JOYFUL LIVING -
Joyful Living Toward Maturity
Paul wants the church in Philippi to be unified Now however
instead of looking to Christ as the example of the humility they
will need he looks to Christ as the source of the maturity they
should cultivate which will yield the attitudes necessary for
unity Verses 12 and 13 give the command and the reason mdash they
are to work out their salvation because it is God who is at work
in them to accomplish his will and pleasure This formula places
the initiative and the power for our salvation and Christian
maturity in Godrsquos work while still requiring our participation in
the process We canrsquot accomplish Christian maturity any more
than we can accomplish our salvation Just as we are saved when
we receive what Jesus has done for us we grow when we live
out what God is doing in us
WEEKEND OF AUGUST 12
When Paul wrote his letter to the Philippians he was languishing in prison ndash talk about
a tough setting Nevertheless he told them (among other things) to ldquorejoice in the
Lord alwaysrdquo (44) and about how he had learned to be content in all circumstances
(411) Are his words little more than a first century version of Bobby McFerrinrsquos 1988
jingle ldquoDonrsquot Worry Be Happyrdquo True we may not be facing jail time but we certainly
have more than our fair share of trials these days coronavirus community social
unrest family stresses economic uncertainties international squabbles to name a few
What can we learn from Paulrsquos letter about the joy-filled living he describes What
difference might this type of life make for us and for the community God has called us
to serve While our focus will be on Paulrsquos letter our additional readings each week
will compliment Paulrsquos teachings and help us apply them in our faith journey

if too sunny and hot) and will include Scripture readings
prayer devotions and Holy Communion
We will offer this service according to CDC guidelines for
physical distance Single-use bulletins will be used and

Bethel Backpack Mission 2020
lsquoBlessing of the Backpacksrsquo
Bethel collected school supplies to fill 51 backpacks for White River Elementary and Hamilton Heights Elementary schools
Pastor Al blessed the backpacks this past
weekend before we sent them off
Bethel has been and will continue to be in compliance
with the Governorrsquos Executive Orders Given the most
recent order we felt that we should be clear about
expectations
Effective Tuesday July 28 Bethel will
follow the Governorrsquos latest Executive
order (20-37) by requiring individuals to
wear face masks while on campus with
some modifications which we are
allowed under the religious service
exemption We wish to maintain as
safe an environment as possible at church This is
based on our understanding of Jesus teachings to us
to demonstrate our love for neighbor in how we care
for those around us especially the vulnerable and at
risk
Specifically we expect that worshippers will wear
masks when entering and exiting the building when
moving from area to area within the building and
when coming forward to communion Worshipers
may remove their masks to take communion At other
times you may remove your mask if in worship a
meeting class our office space or in a work space
such as AV AND are able to maintain physical distance
from those outside your family If distancing is not
possible we ask you to wear a mask Because of
proximity communion servers will remain masked
while serving communion while readers band
members worship assistants and pastors will remove
their masks when leading worship as long as they
remain 6rsquo from anyone else We will not
ask children under the age of 8 or
anyone with a medical reason to wear a
mask However masks are
recommended for 3 to 8-year-olds
Worshippers on weekends or guests
during the week who come to church
without a face covering will be
provided one In addition we have our usual bottles
of hand sanitizer in the pews and the free-standing
and wall-mounted sanitizing stations distributed
throughout our campus
We will expect anyone with a fever or other
symptoms or known to have been in contact with
someone who is ill to self-quarantine until cleared by
their doctor Please let us know if we can help
To make this work we will rely on our common desire
to continue to hold public activities at church and our
commitment to serve our neighbor Thank you for
doing your part during these challenging times
As wersquove been saying each week ldquoWith Godrsquos help
Irsquoll get through thisrdquo

