is now underway

My name is Cale Bruckner, and I’m the Vice President of Concentric Sky. Our company creates apps and websites for companies and people on the move.

The internet. Mobile apps. Information at your fingertips. We live in a fast-paced world. Being in Eugene allows us to keep up, but still enjoy a great culture of creativity, innovation and inspiration. It’s the perfect place to call home while serving clients all over the world.

To help them create and maintain their presence, we need to be able to move quickly too.

That’s why we use the Eugene Airport. In a world that never stops moving, it fits my pace.

A history ofaccessibility

One of the City Council’s five goals for Eugene is “accessible and thriving culture and recreation”. With strong support of the community, Eugene’s Adaptive Recreation has been meeting that objective for more than 40 years; providing activities specifically designed for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.

Each year, more than 30,000 visits are recorded to adaptive activities, including social events, like the dance depicted on the cover; recreation opportunities such as hiking and the region’s premier adaptive skiing program; regional trips and excursions; and classes in arts, exercise, cooking, and many other topics. And we have a new program specifically for veterans. (See pages 56-65 for all listings.)

In addition, all Recreation activities are open to anyone, regardless of ability. Through our nationally recognized inclusion services, staff identify accommodations that allow nearly anyone to participate. That opens the door to recreation, social events, creative endeavors, skill learning, and fun!

I hope you’ll take a few moments to peruse this Recreation Guide and find an activity that you’ll find fun, rewarding, or entertaining for yourself or your whole family.

“Your call was unexpected,” the letter began. “It came when my son didn’t have a school any more, he lost his friends and felt alone and scared. Teen Court gave my son the opportunity to have a purpose and to figure out a way to turn his bad choice into a positive learning experience. It also gave me a positive direction to turn to and to know how to communicate with my teenager.”

Teen Court is “a program that doesn’t give up on kids, but shows them that a mistake doesn’t have to be something that defines the rest of their lives,” the parent said.

Teen Court gives young defendants an oppor-tunity to take responsibility and keep a clean juvenile record. Volunteers age 12-17 are wanted to be advocates, jury members and for other court roles. They gain experience in decision making, communication and law. For more information call Bruce at 541-682-6376.

Veteran Ree McSween had be-come isolated in her own home as a result of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and physical disabilities incurred more than 15 years ago. “I wanted to get my life back,” she said, and the Adaptive Recreation Program for Veterans opened that door. “Integrating back into my community at my own pace was such an asset because it got me back among the living.” Now, she enjoys river rafting and other out-door activities.

“I spent 15 years in conventional therapy,” McSween said, “and that helped in certain ways, but it wasn’t until I got back into con-tact with other veterans and we started doing things as a group that I started the healing that

allowed me to move past my own limitations. And it was through my fellow veterans that I received the most healing and the most recov-ery,” she said.

Swim lessons have changed! Following an analy-sis of several national programs, Aquatics has revamped the expectations and progressions of swim lessons to ensure water safety is the high-est priority. Strokes come second to being able to float, bob and tread water. Classes progress based on experiential learning, and are designed to gradually increase skill and proficiency as ap-propriate for each swimmer’s development.

Since retiring, John has been playing guitar. He is a part of the six man Hillbilly Band that plays in various nursing and retirement homes around town. Also, in Feb-ruary John will celebrate his 62nd wedding anniversary.

Classes turn photographer to painterSally McCoy is a retired photographer from California who has become an accomplished painter through the oil painting classes she took at Campbell Com-munity Center. Initially she came to learn how to

paint and now she maintains her own studio. Sally continues to attend Bob Niems’ painting classes because she says he creates a relaxing and laid back environment conducive to her creative flow.

Sally has been painting at Campbell Center for 10 years. She prefers to paint here because she says she would be too distracted by her loving partner and faithful dog if she were to paint at home. Camp-bell Center has nurtured her love for painting as well as provided her with inspiring company that shares her passion of painting. Most of all, Sally is “grateful to have a comfortable and tranquil place” to explore her artistic abilities.

Recreation offers painting classes in a variety of media, as well as many other visual arts.

Adaptive Program opens doors to funEleven-year-old Shanti had a wonderful summer. She took a water fitness class, a yoga class, learned how to row, played tennis, learned fencing, went

swimming and went biking – all through the Adap-tive Recreation Program. And her wheelchair never got in the way.

She and her mother Heather love to bike ride. They choose a recumbent tandem from a variety of adapted bikes for rent at Hilyard Center. Shanti says the $5/hour rental makes the bike affordable. “Bikes like that cost thousands of dollars,” she says.

Recreation programs are open to all abilities, and Shanti looks forward to participating in many more. She is especially excited about Adaptive Recreation’s recognition as a Paralympic Sport Club, which offers sports and physical activities specifically for youth and adults with physical and visual disabilities.
