NETWORK CONFIGURATION AND

PLANNING

SMCs EZ Connect Wireless Solution supports a stand-alone wireless network configuration, as well as anintegrated configuration with 10 Mbps Ethernet LANs.

The SMC2602W PCI adapter can be configured as:

Ad hoc for departmental or SOHO LANs

 Infrastructure for enterprise LANs

Network Topologies

Ad hoc Wireless LAN

An ad hoc wireless LAN consists of a group ofcomputers, each equipped with a wireless adapter, connected via radio signals as an independent wirelessLAN. Computers in a specific ad hoc wireless LANmust therefore be configured to the same radiochannel.

An ad hoc wireless LAN can be used for a branchoffice or SOHO operation.

Page 24: Wireless PCI Adapter · 2016. 2. 16. · User Guide SMC2602W EZ Connect Wireless PCI Adapter u 11 Mbps data rate: provides alternative for wired LANs that can dramatically cut costs

Infrastructure Wireless LAN

The SMC2602W can also provide access to a wiredLAN for wireless workstations. An integrated wiredand wireless LAN is called an Infrastructureconfiguration. A Basic Service Set (BSS) consists of agroup of wireless PC users, and an access point that isdirectly connected to the wired LAN. Each wireless PCin this BSS can talk to any computer in its wirelessgroup via a radio link, or access other computers ornetwork resources in the wired LAN infrastructure viathe access point.

The infrastructure configuration not only extends theaccessibility of wireless PCs to the wired LAN, but alsodoubles the effective wireless transmission range forwireless PCs by passing their signal through one ormore access points.

A wireless infrastructure can be used for access to acentral database, or for connection between mobileworkers, as shown in the following figure.

Setting the Communication Domain

Stationary Wireless PCs

The Basic Service Set (BSS) is the communicationdomain for each SMC2652W access point. For wirelessPCs that do not need to support roaming, set thedomain identifier (SSID) for the wireless card to theBSS ID of the access point you want to connect to.Check with your administrator for the BSS ID of theSMC2652W access point he wants you to connect to.

Roaming Wireless PCs

A wireless infrastructure can also support roaming formobile workers. More than one access point can beconfigured to create an Extended Service Set (ESS).By placing the access points so that a continuouscoverage area is created, wireless users within this ESScan roam freely. All SMC2602W PCI adapters andSMC2652W access points within a specific ESS mustbe configured with the same SS ID.

Before setting up an ESS for roaming, you need tochoose a clear radio channel and ideal location for theSMC2652W access points to maximize performance.(Refer to Using the Wireless LAN Utility on page 19for detailed information on installation and usage.)

Encryption Screen

The WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) implementedin SMCs EZ Connect Wireless PCI Card is basedon an RC4 encryption algorithm. The security keysprovided to ensure data confidentiality are four 10bit keys for the 64 bit Wep setting (first screenbelow) and one 26 - bit key for the 128 - bit Wepsetting (second screen below). This WEP securityprotects your wireless LAN against eavesdroppingand unauthorized access by hackers or unexpectedintruders. If the WEP is in use, the WEP key isrequired for connecting to an access point orlistening to messages that pass through the air.

Encryption (WEP) - For more secure datatransmission, set the Use Wep to 128 - bitor 64 - bit to ensure wireless networksecurity. The advance Wired Equivalent Privacy(WEP) is implemented in this card to preventunauthorized access. The 128 - bit setting givesa higher level of security, but the setting mustbe the same as other clients in your wirelessnetwork. (Default: Disabled)

To use the WEP function, take the following steps:

1. Select 128 bit or 64 bit for the WEPfield.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Check the following troubleshooting items beforecontacting Technical Support.

PCI Compatibility

Some PCI computers are not self-configuring andrequire you to perform some or all of the followingfunctions by motherboard jumper changes and/orBIOS Setup program configuration:

Make sure your BIOS correctly supports the PCILocal Bus Specification v2.0 or later and upgradeyour computer BIOS to the latest version.

Verify that the PCI slot is an enabled bus-masterslot and not a slave PCI slot. In some computersthe PCI slot must be configured to enable busmastering. Refer to your PCs manual and checkthe PCI BIOS Setup program to be sure the PCIslot is an enabled bus-master slot.

In some computers, you may be required todisable Plug n Play (PnP) in the BIOS Setupprogram if resources are not properly assignedbetween installed cards.

Some computers may require you to reserveinterrupts and memory addresses for installed ISAcards to prevent PCI adapters from using the samesettings. Refer to your PCs manual and check thePCI BIOS Setup program configuration optionsfor ISA cards.

Make sure the PCI slot is configured to supportINTA.

Be sure that INTA for the slot is assigned to a freeinterrupt (IRQ) number.

If it still does not work, remove the wirelessadapter. Delete CW10.sys from c:\windows\system. Then go to Control Paneland delete the adapter from your networkconfiguration menu. Restart your PC and reinstallthe card as described on page 5.

NETWORK CONNECTION PROBLEMS

If the LED on the PCI adapter does not light, or ifyou cant access any network resources from thecomputer. Check the following:

Make sure the correct software driver isinstalled for your operating system. Ifnecessary, try reinstalling the driver.

Make sure the computer and other networkdevices are receiving power.

The access point you want to attach to may bedefective. Try using another SMC2652W accesspoint.

If you cannot access a Windows or NetWareservice on the network, check that you haveenabled and configured the service correctly. Ifyou cannot connect to a particular server, be surethat you have access rights and a valid ID andpassword.

If you cannot access the Internet, be sure you haveconfigured your system for TCP/IP.

If your wireless station cannot communicate with acomputer in the Ethernet LAN when configured forInfrastructure mode, check the following:

Make sure the SMC2652W access point whichthe station associated with is powered on.

Make sure your wireless station is configuredwith the same operating radio channel as theSMC2652W.

If you still cant connect, change the SMC2652Waccess point and all the stations within the BSS toanother radio channel.

Make sure the BSS ID is the same as theSMC2652W for a station with roaming disabled, orthe SS ID is the same as the SMC2652W for astation with roaming enabled.