Joining Jesus in Mission
Welcome Pastor Greg Finke
The weekend of
September 18-
20 we will host
Rev Greg
Finke author of
Joining Jesus on
His Mission How
to be an
Everyday
Missionary for a ldquoKick the Tiresrdquo Mission weekend
We studied his book last fall and this weekend
will be the next step in our application of those
learnings Bethel is blessed with a heart for
mission outreach and the ministry approach of
joining Jesus on his mission we explored is a
natural complement to what we are already
doing
Our ldquoKick-the-Tiresrdquo Mission Weekend begins on
Friday evening when Pastor Finke meets with our
planning team and Church Council The
conference will take place on Saturday from
900 am to 200 pm The whole congregation is
invited and we will open it to interested churches
of our Mission District and beyond The weekend
will culminate with Greg preaching in our three
weekend services and leading an Adult Forum
during the Discipleship Hour Currently we plan
for this event to take place in our Fellowship Hall
and Sanctuary Our plans are flexible however
and if circumstances warrant we will move to a
ldquohybridrdquo in
person and
online
experience or
an online-only
presentation
Registration
information
will be
available in
early August
This weekend
will give us a
thorough way
to ldquokick the tiresrdquo on how Jesus is leading each of
us on a life of mission Come and see
Communion Fellowship
during COVID
As our journey through the
wilderness of COVID continues
some are naturally hesitant to
participate in large-group worship
A prolonged absence from
worship though raises the
spiritual issue of not receiving
communion The question has
been raised if we could do again
what we did at Easter make
available the individual communion
cups that worshipers picked up
and shared at home while
watching our worship video online
At this time our Bishop has
indicated that this sort of at-home
ldquovirtual communionrdquo is not a
theologically acceptable form of
receiving communion The very
nature of communion is to be with
other believers at the same time
and place and worship experience
sharing our Lordrsquos Supper Simply
consuming the sacrament while
being physically separate from one
another and using elements that
are themselves distinct from those
used during the public worship
service does a serious disservice
to the communal nature of the
meal Jesus offers us
Instead we have chosen to offer
another alternative for those
uncomfortable with large-group
worship that still maintains the
spirit and intent of our communion
service The first and third
Sundays of the month we offer a
small group meditative
communion service at 1p on the
Prayer Circle off the Peace Trail
(or at the picnic shelter if the
weather is too hot) This service is
limited to 16 people including the
pastors and includes all the
desired elements that make up our
usual communion service Ample
physical distance is available and
you may wear a mask if you prefer
We ask you to sign up for this on
the sign-up page posted on the
outside door to the church or by
calling the church office during
business hours

Pastoral site visit scheduled
The Call Committee is
delighted to announce that we
will be hosting a pastoral
candidate and his family here
the weekend of August 15-16
We are finalizing the complete
schedule of activities but they
will include a meet-and-greet
fellowship time after worship
on Saturday night and
between the services on
Sunday morning and the
opportunity to hear him
preach at all services We will
share a full biography with the
congregation that weekend
but in the interests of
respecting the confidentiality
of the process we can tell you
now he was trained in the
college and seminary system
of the Lutheran Church-
Missouri Synod before joining
the NALC several years ago
He has significant experience
as a solo pastor in more urban
settings and is interested in
serving in a staff setting as an
associate pastor with a more
focused responsibility
Site visit planned
The Youth and Family
Minister search team had a
positive second interview on
Tuesday and we will invite
our finalist and his family for a
site visit to Bethel in August
The date is still to be
determined but the visit will
include opportunities for
fellowship and presence
during worship He has a BA
in Christian Ministry and has
been serving as a Retreat
Coordinator at a Christian
camp in Washington State
since 2016 Prior to that he
was a substitute teacher and
worked for FedEx As with our
pastoral search we will share
more biographical information
about him and his family
during the visit

Based on Matthew 1413-21
The most challenging time for
congregations financially is often
the end of summer June July
and August usually find
parishioners away from Sunday
worship mdash away from the
gathered community which
unfortunately means a drop in
offerings And what about this
year when in most places the
gathered worshiping
communities have not been
ldquogathered mdashrdquo at least not
gathered in the church nave for
worship And for those
congregations who have been
able to gather for worship for a
few weeks it generally means
not passing the offering plates It
remains to be seen whether
COVID-19 the summer months
social distancing and the lack of
normal worship services causes
congregational offerings to drop
more than usual as the summer
draws to a close Some have been
predicting a potential 20 drop
in congregational giving since the
pandemic began Some have
suggested giving to the North
American Lutheran Church
(NALC) will reflect a similar
downturn Some have taken
measures to address fears of a
serious loss of income from
giving
What are we hearing from our
congregations in this regard
Surprisingly and one might say
miraculously what we are
hearing is that congregational
offerings in some places seem to
be up by 20 How can this be
As with the disciples gathered
with Jesus and more than 5000
people on the seashore it seems
that some of our members are
responding to the need created by
the pandemic by placing their
resources in the Lordrsquos hands
that mission and ministry may
continue and indeed be
multiplied This is the great
miracle and message of the
feeding of more than 5000 In
the Lordrsquos hands as He takes our
humble loaves and fish and
blesses them they satisfy human
need yet still provide sufficient
remains for the Church mdash a hint
manifested by the 12 baskets full
left over mdash 12 being the number
of the Church founded upon the
12 apostles What an encouraging
message for us as disciples and
followers of Jesus for our
congregations and the NALC
By all indicators we are not yet
through the COVID-19 pandemic
and there may indeed be financial
stresses and strains within
congregations and the NALC as a
whole And yet let us be faithful
stewards as we are able in this
season of trial uncertainty and
challenge In a time of great need
and stress the disciples of Jesus
respond generously and
sacrificially Thanks be to God

