Wisdom Teeth and Their Removal

The last four of the 32 teeth to surface in the mouth, wisdom teeth received their name because they make their appearance in the late teens or early twenties, when a person has matured past adolescence and has begun to acquire adult “wisdom.” In many cases, there’s not enough room in the mouth to accommodate these third molars at the back of the upper and lower jaws.

Wisdom teeth that do not properly erupt and function alongside the other molars can become stuck in a position that can be uncomfortable or harmful. When such an impacted wisdom tooth causes swelling, pain, decay, or infection, it’s removed to prevent further complications such as disease, infection, or damage to other teeth. There are three levels of impaction:

- Soft tissue impaction, in which the tooth has erupted through the bone, but the gum covers all or part of the crown, - Partial bony impaction, in which part of the tooth’s crown remains submerged below the gum and jawbone, and- Complete bony impaction, in which the tooth has not erupted from the jawbone.

Wisdom tooth removal is a fairly common procedure performed in an oral surgery suite. The level of impaction determines the complexity of the removal procedure and the anesthesia required, andthe procedure does not require an overnight stay.
