Good Evening Friends

Welcome back to our revamped Christmas Concert in the Scout and Guide Hall.

Last year the concert was a great success so it was decided to continue with the sameformat and invite the Coalburn Silver Band to join us again.

The concert has a mixture of Christmas music and non Christmas music which mainlyfeatures Aaron Copland's Old American songs. We performed the first set of songs at oursummer concert last year, and this time we tackle the second. They’re spread throughour programme tonight. The songs are short and quirky, and we hope you will enjoythem. Also looking back to this summer’s concert, we’re including one of GeorgeShearing’s Shakespeare settings, “Who Is Silvia”.

The rest of the music includes various Christmas carol settings, and we invite you to joinin for the four best-known. We’ve also got O Holy Night, and extend a warm welcometo our guest tenor soloist, Michael Yeoman.

Each year the choir donates takings from the sale of the concert programmes to a charityand this year the chosen charity is the British Heart Foundation, in memory of ourfounding MD David Knox. It is now 25 years since we lost our talented and enthusiasticconductor, a man who would only accept perfection, so thank you for buying theprogramme tonight.

Now to another gentleman who also expects perfection, our current Musical DirectorChristopher Barr. Chris is a very talented and hard working young man who puts usthrough our paces each Monday with encouraging words and expertise. He has beenaway globe-trotting this autumn - a slight busman’s holiday in Los Angeles and NewYork. See his biography in the programme to find out why! Our thanks go to Chris forall his hard work.

The rehearsals on a Monday evening also require an accompanist and our thanks go toRazvan Luculescu who performs this role each week, and is our skilled accompanisttonight.

The charity ENABLE are helping us out tonight with front of house duties andrefreshments. Please therefore donate if you can via their fund raising buckets. A bigthank you to them for this help.

I hope the Silver Band will enjoy meeting up with us again and our thanks are extendedto them.

My thanks go to the hard working committee, and to all our members attending eachweek.

We also all thank the local firms and businesses for their continued support in sponsoringour programme.

I hope you enjoy the concert, and please join us for a mince pie at the end.

(Lullaby)

Hush you bye, don’t you cry,Go to sleepy little baby,

When you wake, you shall haveAll the pretty little horses.

Blacks and bays, dapples and grays,Coach and six-a little horses.

A brown and a bay and a black and a bayAnd a coach and six-a little horses.

Hush you bye, don’t you cry,Oh, you pretty little baby.

At our Summer Concert two years ago, we sang the first five Old American Songs. Wereckon it’s time to perform the second set of five songs, which we have spread throughtonight’s programme, finishing with Ching-a Ring Chaw - a real tongue-twister.The ballad of The Golden Willow Tree is but one version of many, all telling basically thesame story, dating as far back as the time of Sir Francis Drake. They all feature the ship’syoung crewmember swimming off to sink the enemy ship on the strength of what turnsout to be a false promise from the captain. Not all of them finish as sadly as this one!

(Revivalist Song)

Come fathers and mothers, come sisters and brothers,Come join us in singing the praises of Zion.

O fathers don’t you feel determined to meet within the walls of Zion,We’ll shout and go round, we’ll shout and go round the walls of Zion.

Shepherds, in the fields abiding,Tell us when the Seraph brightGreeted you with wondrous tiding,What ye saw and heard that night.

We beheld (it is no fable)God incarnate, King of bliss,Swathed and cradled in a stableAnd the angel-strain was this.

Quiristers on high were singingJesus and his virgin-birth;Heav’nly bells the while a-ringing‘Peace, goodwill to men on earth.’

Thanks, good herdsmen; true your story;Have with you to Bethlehem:Angels hymn the King of Glory;Carol we with you and them.

In all towns and villages both far and near,Angel host bears tidings in strain full clear:Joy comes to ev’ry nation,Joy to this generation,Christ is here, Christ is here.

Listen to the story of his wondrous birth; How he came so long ago to us on earth;Born of a virgin motherBlessed above all other,Born today, born today.

In a manger lying in poverty;Peace he brings at Christmas-tide to you andme;Tell of his birth that saved us,Tell of the love he gave us,Christ our Lord, Christ our Lord.

Sing then and be joyful on this Christmasnight;Follow with the wise men the star so bright;Lead you to his own glory,Tell out the wondrous story:Christ is born, Christ is born today.

(Anglo-American Ballad)

There was a little ship in South Amerikee,Crying O the land that lies so low,

There was a little ship, she went by the name of The Golden Willow Tree,As she sailed in the lowland lonesome low,

As she sailed in the land so low.

We hadn’t been a-sail-in’ more than two weeks or three,Till we came in sight of the British Roverie,As she sailed in the lowland lonesome low,

As she sailed in the land so low.