Communion Fellowship
during COVID
As our journey through the
wilderness of COVID continues
some are naturally hesitant to
participate in large-group worship
A prolonged absence from
worship though raises the
spiritual issue of not receiving
communion The question has
been raised if we could do again
what we did at Easter make
available the individual communion
cups that worshipers picked up
and shared at home while
watching our worship video online
At this time our Bishop has
indicated that this sort of at-home
ldquovirtual communionrdquo is not a
theologically acceptable form of
receiving communion The very
nature of communion is to be with
other believers at the same time
and place and worship experience
sharing our Lordrsquos Supper Simply
consuming the sacrament while
being physically separate from one
another and using elements that
are themselves distinct from those
used during the public worship
service does a serious disservice
to the communal nature of the
meal Jesus offers us
Instead we have chosen to offer
another alternative for those
uncomfortable with large-group
worship that still maintains the
spirit and intent of our communion
service The first and third
Sundays of the month we offer a
small group meditative
communion service at 1p on the
Prayer Circle off the Peace Trail
(or at the picnic shelter if the
weather is too hot) This service is
limited to 16 people including the
pastors and includes all the
desired elements that make up our
usual communion service Ample
physical distance is available and
you may wear a mask if you prefer
We ask you to sign up for this on
the sign-up page posted on the
outside door to the church or by

Pastoral site visit scheduled
The Call Committee is
delighted to announce that we
will be hosting a pastoral
candidate and his family here
the weekend of August 15-16
We are finalizing the complete
schedule of activities but they
will include a meet-and-greet
fellowship time after worship
on Saturday night and
between the services on
Sunday morning and the
opportunity to hear him
preach at all services We will
share a full biography with the
congregation that weekend
but in the interests of
respecting the confidentiality
of the process we can tell you
now he was trained in the
college and seminary system
of the Lutheran Church-
Missouri Synod before joining
the NALC several years ago
He has significant experience
as a solo pastor in more urban
settings and is interested in
serving in a staff setting as an
associate pastor with a more
focused responsibility
Site visit planned
The Youth and Family
Minister search team had a
positive second interview on
Tuesday and we will invite
our finalist and his family for a
site visit to Bethel in August
The date is still to be
determined but the visit will
include opportunities for
fellowship and presence
during worship He has a BA
in Christian Ministry and has
been serving as a Retreat
Coordinator at a Christian
camp in Washington State
since 2016 Prior to that he
was a substitute teacher and
worked for FedEx As with our
pastoral search we will share
more biographical information
about him and his family

Based on Matthew 1413-21
The most challenging time for
congregations financially is often
the end of summer June July
and August usually find
parishioners away from Sunday
worship mdash away from the
gathered community which
unfortunately means a drop in
offerings And what about this
year when in most places the
gathered worshiping
communities have not been
ldquogathered mdashrdquo at least not
gathered in the church nave for
worship And for those
congregations who have been
able to gather for worship for a
few weeks it generally means
not passing the offering plates It
remains to be seen whether
COVID-19 the summer months
social distancing and the lack of
normal worship services causes
congregational offerings to drop
more than usual as the summer
draws to a close Some have been
predicting a potential 20 drop
in congregational giving since the
pandemic began Some have
suggested giving to the North
American Lutheran Church
(NALC) will reflect a similar
downturn Some have taken
measures to address fears of a
serious loss of income from
giving
What are we hearing from our
congregations in this regard
Surprisingly and one might say
miraculously what we are
hearing is that congregational
offerings in some places seem to
be up by 20 How can this be
As with the disciples gathered
with Jesus and more than 5000
people on the seashore it seems
that some of our members are
responding to the need created by
the pandemic by placing their
resources in the Lordrsquos hands
that mission and ministry may
continue and indeed be
multiplied This is the great
miracle and message of the
feeding of more than 5000 In
the Lordrsquos hands as He takes our
humble loaves and fish and
blesses them they satisfy human
need yet still provide sufficient
remains for the Church mdash a hint
manifested by the 12 baskets full
left over mdash 12 being the number
of the Church founded upon the
12 apostles What an encouraging
message for us as disciples and
followers of Jesus for our
congregations and the NALC
By all indicators we are not yet
through the COVID-19 pandemic
and there may indeed be financial
stresses and strains within
congregations and the NALC as a
whole And yet let us be faithful
stewards as we are able in this
season of trial uncertainty and
challenge In a time of great need
and stress the disciples of Jesus
respond generously and
sacrificially Thanks be to God

