From the WHA President…

Calendar of Events

Dear Fellow Hereford Breeders,Spring is finally here and what a welcome site. Thespring rains are here which will quickly green up thepastures. Cows with calves are all starting to work thefences in an attempt to get to the lush spring pastures. These are all the signs of a new year in agriculture whichshows potential for a profitable cattle industry. At the WHA sale this year in Lancaster, we hosted arecord sale with a lot of enthusiasm by both the consignorsand the buyers. We would like to thank everyone involvedand a special thank you goes to the Wisconsin HerefordWomen for providing the sale lunch. Sale manager, CalebAhrens, was very dedicated to organizing a successful sale. The State Sale was also a venue to support the Junior

National Hereford Expo (JNHE) being hosted by Wisconsin in 2016. The sale startedwith a successful semen auction organized by BJ Jones and Sondra Brancel, alongwith the auctioning of a Hereford Scene in 2016 theme quilt made Holly Paulson. The proceeds were donated to the 2016 JNHE. The WHA thanks each of the peoplefor their time to make this event successful. The WHA board has put an emphasis on promotion and advertising this year. Ken

Pierce has worked with several Wisconsin agriculture newspapers by inserting paidadvertisements promoting Hereford cattle. Ken has been successful in working withthese same publications in getting them to insert several news articles featuringHereford activities. If anyone has news articles that will promote the Herefordbreed, please get this information to Ken.We have also worked to update the WHA website for the purpose of promoting

WHA activities. This site is now a media to inform us of past and future activitiesoccurring in the Hereford industry. We have started sending e-mails to our currente-mail list directing people to this site. We hope to expand this list within the nextmonth to include over 1000 people in the Midwest. This will give WHA membersthe opportunity to promote their programs by the use of the banner ads on thiswebsite. Contact Jane Adolph to discuss these banner ad advertising opportunitieson the WHA website.Have a great spring and I hope to see each of you at the various WHA activities

this summer.

Minute with the MeentsThe snow piles have finally meltedaway, the days are getting longer, thenew calves are hitting the ground, andthe grass is beginning to show signs ofturning green. This is a very optimistictransition period from winter to spring, and then to summer.Currently, the American HerefordAssociation is in a transitional period ofleadership. On February 10, 2015,Craig Huffhines stepped down after 18years as Executive Vice President ofthe American Hereford Association. OnFebruary 23, the AHA Board ofDirectors named Jack Ward, Interim

Executive Vice President. I am very optimistic that the twelveperson board of directors will find the best person available tolead the Hereford breed into the future.Craig Huffhines accepted the position of Executive Vice

President of the American Quarter Horse Association inAmarillo, Texas. Mr. Huffhines joined the AHA in 1992, asdirector of feedlot and carcass programs for Certified HerefordBeef (CHB). He transitioned to CHB director in 1995, andlaunched the breed-specific branded-beef program for the AHA.In 1997, Craig was named Executive Vice President, and startedthe Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR). Thisprogram was instrumental in building the Hereford data base.Craig Huffhines surrounded himself with outstanding people,

thus leaving the American Hereford Association on a strong andsolid foundation. Imagine in your own mind what Hereford cattlelooked like in 1992 when Craig Huffhines joined the AHA, andwhat Hereford cattle look like today. If you can’t imagine that, find a Hereford Journal or a Polled Hereford World from theearly 1990’s, and look at the photos. You as breeders of Herefordcattle have made tremendous progress. To Craig Huffhines, I say “Thank you – job well done.” To

Hereford breeders, I say “Keep up the great work, and continueto build Hereford cattle that meet the changing market place.”The demand for registered Hereford bulls and females has beenoutstanding this spring throughout the United States. Please taketime to check out the “Market Place” sale results on the AHAwebsite: www.hereford.org. Compare the pricing structure ofHereford cattle in 2015 to 2000. I think these are signs thatHerefords are in an optimistic transitional period.Remember to make your cattle better today because you have tomarket them tomorrow!