Up stepped a little carpenter boy, says“What will you give me for the ship that I’ll destroy?”

“I’ll give you gold or I’ll give theeThe fairest of my daughters as she sails upon the sea,

If you’ll sink ‘em in the lowland lonesome low,If you’ll sink ‘em in the land that lies so low.”

He turned upon his back and away swam he,He swam till he came to the British Roverie,He had a little instrument fitted for his use,

He bored nine holes and he bored them all at once.He turned upon his breast and back swum he,

He swum till he came to the Golden Willow Tree.“Captain, Captain, come take me on board

And do unto me as good as your word. For I sank ‘em in the lowland lonesome low,For I sank ‘em in the land that lies so low.”

“Oh, no, I won’t take you on board,Nor do unto you as good as my word,

Tho’ you sank ‘em in the lowland lonesome low,Tho’ you sank ‘em in the land that lies so low.”

“If it wasn’t for the love that I have for your men,I’d do unto you as I’ve done unto them,

I’d sink you in the lowland lonesome low,I’d sink you in the land that lies so low.”

He turned upon his back and down swum he,He swum till he came to the bottom of the sea,

Sank himself in the lowland lonesome low,Sank himself in the land that lies so low.

O little town of Bethlehem,How still we see thee lie!Above thy deep and dreamless sleepThe silent stars go by.Yet in thy dark streets shinethThe everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the yearsAre met in thee tonight.

O morning stars, togetherProclaim the holy birth,And praises sing to God the King,And peace to men on earth; For Christ is born of Mary; And, gathered all above,While mortals sleep, the angels keepTheir watch of wond’ring love.

How silently, how silently,The wondrous gift is giv’n!So God imparts to human heartsThe blessings of his heav’n.No ear may hear his coming; But in this world of sin,Where meek souls will receive him, stillThe dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,Descend to us ,we pray:Cast out our sin, and enter in,Be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angelsThe great glad tidings tell:O come to us, abide with us,Our Lord Emmanuel.

O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth;Long lay the world in sin and error pining,Till He appeared, and the soul felt its worth.A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!Fall on your knees!Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine!O night, when Christ was born!O night divine!

Led by the light of faith serenely beaming,With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand; So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,Here came the wise men from the Orientland. The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger,In all our trials born to be our friend; He knows our need, He guardeth us fromdanger;Behold your King! Before the the Lowlybend!

It came upon the midnight clear,That glorious song of old,From angels bending near the earthTo touch their harps of gold:‘Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,From heav’n’s all-gracious King!’The world in solemn stillness layTo hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come,With peaceful wings unfurled; And still their heav’nly music floatsO’er all the weary world;Above its sad and lowly plainsThey bend on hov’ring wing; And ever o’er its Babel soundsThe blessed angels sing.

For lo! The days are hastening on,By prophet bards foretold,When, with the ever-circling years,Comes round the age of gold:When peace shall over all the earthIts ancient spendours fling,And the whole world give back the songWhich now the angels sing.

I saw three ships come sailing in, comesailing in, come sailing in,I saw three ships come sailing inOn Christmas Day in the morning.

Pray, whither sailed those ships all three, those ships all three, those ships all three?Pray whither sailed those ships all three,On Christmas Day in the morning?

O, they sailed in to Bethlehem, toBethlehem, to Bethlehem,O, they sailed in to Bethlehem,On Christmas Day in the morning.

And who should be in those three ships, inthose three ships, in those three ships,And who should be in those three ships,But Joseph and his Lady?

And he did whistle and he did sing, and hedid sing, and he did sing,And he did whistle and he did sing,On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the bells on earth shall ring, on earthshall ring, on earth shall ring,And all the bells on earth shall ring,On Christmas Day in the morning.

Then let us all rejoice amain, rejoice amain, rejoice amain,

Then let us all rejoice amain,On Christmas Day in the morning.

From Two Gentlemen of Verona Act IV, Scene II

Who is Silvia? what is she, That all our swains commend her?Holy, fair and wise is she; The heaven such grace did lend her,That she might admired be. Is she kind as she is fair? For beauty lives with kindness. Love doth to her eyes repair,To help him of his blindness, And, being help'd, inhabits there. Then to Silvia let us sing, That Silvia is excelling; She excels each mortal thing Upon the dull earth dwelling:To her let us garlands bring.

Arranged by Goff Richards, English words by David Dearlove.

Here’s our jolly piece of Bavarian-style oom-pah-pah with the band. We enjoyedit so much last year, we’re doing it again!

I am always thinking ofWhen for us good luck began,Not in summer, not in May,Nor a misty autumn day;It was one chill winter’s night,When the world had turned to white,But in the hall we were dancing,And I spoke to you of love. The snow, snow, snowWaltz I adore to do.But still more I love you.The snow, snow, snowWaltzing arm in armKeeps you and keeps meSo snugly winter warm.