if too sunny and hot) and will include Scripture readings
prayer devotions and Holy Communion
We will offer this service according to CDC guidelines for

no offering will be taken You may sit on the wooden
benches or bring your own camping-type chair You may
also wear a mask though one will not be required If you
are having any flu-like symptoms please stay home for

Bethel Backpack Mission 2020
lsquoBlessing of the Backpacksrsquo
Bethel collected school supplies to fill 51 backpacks for White River Elementary and Hamilton Heights Elementary schools
Pastor Al blessed the backpacks this past
weekend before we sent them off
Bethel has been and will continue to be in compliance
with the Governorrsquos Executive Orders Given the most
recent order we felt that we should be clear about
expectations
Effective Tuesday July 28 Bethel will
follow the Governorrsquos latest Executive
order (20-37) by requiring individuals to
wear face masks while on campus with
some modifications which we are
allowed under the religious service
exemption We wish to maintain as
safe an environment as possible at church This is
based on our understanding of Jesus teachings to us
to demonstrate our love for neighbor in how we care
for those around us especially the vulnerable and at
risk
Specifically we expect that worshippers will wear
masks when entering and exiting the building when
moving from area to area within the building and
when coming forward to communion Worshipers
may remove their masks to take communion At other
times you may remove your mask if in worship a
meeting class our office space or in a work space
such as AV AND are able to maintain physical distance
from those outside your family If distancing is not
possible we ask you to wear a mask Because of
proximity communion servers will remain masked
while serving communion while readers band
members worship assistants and pastors will remove
their masks when leading worship as long as they
remain 6rsquo from anyone else We will not
ask children under the age of 8 or
anyone with a medical reason to wear a
mask However masks are
recommended for 3 to 8-year-olds
Worshippers on weekends or guests
during the week who come to church
without a face covering will be
provided one In addition we have our usual bottles
of hand sanitizer in the pews and the free-standing
and wall-mounted sanitizing stations distributed
throughout our campus
We will expect anyone with a fever or other
symptoms or known to have been in contact with
someone who is ill to self-quarantine until cleared by
their doctor Please let us know if we can help
To make this work we will rely on our common desire
to continue to hold public activities at church and our
commitment to serve our neighbor Thank you for
doing your part during these challenging times
As wersquove been saying each week ldquoWith Godrsquos help
Irsquoll get through thisrdquo

doing
Our ldquoKick-the-Tiresrdquo Mission Weekend begins on
Friday evening when Pastor Finke meets with our
planning team and Church Council The
conference will take place on Saturday from
900 am to 200 pm The whole congregation is
invited and we will open it to interested churches
of our Mission District and beyond The weekend
will culminate with Greg preaching in our three
weekend services and leading an Adult Forum
during the Discipleship Hour Currently we plan
for this event to take place in our Fellowship Hall

