DESCRIPTION OF COURSES NOT IN THE 2019-20 ACADEMIC REGISTER *Includes Revised Course Descriptions*

CLS-140 Greek Archaeology. Commito, A. For thousands of years, the Aegean has been home to dynamic societies

whose complex interactions with each other and with the broader region produced some of the most distinctive cultural

and political achievements of the ancient world. This course introduces students to the physical remains these societies

left behind. We study key concepts of Greek archaeology, including issues of chronology and ethics, as well as major

themes in the study of the ancient Greek world, such as religion and the emergence of the city-state. Special attention

is paid to new developments in archaeological research methods. We begin around 3000 BCE with the rise of the

region’s first complex civilizations, and end around 100 BCE with the transformations brought about by Alexander the

Great. Along the way, we explore how archaeological investigations reveal the distinctiveness of ancient Greece and

help us reconstruct the daily lives of people in antiquity.

ECE-371: High Resolution Radar. Pappu, C. An introduction to the concepts on the basic theory for design and analysis

of radar systems, radar system, range equation, signal design and signal models, signal processing, high resolution,

providing range and Doppler information. Prerequisites: ECE 241.

ECO-134 Data Visualization. Dvorak, T. The digital world we live in generates vast amounts of data. This data has

the potential to help us understand the world and make better decision. This course is about representing data using the

visual domain. We learn how to turn gigabytes of numbers into pictures, movies or, most often, interactive displays.

We will use the visual domain not only for communicating insights but also as means of analysis. We will learn about

data structures (how to connect to data), data aggregation (how to summarize data), and principles of design (how

humans consume visual content). We will apply these concepts to business and economic data, including sales,

financial performance, pricing, etc. The emphasis is on hands-on exercises and creation of new visualizations using

data visualization software Tableau.

ECO 212: Economic and Financial Forecasting. Karadas, E.The increasing complexity and the uncertainty of global

markets is fueling the demand for professional experts who possess an understanding of forecasting, statistical tools to

solve forecasting problems, and necessary computer skills to create relevant forecasts. This economic and business

forecasting class combines the essential tools in economics, statistics, and mathematics to meet these growing needs. In

particular, students will be taught the formal procedures of identifying and understanding characteristics of time series

and financial data, and the skills for developing and analyzing models for forecasting time series data. Furthermore, we

will discuss "real-world" applications for modeling and evaluating forecasts upon which decision-making would depend.

Substantial emphasis will also be placed on efficient and effective use of a programming language, R. Also, assignments

require the use of R. Prerequisite: ECO-101

ECO 235: Chinese Economy. Cheng, D. This course introduces students to the workings of Chinese economy. It is

about the transformation of China's economy into a market economy with its special characteristics. China has the largest

population in the world and plays an important role in the global economy. Since the Chinese government initiated

economic reform in 1978 from a planned economy toward a market-oriented economy, China has experienced rapid

institutional changes and achieved a spectacular economic growth of about 9.5 percent per year. It is therefore necessary

for every student concerned with the development of the world to understand the Chinese economy. In this course,

students will learn both historical-institutional and theoretical-quantitative approaches to study China's economy.

Students will develop a better understanding of Chinese historical background, economic growth, economic fluctuations,

and macroeconomic policies. Moreover, students will have a chance to study Chinese banking, financial markets, foreign

trade and investment. Prerequisite: ECO-101

ENS-215: Exploring Environmental Data. Stahl, M. Understanding how the Earth and environment works requires

the careful analysis and interpretation of scientific data. Increasingly, the limitations to our understanding lie not in the

Page 6: WINTER TERM 2020 PRESCHEDULING I - Union Collegeintended for majors, i.e., which represent the depth component of the major. Courses numbered 400-499 are all advanced level courses

availability of data, but rather in our ability to analyze and find meaning in it. Deriving insight from environmental

data, in particular large and complex datasets, requires new tools, methods, and ways of thinking. In this class we are

going to learn how to code in the programming language R and use it to analyze environmental data in order to better

understand the Earth’s systems. This course will feature a hands-on classroom with programming and data analysis

occurring interactively during the class. Students will learn how to analyze and visualize large datasets and how to

write code, while also covering interesting components of environmental and Earth sciences.

FLM-340: Suspense! Alfred Hitchcock and the Construction of the Thriller. de Seve, J . Students will

learn how to structure and produce suspense films in this fun, hands-on film production course. Weekly group

production exercises, readings, technical lectures and technical practice form the platform from which students

will investigate, analyze and reproduce the suspense techniques of director Alfred Hitchcock. While the

course concentrates on Hitchcock we will also look at other directors’ techniques to help pull Hitchcock into

critical focus.

