Giving Matters

It’s our pleasure to present California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) Foundation’s Annual Report for FY 2017.

The community CHMC serves has some of the highest incidence of chronic disease, highest population densities, lowest incomes, and highest unemployment and underemployment rates in Los Angeles County. Forty percent of our residents have not received a high school diploma and household incomes are nearly 40% less than the County median. To address these needs, CHMC has a robust community health and wellness program to bring screening, education, and critical health-related services to our neighbors who need them most. Our patients seek out CHMC because of the exceptional quality of our care. An important element of our mission is a commitment to provide the same high level of care to all, regardless of one’s ability to pay for services.

Your support is the margin of excellence for California Hospital. It allows us to do more than we could otherwise, and the results can be measured in lives enriched, healed, and saved.

Thanks to your support, this year, we raised over $18.4M for the hospital, exceeding our revenue goals and performing under budget on our operating expenses. We thank you, our generous donors, many of whom are listed in this report. Thank you for being an integral part of all we do. And to our Foundation Board and Community Board members and other volunteer leaders—your sound guidance consistently brings us to new heights.

Foundation Grant Awards From July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, California Hospital Medical Center was awarded $4,429,685 in grant funds for its inpatient and community benefit programs.

The JIB Community Building Initiative $36,593

Funding supports the expansion of the Hope Street Family Literacy Program, a two-generational model established over 15 years ago to support low-income parents in their role as their child’s first teacher. The program provides parenting skills and literacy training; fosters children’s early language, cognitive, social-emotional, and motor development through center-based early childhood education. It also supports family stability and economic self-sufficiency through intensive in-home case management and linkages with community health care, mental health, housing, adult education, and employment services.

Funding supported the purchase of a PANDA™ infant radiant warmer for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). PANDA™ infant warmers combine the thermal advantages of an isolette with the access advantages of a radiant warmer. The design of the PANDA™ warmer allows for X-rays and other procedures without having to move the baby. It also monitors oxygen saturation and heart rate without additional equipment.

Walter J. and Holly O. Thomson Foundation $25,000

The Walter J. and Holly O. Thomson Foundation awarded funding to support the purchase of an AngioJet™ Thrombectomy System, a compact and mobile console designed to effectively remove potentially life-threatening blood clots. A blood clot can create serious and potentially fatal complications for a patient including obstructing blood flow and reducing or inhibiting oxygen to essential organs; lead to a heart attack or stroke; and affect multiple organs or physiological systems at once if the clot moves around the body.

Supporting Programs for Local FamiliesThe generosity of our donors enables California Hospital Medical Center to be a “hospital without walls,” by funding a number of community benefit programs that promote holistic health and wellness

for adults and children alike. These include our award-winning Hope Street Margolis Family Center, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017.

What’s the first thing most kids do when they come home from school? Raid the refrigerator, of course! But imagine what it’s like for a child who finds their refrigerator empty. That’s why Matthew Katz, who is CEO and Founder of online payment protection and management

solutions firm Verifi, committed to providing a daily nutritious after-school snack for Hope Street Margolis Family Center students. Once their hunger pangs are satisfied, these kids are ready to release some energy on our basketball court or ping pong table before hitting

the books and computers with Hope Street’s afterschool teachers and volunteer mentors. Thank you, Matthew, for your generous ongoing commitment to supporting Hope Street students’ well-being and academic success.

Your donations make a difference. Recently, the CHMC Foundation was able to provide funds for new hospital equipment and to support continuing education for our caregivers.

CHMC Foundation transferred $2,856,658 to the hospital to fund projects including:

Community Dental Partnership – oral health education and access to free periodontal services for uninsured diabetic patients who require medication for control

Community Health Education – providing comprehensive chronic disease health education and screenings for Korean-speaking community residents

Coordinated Care Initiative – to reduce inpatient readmission among patients with congestive heart failure, hypertension, and diabetes

Endoscopy Towers – using infrared technology and high-definition video to give surgeons greater control and patients better outcomes