Based on Matthew 1413-21
The most challenging time for
congregations financially is often
the end of summer June July
and August usually find
parishioners away from Sunday
worship mdash away from the
gathered community which
unfortunately means a drop in
offerings And what about this
year when in most places the
gathered worshiping
communities have not been
ldquogathered mdashrdquo at least not
gathered in the church nave for
worship And for those
congregations who have been
able to gather for worship for a
few weeks it generally means
not passing the offering plates It
remains to be seen whether
COVID-19 the summer months
social distancing and the lack of
normal worship services causes
congregational offerings to drop
more than usual as the summer
draws to a close Some have been
predicting a potential 20 drop
in congregational giving since the
pandemic began Some have
suggested giving to the North
American Lutheran Church
(NALC) will reflect a similar
downturn Some have taken
measures to address fears of a
serious loss of income from
giving
What are we hearing from our
congregations in this regard
Surprisingly and one might say
miraculously what we are
hearing is that congregational
offerings in some places seem to
be up by 20 How can this be
As with the disciples gathered
with Jesus and more than 5000
people on the seashore it seems
that some of our members are
responding to the need created by
the pandemic by placing their
resources in the Lordrsquos hands
that mission and ministry may
continue and indeed be
multiplied This is the great
miracle and message of the
feeding of more than 5000 In
the Lordrsquos hands as He takes our
humble loaves and fish and
blesses them they satisfy human
need yet still provide sufficient
remains for the Church mdash a hint
manifested by the 12 baskets full
left over mdash 12 being the number
of the Church founded upon the
12 apostles What an encouraging
message for us as disciples and
followers of Jesus for our
congregations and the NALC
By all indicators we are not yet
through the COVID-19 pandemic
and there may indeed be financial
stresses and strains within
congregations and the NALC as a
whole And yet let us be faithful
stewards as we are able in this
season of trial uncertainty and
challenge In a time of great need
and stress the disciples of Jesus
respond generously and
sacrificially Thanks be to God

Bethel Backpack Mission 2020
lsquoBlessing of the Backpacksrsquo
Bethel collected school supplies to fill 51 backpacks for White River Elementary and Hamilton Heights Elementary schools
Pastor Al blessed the backpacks this past
weekend before we sent them off
Bethel has been and will continue to be in compliance
with the Governorrsquos Executive Orders Given the most
recent order we felt that we should be clear about
expectations
Effective Tuesday July 28 Bethel will
follow the Governorrsquos latest Executive
order (20-37) by requiring individuals to
wear face masks while on campus with
some modifications which we are
allowed under the religious service
exemption We wish to maintain as
safe an environment as possible at church This is
based on our understanding of Jesus teachings to us
to demonstrate our love for neighbor in how we care
for those around us especially the vulnerable and at
risk
Specifically we expect that worshippers will wear
masks when entering and exiting the building when
moving from area to area within the building and
when coming forward to communion Worshipers
may remove their masks to take communion At other
times you may remove your mask if in worship a
meeting class our office space or in a work space
such as AV AND are able to maintain physical distance
from those outside your family If distancing is not
possible we ask you to wear a mask Because of
proximity communion servers will remain masked
while serving communion while readers band
members worship assistants and pastors will remove
their masks when leading worship as long as they
remain 6rsquo from anyone else We will not
ask children under the age of 8 or
anyone with a medical reason to wear a
mask However masks are
recommended for 3 to 8-year-olds
Worshippers on weekends or guests
during the week who come to church
without a face covering will be
provided one In addition we have our usual bottles
of hand sanitizer in the pews and the free-standing
and wall-mounted sanitizing stations distributed
throughout our campus
We will expect anyone with a fever or other
symptoms or known to have been in contact with
someone who is ill to self-quarantine until cleared by
their doctor Please let us know if we can help
To make this work we will rely on our common desire
to continue to hold public activities at church and our
commitment to serve our neighbor Thank you for
doing your part during these challenging times
As wersquove been saying each week ldquoWith Godrsquos help
Irsquoll get through thisrdquo

now he was trained in the

Based on Matthew 1413-21
The most challenging time for

the end of summer June July

unfortunately means a drop in

COVID-19 the summer months
social distancing and the lack of
normal worship services causes
congregational offerings to drop
more than usual as the summer
draws to a close Some have been
predicting a potential 20 drop
in congregational giving since the
pandemic began Some have
suggested giving to the North
American Lutheran Church
(NALC) will reflect a similar

measures to address fears of a
serious loss of income from
giving
What are we hearing from our
congregations in this regard
Surprisingly and one might say
miraculously what we are
hearing is that congregational
offerings in some places seem to
be up by 20 How can this be
As with the disciples gathered
with Jesus and more than 5000
people on the seashore it seems
that some of our members are
responding to the need created by
the pandemic by placing their
resources in the Lordrsquos hands
that mission and ministry may
continue and indeed be
multiplied This is the great
miracle and message of the
feeding of more than 5000 In
the Lordrsquos hands as He takes our

blesses them they satisfy human
need yet still provide sufficient
remains for the Church mdash a hint
manifested by the 12 baskets full

of the Church founded upon the

message for us as disciples and
followers of Jesus for our
congregations and the NALC
By all indicators we are not yet
through the COVID-19 pandemic
and there may indeed be financial
stresses and strains within
congregations and the NALC as a
whole And yet let us be faithful
stewards as we are able in this
season of trial uncertainty and
challenge In a time of great need
and stress the disciples of Jesus
respond generously and
sacrificially Thanks be to God

