetings.

Each donor included in this annual report should be proud of what they have done to

improve the health of the communities served by Mary Greeley Medical Center. Let us take

this opportunity to say “thank you” to all of our donors. Your support helps ensure that Mary

Greeley is a dynamic health care facility. You make it possible. You make it all within reach.

AnImmediateImpactHow the Diabetes and Nutrition Education Centerhelped one Ames woman change her life.

Jane Dusselier felt desperate and overwhelmed.

Just two weeks after

being diagnosed with

type 2 diabetes, the

Iowa State University

anthropology professor

found herself in Mary

Greeley Medical

Center suffering from

ketoacidosis, a serious

complication due to

diabetes.

“I didn’t have any

knowledge of what it

meant to have

diabetes,” says Dusselier. “After I left the hospital, I was

going to have to give myself five shots of insulin a day, and

do things like count carbs. I had to figure out how I was

going to handle all this.”

Then June Heiden entered her life, and Dusselier

experienced firsthand how donor support enhances the care

Mary Greeley Medical Center is able to provide patients.

“June’s incredible,” says Dusselier. “She had me completely

educated by the time I left the hospital. She’s been totally

involved with my after care, and I contact her whenever I

have a question about managing my diabetes.”

Dan and Sharon Krieger’s decision

to support the Mary Greeley

Medical Center Diabetes and

Nutrition Education Center

through their estate came down to

one big word: need.

The Kriegers have a long history

with Ames and Mary Greeley

Medical Center. Dan retired in

December 2009 after more than 50 years with Ames

National Corporation and First National Bank. He

also is a longtime MGMC Foundation Board member

ANeedRealizedDiabetes awareness inspires Ames couple’s gift.

WeDidIt!Successful Campaign to Reach,

Teach and Treat advances diabetes

care and education.

Mary Greeley Medical Center’s mission resonated

throughout the Campaign to Reach,Teach and Treat.

The three-year campaign, which came to a successful

conclusion in 2009, raised $1.9 million—exceeding its

original goal of $1.5 million—to fund a new facility

and an endowment to provide ongoing support for the

MGMC Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center.

The center is helping thousands of people manage

their diabetes and lower risk for complications. It’s

increasing awareness about diabetes and other

nutritional concerns through support groups, a

resource library and educational programs. The center

also has partnered with Blank Children’s Hospital to

provide a monthly pediatric clinic.

The outstanding support the campaign generated

came from many generous people motivated by a

commitment to saving and changing lives through

improved diabetes care and education.

A Trio With A MissionRetired Ames businessman Bill Burke, a longtimesupporter of the medical center who was diagnosed withdiabetes nearly 30 years ago, pledged $300,000 to theDiabetes and Nutrition Education Center through theCampaign to Reach, Teach and Treat. His gift creatednew positions that Heiden and Lively have held sinceJune 2009. Heiden, R.N., C.D.E., is a full-time diabetesclinical resource nurse. Lively, R.N., is a part-timediabetes and nutrition liaison.

Seeing Heiden and Lively get on board so quickly wasgratifying for Burke, who is a committed advocate fordiabetes awareness and education.

“When you’re in business management nothing movesas fast as you want, but they have done a remarkablejob in getting things underway,” he says.

Heiden, who lost her mother to diabetes, has been aCertified Diabetes Educator for 11 years. She worked atMcFarland Clinic and MGMC for several years beforebecoming a representative for an insulin pumpcompany. “I have had the opportunity to visit facilitiesin other states and this is one of the best I have seen,”says Heiden. “We are fortunate to have the Diabetesand Nutrition Education Center here, and I’m sohappy to be back at Mary Greeley to be a part of thisoutstanding center.”

A Changed LifeDusselier is full of praise for the help and advice shereceived from Dr. Richard Carano, Dr. RyanGrandgenett and the nursing staff. But she’s built aspecial relationship with Heiden.

With Heiden’s help, Dusselier is learning how to livewith diabetes, from changing her eating habits tomanaging her medications. She’s now a pro at countingcarbs, which affect blood sugar.

Dusselier also got a lot of encouragement aboutexercise. Though she’s always been an avid swimmer, she’s also using a newly purchased stationary bike for30 minutes, 7 days a week.

