  • WELCOMEGood evening NISO supporters,

Welcome to the first concert of 2018, entitled “Romancing the Violin.” We will enjoy classical meditations and pop medleys performed by NISO and guest artist Jessica Mathaes on the violin. We are sure to be inspired by the music this evening that focuses on the musical expression of love and romance.

Tonight we will conclude our Celebrity Conductor Contest. Please continue to vote for our four candidates through intermission, with one dollar equaling one vote. The person with the most votes is the winner of the contest and will conduct the orchestra after intermission. We will certainly be entertained by their performance. We appreciate your generosity. A big thank you goes to our contestants for their time and effort in raising money for our organization.

Please support Friends of NISO by buying truffles and coffee ($1 each) at intermission. There will be 30th anniversary CDs on sale in the lobby as well.

We are looking forward to another relaxing and exhilarating concert this evening. Enjoy the sights and sounds of this extraordinary concert!

    Best regards,Rhonda PenningsNISO Board Chairperson

  • CELEBRITY CONDUCTORS__________________NISO’s seventh Celebrity Conductor Contest is being held tonight in conjunction with the Winter Pops Concert, Romancing the Violin. Prominent local individuals have been invited to compete by soliciting support from family and friends. Each dollar donated to NISO will constitute one vote, with results tabulated during intermission. After intermission, all the candidates will be recognized and thanked for their willingness to support NISO in this fundraiser. The winner, with attire and baton of choice, will then have the distinct and well-earned privilege of conducting the orchestra in a special selection.

Leanne Bonnecroy – Orange CityLeanne Bonnecroy is the Director of Children’s Ministries at First Reformed Church in Orange City. Al-though she is not a native of Orange City, the beautiful town has indeed become her home with its Dutch festivals, endless theater/music opportunities, and strong faith-based community. Leanne was born and raised in Southern California, attended Dordt College, and went on to pursue her love of teaching. After 22 years of teaching God’s precious gifts, His children, Leanne felt called to give the children in her com-munity a safe ‘sanctuary’ after school, and now directs Kids’ Connection, which hosts over 200 children after school for a Bible story, snacks, crafts, and homework help. Jim, her husband of 29 years and her sons, Jack (28) and Sam (26), are Leanne’s first loves. Jim, a farm boy at heart, is employed at Animal Health International in Sioux Center. Jim and Leanne are owners of

Bon Croix Vineyards in Orange City and enjoy wine-making and hosting wine-tasting parties for family and friends who help with the grape harvest. Jack is employed at Vogel Paint in OC and is a cello player in NISO. Sam, also a cello player, is employed at Rapid City Regional Hospital and is currently finishing nursing school in Rapid City, South Dakota. The entire family loves and appreciates music, dance, and big bands. All participate in a church praise team, and in community theater productions. Leanne would be tickled pink to conduct the Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra! It’d be a dream come true!Help Leanne’s dream come true! Vote for her as Celebrity Conductor!

Sidney Bulthuis – Rock ValleySidney Bulthuis grew up in the Ice Cream Capital of the World in a family that surrounded itself with music. At LeMars Community High School, Sid actively played the violin in the Orchestra and Strolling Strings, and sang in the Choir and Show Choir. Upon graduation, Sid thought that he would some day be strolling through the halls of the Bulldogs again after a short stint as a NW Red Raider, but instead brought his high school sweetheart Christie (Veen) Bulthuis with him to Rock Valley. It is in these halls where you can find Christie as the Elementary Music Teacher and Sid on the other side of the building as the High School Math Teacher infatuated with the number π. Being in schools for his entire life, Sid still has never lost the love for a good ‘snow day’ and one could find him on any such day enjoying that white stuff with his three boys: Trygve, Miles, and Simon.

Give Sid something better than a snow day—your vote!

Nathan Frens – Sioux CenterAs he considers himself a wastrel and product of a misspent youth, if you asked Nathan if he’d managed to do anything right in his life, his answer would be quick and certain: giving his life to Jesus and his heart to his wife Jennifer. Outside of that, he likely wouldn’t be able to tell you why he was chosen for a contest such as this, other than the fact that his beautiful spouse was already occupied within the orches-tra and the Almighty’s schedule is rather booked at the moment. At least as the Plant Manager at the local Smithfield location, Nathan smells like bacon – so he’s got that going for him. When Nathan is not making bacon, he is often exasperating his children, Sean and Caitlin, with practical jokes or pondering a form of existentialism within the contexts of the polyphonic cacophony of his multiple superegos…or something like that. One thing Nathan does care deeply about is the universality of music, and is quick

to defend its necessity in light of shrinking importance when compared to speech, sports, and other school programs. He is endlessly proud and enamored of his wife and her many talents, which is why he is pleased to be able to support NISO – an organization that has given so much to her and to so many in the community. As Jennifer’s happiness is paramount to him, Nathan has pledged to match any donation made to NISO to his Celebrity Conductor campaign.Help Nathan honor his wife by voting for him!