Pastoral site visit scheduled
The Call Committee is
delighted to announce that we
will be hosting a pastoral
candidate and his family here
the weekend of August 15-16
We are finalizing the complete
schedule of activities but they
will include a meet-and-greet
fellowship time after worship
on Saturday night and
between the services on
Sunday morning and the
opportunity to hear him
preach at all services We will
share a full biography with the
congregation that weekend
but in the interests of
respecting the confidentiality
of the process we can tell you
now he was trained in the

of the Lutheran Church-
Missouri Synod before joining
the NALC several years ago
He has significant experience
as a solo pastor in more urban
settings and is interested in
serving in a staff setting as an
associate pastor with a more

Site visit planned
The Youth and Family
Minister search team had a
positive second interview on
Tuesday and we will invite
our finalist and his family for a

since 2016 Prior to that he
was a substitute teacher and

not passing the offering plates It
remains to be seen whether
COVID-19 the summer months
social distancing and the lack of
normal worship services causes
congregational offerings to drop
more than usual as the summer
draws to a close Some have been
predicting a potential 20 drop
in congregational giving since the
pandemic began Some have
suggested giving to the North
American Lutheran Church
(NALC) will reflect a similar

What are we hearing from our

Joining Jesus in Mission
Welcome Pastor Greg Finke
The weekend of
September 18-
20 we will host
Rev Greg
Finke author of
Joining Jesus on
His Mission How
to be an
Everyday
Missionary for a ldquoKick the Tiresrdquo Mission weekend
We studied his book last fall and this weekend
will be the next step in our application of those
learnings Bethel is blessed with a heart for
mission outreach and the ministry approach of
joining Jesus on his mission we explored is a
natural complement to what we are already
doing
Our ldquoKick-the-Tiresrdquo Mission Weekend begins on
Friday evening when Pastor Finke meets with our
planning team and Church Council The
conference will take place on Saturday from
900 am to 200 pm The whole congregation is
invited and we will open it to interested churches
of our Mission District and beyond The weekend
will culminate with Greg preaching in our three
weekend services and leading an Adult Forum
during the Discipleship Hour Currently we plan
for this event to take place in our Fellowship Hall
and Sanctuary Our plans are flexible however
and if circumstances warrant we will move to a
ldquohybridrdquo in
person and
online
experience or
an online-only
presentation
Registration
information
will be
available in
early August
This weekend
will give us a
thorough way
to ldquokick the tiresrdquo on how Jesus is leading each of
us on a life of mission Come and see
Communion Fellowship
during COVID
As our journey through the
wilderness of COVID continues
some are naturally hesitant to
participate in large-group worship
A prolonged absence from
worship though raises the
spiritual issue of not receiving
communion The question has
been raised if we could do again
what we did at Easter make
available the individual communion
cups that worshipers picked up
and shared at home while
watching our worship video online
At this time our Bishop has
indicated that this sort of at-home
ldquovirtual communionrdquo is not a
theologically acceptable form of
receiving communion The very
nature of communion is to be with
other believers at the same time
and place and worship experience
sharing our Lordrsquos Supper Simply
consuming the sacrament while
being physically separate from one
another and using elements that
are themselves distinct from those
used during the public worship
service does a serious disservice
to the communal nature of the
meal Jesus offers us
Instead we have chosen to offer
another alternative for those
uncomfortable with large-group
worship that still maintains the
spirit and intent of our communion
service The first and third
Sundays of the month we offer a
small group meditative
communion service at 1p on the
Prayer Circle off the Peace Trail
(or at the picnic shelter if the
weather is too hot) This service is
limited to 16 people including the
pastors and includes all the
desired elements that make up our
usual communion service Ample
physical distance is available and
you may wear a mask if you prefer
We ask you to sign up for this on
the sign-up page posted on the
outside door to the church or by
calling the church office during
business hours