Meanwhile, the Diabetes and Nutrition EducationCenter has become a major resource for Dusselier. Sheuses the center’s library, attends support groups andstops by to have her glucose levels checked before eachdoctor’s appointment. And, when anyone else with

5

and recently finished a year as board president. Sharon, who

was born and raised in Ames, was a registered nurse for more

than 30 years with McFarland Clinic.

Thanks to their involvement with the hospital, the Kriegers

were deeply aware of the need and potential impact of a

diabetes and nutrition center in the community. As a nurse,

for example, Sharon often assisted retired ophthalmologist

Wendell Johnson in surgery and saw the impact of diabetes

on eyesight.

During discussions about their gift to the Campaign

to Reach, Teach and Treat, Sharon’s stepfather was dealing

with the effects of a stroke, heart troubles and

adult-onset diabetes.

“My stepfather’s illness played a role in our decision because

we saw the impact it had on our whole family,” she says. “It

showed how diabetes does not just affect one person—it

has many little fingers that go out in all directions.”

The Kriegers’ devotion to their three grandchildren also has

made them sensitive to issues of children’s health. Sharon

keeps up with medical news in magazines and newspapers.

She knows the rising incidents of diabetes and pre-diabetes,

and the related concerns about obesity in children.

diabetes asks Dusselier for advice, she directs them tothe center.

“Having the resource in the hospital gives you hope,”she says. “As a newly diagnosed diabetes patient, it’sgreat to know they are there for you. Anything theyoffer, I take advantage of.”

Focus On CareHeiden works withpatients with diabeteswho have been admittedto the hospital. Oftenthese patients have beenhospitalized because ofillnesses other thandiabetes or complicationsdue to their disease. She

also works with physicians and other medical staff tohelp develop better standards of care for patients.

“We are developing insulin protocols to ensure we havethe best processes in place to help patients managetheir diabetes while in the hospital,” says Heiden.

Shortened hospital stays will be one benefit of theseprotocols. Another is that patients will hopefully returnhome with information and training they need tobetter manage their diabetes, possibly reducing the riskof a future hospital stay.

Lively, whose mother has diabetes, has worked at MaryGreeley Medical Center since 2007. As diabetes andnutrition liaison, Lively will put her degrees in nursingand exercise science to use.

“Part of my job is increasing diabetes awareness inschools, and educating parents and kids about thebenefits of fitness and exercise in preventing obesityand diabetes,” says Lively.

She’s also meeting regularly with physicians to makethem aware of services available for their patients whohave diabetes.

Heiden and Lively are expanding Mary GreeleyMedical Center’s diabetes support services throughoutthe hospital and the community. It wouldn’t havehappened without Burke.

“We definitely appreciate what he’s done,” saysHeiden. “His generosity is helping us to make a hugedifference in the lives of many.”

6

“The Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center is a

wonderful educational resource that will help people with

diabetes, their families and so many others learn about

nutrition,” says Sharon. “It will be part of the effort to

slow the spread of the disease and keep it from impacting

future generations.”

The Kriegers have joined the many other couples and

individuals in the Greeley Society by making this gift

through their estate. “We wanted to make sure our support

made an impact for generations to come and a gift through

our estate made that possible,” says Dan. “Joining the

Greeley Society allows us to share our commitment

to the community and show our proud support of the

medical center.”

FutureImpact Greeley Society honors deferred giving.

Members of the Greeley Society have made

the deepest commitment to Mary Greeley

Medical Center by making a deferred gift.

To understand why the Mary Greeley Medical CenterAuxiliary raises funds for projects like the Diabetesand Nutrition Education Center, consider the story ofEmily Bailey.

The Ogden girl was just four years old when she wasdiagnosed with diabetes and later put on an insulinpump. She’s 15 now, still on the insulin pump and“despite the ups and downs of being a teenager, doingvery well,” says Emily’s mom, Ann.

One reason Ann Bailey can say that is Mary Greeley’sdiabetes services, which have been helping Emilyunderstand and manage her diabetes since that originaldiagnosis. Diabetes is simply part of her life. So is theDiabetes and Nutrition Education Center.

Recognizing the growing need for diabetes andnutrition services in our communities, the Auxiliarypledged $100,000 for the Diabetes and NutritionEducation Center through the Campaign to Reach,Teach and Treat.

“Through this support, we’re impacting the level ofcare and quality of education services that MaryGreeley is able to offer,” says Karen Hallberg, Auxiliarypresident.

“Having the diabetes center in Ames is so beneficialbecause we don’t have to go all the way to DesMoines,” says Ann. “The people there are just great andalways ready to help no matter what time it is.”

