Baldor Electric manufactures a wide variety of tachometerswith DC, AC, and digital output. Tachs are available frombasic low-cost speed indication to an encoder-based digital tach designed for use with the latest speed andposition controls.

“Just close enough” isn’t adequate anymore! An increasing number of applications require feedback toindicate exactly how fast a motor is running. Accurateprocess control is possible by using one of Baldor’sindustrial tachometer designs.

Baldor tachometers are used in elevators, plastic extruders,printing presses, antenna drives, and many other diverseapplications.

Why Use Tach Feedback?The purpose of tach feedback is to improve the drive’s regulation under varying speed and load conditions. MostSCR motor drives have a regulation spec of 1% of base speed with armature feedback. By adding a tachometerfor feedback, regulation becomes 1% of set speed.

Which tach should I specify?For basic motor feedback to an SCR motor control, our most popular DC tach is either the PTG50XP orPTG50XPS. This tach is rated at 50 VDC/1000 RPM. Tach adapters are available for these tachs allowing use onmost of Baldor’s DC motor line. Their industry-standard PY mounting flange makes them interchangeable withmany other tachometers. Baldor’s new 60V DC metric tach matches the mounting and electrical specs of popularmodels from Europe. These tachs are available in the standard TENV enclosure or a Washdown IP65 enclosure,from stock. Baldor does not offer an Explosion Proof tach for hazardous locations.For best performance, the tach coupling should be an anti-backlash type. Shielded lead wire should be used withthe shield, grounded only at the control (not at both ends). Tach leads should be in separate conduit from motorpower leads.

Encoders and Pulse GeneratorsWith the popularity of digital feedback for motor speed and position, Baldor offers many different options forour motors. AC vector drive motors are supplied with a hollow shaft optical encoder. DC motors haveaccessory faces that allow the mounting of a PY flange encoder using an adapter kit.

Some customers specify feedback from different manufacturers. On Baldor AC inverter or vector drive motors,this can now be accommodated through our Mod Express department. General purpose applications are wellsuited to optical encoders. On rugged mill and chemical applications, magnetic pulse generators should beused due to the dirty environments. Baldor generally supplies these from Avtron, Northstar (LakeShore) andBEI.

On custom motors, almost any type of feedback from any manufacturer may be supplied. Contact your localBaldor office with your requirements.