Pastoral site visit scheduled
The Call Committee is
delighted to announce that we
will be hosting a pastoral
candidate and his family here
the weekend of August 15-16
We are finalizing the complete
schedule of activities but they
will include a meet-and-greet
fellowship time after worship
on Saturday night and
between the services on
Sunday morning and the
opportunity to hear him
preach at all services We will
share a full biography with the
congregation that weekend
but in the interests of
respecting the confidentiality
of the process we can tell you
now he was trained in the
college and seminary system
of the Lutheran Church-
Missouri Synod before joining
the NALC several years ago
He has significant experience
as a solo pastor in more urban
settings and is interested in
serving in a staff setting as an
associate pastor with a more
focused responsibility
Site visit planned
The Youth and Family
Minister search team had a
positive second interview on
Tuesday and we will invite
our finalist and his family for a
site visit to Bethel in August
The date is still to be
determined but the visit will
include opportunities for
fellowship and presence
during worship He has a BA
in Christian Ministry and has
been serving as a Retreat
Coordinator at a Christian
camp in Washington State
since 2016 Prior to that he
was a substitute teacher and
worked for FedEx As with our

more biographical information
about him and his family

Based on Matthew 1413-21
The most challenging time for
congregations financially is often
the end of summer June July
and August usually find
parishioners away from Sunday
worship mdash away from the
gathered community which
unfortunately means a drop in
offerings And what about this
year when in most places the
gathered worshiping
communities have not been
ldquogathered mdashrdquo at least not
gathered in the church nave for
worship And for those
congregations who have been
able to gather for worship for a
few weeks it generally means
not passing the offering plates It
remains to be seen whether
COVID-19 the summer months
social distancing and the lack of
normal worship services causes
congregational offerings to drop
more than usual as the summer
draws to a close Some have been
predicting a potential 20 drop
in congregational giving since the
pandemic began Some have
suggested giving to the North
American Lutheran Church
(NALC) will reflect a similar
downturn Some have taken
measures to address fears of a
serious loss of income from
giving
What are we hearing from our
congregations in this regard
Surprisingly and one might say
miraculously what we are
hearing is that congregational
offerings in some places seem to
be up by 20 How can this be
As with the disciples gathered
with Jesus and more than 5000
people on the seashore it seems
that some of our members are
responding to the need created by
the pandemic by placing their
resources in the Lordrsquos hands
that mission and ministry may
continue and indeed be
multiplied This is the great
miracle and message of the
feeding of more than 5000 In
the Lordrsquos hands as He takes our
humble loaves and fish and
blesses them they satisfy human
need yet still provide sufficient
remains for the Church mdash a hint
manifested by the 12 baskets full
left over mdash 12 being the number
of the Church founded upon the
12 apostles What an encouraging
message for us as disciples and
followers of Jesus for our
congregations and the NALC
By all indicators we are not yet
through the COVID-19 pandemic
and there may indeed be financial
stresses and strains within
congregations and the NALC as a
whole And yet let us be faithful
stewards as we are able in this
season of trial uncertainty and
challenge In a time of great need
and stress the disciples of Jesus
respond generously and
sacrificially Thanks be to God

measures to address fears of a
serious loss of income from
giving
What are we hearing from our
congregations in this regard
Surprisingly and one might say
miraculously what we are
hearing is that congregational
offerings in some places seem to
be up by 20 How can this be
As with the disciples gathered
with Jesus and more than 5000
people on the seashore it seems
that some of our members are
responding to the need created by
the pandemic by placing their
resources in the Lordrsquos hands
that mission and ministry may
continue and indeed be
multiplied This is the great
miracle and message of the
feeding of more than 5000 In
the Lordrsquos hands as He takes our
humble loaves and fish and
blesses them they satisfy human
need yet still provide sufficient
remains for the Church mdash a hint
manifested by the 12 baskets full
left over mdash 12 being the number
of the Church founded upon the
12 apostles What an encouraging
message for us as disciples and
followers of Jesus for our
congregations and the NALC
By all indicators we are not yet
through the COVID-19 pandemic
and there may indeed be financial
stresses and strains within
congregations and the NALC as a
whole And yet let us be faithful
stewards as we are able in this
season of trial uncertainty and
challenge In a time of great need
and stress the disciples of Jesus
respond generously and
sacrificially Thanks be to God