The Baileys know that firsthand, having had to call foradvice late at night when Emily was younger and ill,

and her family feared she displayed symptoms ofketoacidosis, a serious condition related tocomplications from diabetes. The Baileys also got a lotof nutrition tips early on from the medical center andattended diabetes support groups.

Emily’s an athletic young woman and a member ofOgden High School’s track and volleyball teams. Acouple of years ago she attended a program aboutsports and diabetes offered by the center. One of thespeakers was former Iowa State University Cyclonefootball player Nick Moser. He talked about managinghis diabetes and athletics, and how supportive coachesand other players had been.

“It was hard to imagine someone with diabetes beingable to get out there, so listening to Nick was a hugeconfidence boost,” says Emily. “It gave me theconfidence to get out there and not feel like I was sodifferent from everyone else.”

That kind of impact wouldn’t be possible without thesupport of donors like the Auxiliary.

“What truly motivates us,” says Karen, “is the desire tohelp our friends and family, to ensure their localhospital is able to provide the best possible care forthem and everyone else in the community.”

While businesses can contribute to Mary GreeleyMedical Center in a variety of ways, such as to aparticular campaign like Reach, Teach and Treat, themost common is through the Foundation’s AnnualSponsorship Program.

The 2009 Sponsorship Program was supported by 33businesses and individuals, providing a record $109,500in contributions. This level of participation is aninspiring demonstration of how the businesscommunity values the specialized care and personaltouch of Mary Greeley Medical Center.

John Langeland, MGMC Foundation president, hasbeen involved with the sponsorship committee formany years. He not only recruits business sponsors, buthis own business, Gateway Insurance Services, is aPacemaker Sponsor as well.

“The success of the program is based on going out tobusinesses and telling them our story— telling themwhat’s going on at the hospital and what the needs are,”he says. “We’ve always found local business people to bereceptive to our ideas, and very generous.”

Important PartnersPhysicians with McFarland Clinic, a PresentingSponsor, have pledged support to several MGMCFoundation initiatives over the years including theIsrael Family Hospice House, Cancer ResourceCenter and most recently the Diabetes and NutritionEducation Center.

“Our physicians are very supportive and appreciative ofthese health-driven initiatives which provide tremendousresources for central Iowa residents,” says Steve Koger,McFarland Clinic chief executive officer. “The MaryGreeley Medical Center Foundation has taken aproactive approach to addressing health care needs inour community. We are pleased to partner with thefoundation to provide resources for those in need.”

“Our affiliate banks in other communities supportwith their donations, as well, because having a hospitalof this caliber is important to their employees andtheir communities,” adds Pohlman.

Giving SpiritBusiness support doesn’t always come in the form of acheck. Ames Hy-Vee stores, for example, are aPacemaker Sponsor and have also provided bottledwater for participants in the annual Hope Run forHospice and gift certificates for the holiday meal forfamilies at Israel Family Hospice House.

“We’re part of the community and they are a big part, too,” says Tom Gard, director of the West Ames Hy-Vee.“As a company we have a big focus on health andwellness, and we see supporting Mary Greeley as the right thing to do.”

The medical center’s business partners receive variousrecognition opportunities at annual hospital events, such as the Hope Run for Hospice. But Langeland andbusiness representatives say good public relations isn’tthe motivation behind giving.

“It’s all driven by a sense of community spirit,” saysLangeland. “They are donating in the interest of makingour community a healthier and better place to live.”

In the months after she was diagnosed with terminal

cancer, Rita Bielefeldt celebrated her daughter’s

wedding, her grandson’s high school graduation and

her granddaughter’s first vows as a Catholic nun.

When she died at Israel Family Hospice House in

July 2008, Bielefeldt’s family and friends celebrated

her life by contributing $3,500 in memorial gifts to

services provided by HOMEWARD Hospice and the

William R. Bliss Cancer Center.

“We were overwhelmed by the generosity,” says

Bielefeldt’s daughter Dee Drummer. “My mother

came from a very large family, but we hadn’t lost

anyone until her. We didn’t really know what to do or

where to turn. Hospice services were a blessing to us.”

Many of the gifts made to Mary Greeley Medical

Center Foundation are given in memory of a loved

one who has received services from the medical

center. These loving tributes provide lasting benefits

to the communities served by MGMC.

LovingMemoryTributes have an impact.
