WE BROUGHT NEW THINGS:We helped lead Summer on the Green, a series of free art events that brought guest artists outside in-front of HOT ITALIAN for six weeks. We presented dance performances by Sacramento Ballet, SynRG and Celebration of Dance and the Legacy of Jere Curry.

WE FEATURED EXHIBITS AND MORE:The Tsao Gallery hosted shows Beneath the Surface featuring work by the California Society of Printmakers; the Wildlife Art Exhibit in association with Yolo Basin Foundation’s Duck Days; Woodcut Prints of the High Sierra featuring work by Tom Killion; the Elementary Art Exhibit; work by the Association of Clay and Glass Artists of California (ACGA) in Ceramics in Focus 2017 which also included a downtown annex show during the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Arts; the Gerald Wooliever Senior Juried Show and Arlynne Crandall High School Art Exhibit in May; august August our instructor show and the Davis Art Studio Tour Exhibit which also included an exhibit at the Hallmark Inn. We worked with UC Davis and featured student work in From Shoulder to Terminal as well as photographs by UCD student, Qilian Yu in Double Sided. We also worked with the City of Davis to bring the Street Smart Poster Show. To celebrate the 30th birthday of our home we hosted à la mode, a two month retrospective featuring contemporary work by artists that had shown during the 30-year history of the building. Whew! In addition to Tom Killion’s exhibit, we hosted Naming Mt. Thoreau, an event in which Gary Snyder read his poetry and Tom unveiled a new print that was included in the book Naming Mt. Thoreau (being published December 2017).

WE PUBLISHED:The Davis Arts Center’s Natural History Project book includes more than 700 artworks done by our community, has been compiled into a guide of 100 natural history items to celebrate the City of Davis’ Centennial! Ask our office for details!

WE RAISED MORE:The Big Day of Giving, a region-wide celebration of non-profits where supporters are able to donate and increase their contribution via matching funds and/or donating during prize challenges. Thank you to our donors, who took advantage of a generous matching donation from the Davis Arts Center’s Board of Directors to make this year our most successful. In addition to the financial benefits of Big Day of Giving, the program also provides non-profits with a series of valuable trainings to improve capacity building and networking.

WE OFFERED CLASSES AND PERFORMANCES:Thousands of you took classes and it was a busy year for performances! Acme Theatre Company performed The Jungle Book on our outdoor stage over Memorial Day Weekend. Our annual Classical Guitar Series included Matthew Fish, One Great City Duo and the ever popular Celebration of the 7-String. Meanwhile, our classes were humming along, both figuratively and literally, Doo Wop serenaded us and the Youth Theatre Company performed Zantaparon, Scrooge, Peter Pan and Beauty and the Beast. WE CELEBRATED:We celebrated the 30th birthday of our building. All year we were busy digging up information about the building, its history and those who made the building possible. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, we completed digitizing a list of our past board members – more than 775 of them! Our historical photo collection is now much better organized and we continue to collect your personal reflections about our home, and its influence on your lives. Thank you.

Thank you for making 2017 a momentous year. I will leave you with a recent anonymous story that makes my heart sing:

The old familiar space with which my children’s imagination free and wild sets my heart in chord with the beating of the life that ebbs and flows with students young and young at heart. There is more unbound, free thinking children as well as adults that have worn happy paths to some of the best experiences found in Davis. This building holds infinite memories as a patina on the walls and the memories circulate like dust motes floating on the air of childhood dreams. I love Davis Arts Center, may we ever cheer this space, place and building for the unforeseeable future.

As we look to our past, including 2017, we continue to discover long-lost historical gems that make the future even more exciting to ponder. I hope you enjoy this journey with us as our path soon leads to 2020, Davis Arts Center’s 60th anniversary.

Thank you,

Stacie FrerichsExecutive Director

Registration ProceduresYou may register for Davis Arts Center classes in the following ways:

1. Register in person at 1919 F Street.

2. Register online at davisartscenter.org/education

3. Mail a completed registration form (found on the back of this catalog) to Davis Arts Center, PO Box 4340, Davis CA 95617.

4. Fax the completed registration form with credit card information to (530) 756-3041.

5. Call (530) 756-4100 to register by telephone. We accept most credit cards, including Discover, MasterCard, Visa and American Express.

All registrations are considered confirmed when payment is received. You will not receive further confirmation. Therefore, it is your responsibility to record all personal registration information to ensure attendance on the correct date and time. You will be notified by phone or by email if a class for which you have registered is postponed or cancelled.

Registration Policies Late FeesDavis Arts Center fees are due in full at the time of registration. Students may not participate unless all fees have been paid. Instructors cannot be paid if fees are outstanding, so please be courteous to your instructor and to Arts Center staff by paying for classes at the start of each session. A $5 administration fee will be charged for each class registration received more than 7 days after the first day of the class.

CancellationsWe urge you to register at least 1 week before the beginning of a class session, since minimum enrollment must be met for classes to be held. When enrollment is below the minimum 5 days prior to the first day of class, there is a strong possibility that the class will be cancelled. We will make every effort to contact registered students in a timely manner if cancellation occurs. If a class is cancelled by the instructor registrants will receive a full refund.

Wait ListsOnce an instructor’s maximum enrollment is reached, names will be placed on a wait list and students will be notified if an opening occurs. Contact the Davis Arts Center office to be added to a wait list.

Refund PolicyAll refunds due to student withdrawal are subject to a $5.00 administration fee. Please be certain that you are able to attend before registering for a class. Registrations are considered final 14 business days before the first class, and no refunds will be given after this time. Davis Arts Center does not pro-rate fees. Exceptions to this policy may be granted only in cases of documented family or medical emergency (see front office staff). Materials fees (if any) will not be refunded and administration fees will apply.

Participation PoliciesDavis Arts Center is not responsible for unattended children on the premises. We do not assume responsibility if your child is dropped off early or picked up late. Please come into the building to confirm that your child gets to class. Davis Arts Center is responsible only for registered students. Parents are responsible for children brought onto the premises who are not registered in our classes.

ScholarshipsA limited number of scholarships for classes are available through the Davis Arts Center Scholarship Fund. Awards are based on demonstrated financial need. Residents of Davis and nearby areas are eligible. Applications are due at least three weeks before the start of the class desired.

Please note: Scholarships can be given to the same family only once per year.

InstructorsDavis Arts Center instructor biographies are available online at davisartscenter.org/education/instructors/. Davis Arts Center instructors are independent contractors and determine their own fees, class size, content and style of instruction. Interested in teaching a class? Submit your proposal online at davisartscenter.org/education/class-proposals/.