FRN-405: Picturing the Beach. Bouhet, E. The beach is the end of a territory, the contour of a land where one can

stare at the horizon. In western cultures in the 21st century, the beach is usually synonymous with vacation, fun and

relaxation. Beaches attract masses of tourists and therefore imply a lucrative economy that many rely on. In this course,

we will study and deconstruct the multiple facets of the beach imagery in the francophone world from the 19th century

to the present, from Normandy to Haiti, from Belgium to Senegal, from Québec to the West Indies. The beach is not

only a physical space, it is a mental space that evokes desire, a sensorial space where humans experience the spectacle

of the elements. The beach is a point of contemplation. It is a point of departure for migrants, sometimes arrival. For

plastic, trash or dead animals, the beach is where they end and wash up. In this course, students will analyze different

representations of the beach in the collective imagination through visual works and films like Ma Loute (Dumont

2016), Vers le sud (Cantet 2005), L’Iceberg (Abel and Gordon 2005) among others. Texts like short stories, poems and

academic articles will complement discussions. The course will culminate with a creative project. Course conducted in

French. Prerequisite: 300 FRN course

HST-277/REL-277: Visions and Voodoo. Florez, J. Widespread religious change has happened in your lifetime, but

much of this transformation has occurred in the global South. To better understand the nature of this shift, this course

provides an introduction to the diversity of religious identities and practices that now constitute Latin America’s

religious geography. The growing popularity of Pentecostalism, creole possession traditions, charismatic Catholicism,

and renewed interest in indigenous forms of worship are only the most conspicuous dimensions of this change.

Together we will reconsider persistent stereotypes of the region as uniformly Catholic, while also examining the

myriad ways in which new religious groups negotiate and challenge social, cultural, and political norms. The main goal

of this course is to bring varied religious identities and practices into greater relief, while also considering the contexts

in which they emerged and how they are reshaping society.

LAT-243 Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Mueller, H. A reading of Ovid’s entire Metamorphoses in English, the translation of

sections from Latin into English, and the discussion of the work’s general relation to epic as well as to cultural,

linguistic, and interpretive issues raised by passages examined in detail.

MER-304: Contact, Friction and Lubrication. Lefever, J. This course will explore various topics related to

tribology: the study of surfaces in contact and the ensuing phenomena of friction, wear, adhesion and lubrication. The

physical and chemical origins of these phenomena as well as their engineering applications of will be discussed.

Special attention will be given to lubricating oil, particularly that used in car engines. The instructor welcomes input

from students with regards to the exact topics to be covered. Prerequisite: MER-213 or MER-214 or BME 311 or

ECE/CHEM-224, or permission of instructor.

REL-160 Introduction to Buddhism: Visions of Awakening. Staff. This introductory course explores Buddhist

understandings of the human condition and visions of human flourishing. We cover the major histories, doctrines and

Page 7: WINTER TERM 2020 PRESCHEDULING I - Union Collegeintended for majors, i.e., which represent the depth component of the major. Courses numbered 400-499 are all advanced level courses

practices of Buddhism, from the fifth century BCE to the present day, by engaging sacred texts from the Buddhist

canon as well as poetry, literature, autobiography and film. We consider how Buddhism has changed and evolved as it

spread from India, to Central and East Asia and, more recently, to the West. Key themes include the question of

suffering, the nature of compassion, training the emotions, and the place of the ordinary and imperfect within Buddhist

visions of enlightenment. Throughout the course, we consider the relevance of class material to our own views and

experiences of the world, and to the question of how we should live our lives.

REL-185: Science, Sex and Religion. Bedford, P. This is an introductory course in which we will examine how views

about the body, sexuality, and gender were influenced by religious doctrines, medical theories, and scientific practice in

Western Europe from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. We look at such questions as: the relationship between

sexuality and original sin; a woman’s role in sex, reproduction, and childbirth; and the treatment of sexually transmitted

diseases. We will likewise consider to what extent these historical debates and practices inform our own ideas and

arguments about sex and sexuality today.

SOC-208/BIO-060: Social Identities and Science. Danowski, B. & Hll-Butler, D. Is race genetically determined? Do

men and women have different brains? Is genetic ancestry testing a form of racial profiling? Should race, gender and

sexuality be considered during human clinical trials? What are the pros and cons of race-based medicine? This course

will focus on two related (reciprocal) questions: Do cultural understandings of race & gender influence how science is

done AND do scientific results and/or the interpretations of those results change our cultural understandings of race and

gender either to reinforce misconceptions or to erode them? In an interactive lecture format we will approach race and

gender as biosocial constructs, exploring their roles in debates about the relationship between biology and society,

nature & culture, and human similarity & difference. We will place these debates in their historical context, as we

examine how cultural understandings and misunderstandings of race, gender, and difference influenced and continue to

influence scientific inquiry. Next we will investigate how the sequencing of the human genome has shaped

contemporary scientific questions related to genetic diversity and evolutionary lineage. Simultaneously we will deepen

our understanding of cells, genetics, genomic diversity and DNA technologies during the lab portion of the course by

performing some of the techniques currently used to compare individuals’ genomes.