John Vander Haag – SanbornJohn was raised in Sanborn Iowa where he and his wife Amy still live. They have two sons and two daughters plus one daughter-in-law who is married to their oldest son. John is President of Vander Haag’s Inc., which specializes in recycled truck parts, with six Midwest locations. John is a 1990 Gradu-ate of Dordt college with a B.A. in Business administration. John has been involved in various leadership roles in his church, school, and business associations. John’s last performance experience was playing trombone in the band at Western Christian High School, but he is confident that the experience of orches-trating his life and work the past 27 years will make him the perfect Celebrity Conductor this year. Help John move from recycling truck parts to conducting an orchestra!

CHRISTOPHER STANICHAR is the Principal Conductor of the Northwest Iowa Symphony, an ensemble of some of the finest musicians in

northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota. Stanichar was appointed to this position in 2011, following a number of guest appearances. Stanichar has continued NISO’s tradition of artistic excellence, innovative programming, and collaborations with guest artists from the region and beyond. Stanichar leads NISO in three concerts per season, in addition to the annual Concert for Children. He has been praised for “his obvious energy, great joy directing, and outright enthusiasm.” (Peter Wagner, Northwest Iowa Review).

In addition to his position with Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Stanichar conducts the Worthington Area Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota.

Stanichar has conducted professional orchestras in Europe, Russia, Mexico, and the United States, including the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra (Russia), Sochi Symphony Orchestra (Russia), Orquesta Sinfónico Juvenil del Estado de Veracruze (Mexico), and many orchestras in the United States.

Stanichar earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts in conducting at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he was a student of Gerard Samuel. In 1996 he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study conducting in Slovakia, where he appeared as a guest conductor of many top orchestras in that country. In 1997 he was appointed Conducting Assistant for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, where he was mentored by maestros Jesús López-Cobos and Erich Kunzel.

Stanichar is an active composer; his works have been commissioned and performed throughout the world. His Trisagion was used in the Ric Burns’ PBS documentary, Andy Warhol. More recent projects include a full-length cantata, St. Mark Passion, written as part of a Granskou grant for the 150th anniversary of Augustana College. His Variations on a Theme by Handel for string orchestra is featured in the independent film, Dust of War. TrevCo-Varner Music has published several of his works for English horn.

ANGELA HOLT began her music studies in East Texas as a pianist. She was awarded her BME degree from Wheaton College Conservatory of

Music in Illinois with an emphasis in music education and piano. Her MM and DMA degrees in conducting were received from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Ohio. Dr. Holt served as Associate Director of Bands in the Texas public school system and founded the jazz ensemble “The Dissonance.” She later was appointed as Director of Bands at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and as Music Director of the University of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. In recent years as Associate Director of Bands at the University of Cinicinnati-College Conservatory of Music, she taught music-related courses and served as Conductor and Music Director of the CCM Wind Ensemble and Commencement Bands. Her most recent research is of chamber wind literature, focusing on music of the twentieth century. She is interested in reviving music of the past and commissioning quality music for the future. Her passion is to encourage outreach through music and the arts on and beyond the stage. Dr. Holt was recognized in “Who’s Who Among American Teachers” and continues to be an advocate for music education in schools. Currently Dr. Holt serves as the Director of Bands and Instrumental Music Education at Northwestern College in Iowa.

THE NORTHWEST IOWA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA comprises the finest musicians in the tri-state area. Teaching principals are of a

professional caliber and function as first chair players and teachers in sectional rehearsals. The orchestra’s 80 members include adults of all ages as well as gifted music students from area high schools, middle schools, and colleges. Four of the middle school and high school students are recipients of scholarships from Friends of the Symphony for the purpose of continuing their private music instruction. NISO presents three concerts each season in addition to the annual Concert for Children, which is given each November for over 1,000 area 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students.