(Hymn Tune)

Shall we gather by the river,Where bright angel’s feet have trod,

With its crystal tide for everFlowing by the throne of God.

Yes we’ll gather by the river,The beautiful, the beautiful river,Gather with the saints by the riverThat flows by the throne of God.

Soon we’ll reach the shining river,Soon our pilgrimage will cease,

Soon our happy hearts will quiverWith the melody of peace.

Deck the hall with boughs of holly,

‘Tis the season to be jolly,

Fill the mead cup, drain the barrel,

Troll the ancient Christmas carol,

See the flowing bowl before us,

Strike the harp and join the chorus,

Follow me in merry measure,

While I sing of beauty’s treasure,

Fast away the old year passes,

Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,

Laughing, quaffing all together,

Heedless of the wind and weather,

In the bleak midwinterFrosty wind made moan,Earth stood hard as iron,Water like a stone;Snow had fallen, snow on snow,Snow on snow,In the bleak midwinter,Long ago.

Our God, heav’n cannot hold himNor earth sustain;Heav’n and earth shall flee awayWhen he comes to reign:In the bleak midwinter,A stable-place sufficedThe Lord God AlmightyJesus Christ.

Enough for him, whom cherubimWorship night and day,A breastful of milk,And a mangerful of hay;

Enough for him, whom angelsFall down before,The ox and ass and camelWhich adore.

Angels and archangelsMay have gathered there,Cherubim and seraphimThronged the air:But only his motherIn her maiden blissWorshipped the BelovedWith a kiss.

What can I give him,Poor as I am?If I were a shepherdI would bring a lamb;If I were a wise manI would do my part;Yet what I can I give him -Give my heart.

(Minstrel Song)

Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching,Ho-a ding-a ding kum larkee,Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching,

Ho-a ding kum larkee.Brothers gather round, listen to this story,

‘Bout the promised land, an’ the promised glory. You don’t need to fear if you have no money,

You don’t need none there, to buy you milk and honey. There you’ll ride in style, coach with four white horses,

There the evenin’ meal has one, two, three, four courses.Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching…

Nights we all will dance to the harp and fiddle,Waltz and jig and prance, “Cast off down the middle.”

When the mornin’ come, all in grand and splendor,Stand out in the sun, and hear the holy thunder.

Brothers hear me out, the promised land’s a-comin’,Dance and sing and shout, I hear them harps a strummin’.

Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching……….ching ching ching Chaw!

Hark! the herald angels sing,'Glory to the newborn King!Peace on earth, and mercy mild,God and sinners reconciled.'Joyful, all ye nations, rise,Join the triumph of the skies; With th' angelic host proclaim,'Christ is born in Bethlehem.'Refrain:

Christ, by highest heav'n adored:Christ, the everlasting Lord;Late in time behold him come,Offspring of a virgin's womb:

Veil'd in flesh, the Godhead see;Hail, th'incarnate Deity:Pleased, as man, with man to dwell,Jesus, our Emmanuel!

Hail! the heav'n-born Prince of peace!Hail! the Sun of Righteousness!Light and life to all he brings,Risen with healing in his wingsMild he lays his glory by,Born that man no more may die:Born to raise the sons of earth,Born to give them second birth.

STRATHAVEN CHORAL SOCIETY was founded in 1972 by the late David Knox anddraws its membership from across Lanarkshire and beyond. It is affiliated to MakingMusic - the National Federation of Music Societies - and strives for a varied repertoireand high standard of performance. It remains committed to the promotion of music.

Over the years the choir has performed over a hundred choral works, large and small,by a wide range of composers, from Bach to Vivaldi, from the 17th to 21st centuries. Thepast repertoire also includes opera, part songs and commissioned pieces.

The Society has sung on BBC radio and television and has performed in a variety ofvenues, mainly in the West of Scotland. In recent years we have hosted visits by choirsfrom Denmark and Sweden. We were able to make return visits as their guests, toeveryone’s musical and social enjoyment. Future exchanges are being considered.

Strathaven Choral Society is particularly interested in involving young people in musicmaking and in musical appreciation and has in the past received national recognition forits work with school children and in the community with three consecutive BT/NFMSInnovation Awards.

The choir greatly appreciates the dedication and enthusiasm of Musical Director,Christopher Barr and Rehearsal Accompanist, Razvan Luculescu.

We invite anyone who might fancy giving choral singing a try (or to revive a previousinterest) to come to any of our sessions. We rehearse in term-time on Mondays at7.30pm in the EVANGELICAL CHURCH, Lethame Road, Strathaven, just up LethameRoad from the traffic lights. Anyone interested in joining the Choral Society would bemade most welcome.
