The Opera Studio MelbourneWinter Newsletter

With great enthusiasm and abundant determination from a team of wonderful people, we have formed a partnership to present a regional festival - a series of chamber opera and events over the weekend October 9 - 11.

Our exceptional 2015 Young Artists will perform alongside extraordinary professional artists. We are especially delighted to have internationally renowned soprano Ms Cheryl Barker AO (A Very Very Very Short History of Opera, Diva Knows Best - Master Class)Max Gillies AM (The Judge in Trial byJury), and as Host-MC, Mr Bryan Dawe.

U.S. Stage Director-Designer Luke Landric Leonard will produce his award-winning production of David Lang’s The Difficutly of Crossing a Field, and Opera Australia director Julie Edwardson takes on Offenbach’s one act comedy ‘Guido’s Cat’. We are excited to be sharing the stage with guest performers Dimity Shepherd (The Difficutly of Crossing a Field), Sally-Anne Russell (Baroque-Breakfast -Thomas & Sally), Wendy Grose (Bon Appetit!) Adrian McEniery (Nonsense Songs, Stone Soup, Difficulty of Crossing a Field) Michael Lapina (La Triviata & V V V Short History) Former Gertrude Opera Young Artists Rhiannon Stevens, Eugene Raggio and Rada Tochalna also feature, and we shall introduce young Festival Young Artists, Patrick MacDevitt and Henry Shaw.

The NLOF program is designed to delight and enthral, impress and entertain. There is something for everyone - the excellence of the artists and productions, combined with the hospitality of our Festival venue partners, promises a weekend to remember. We hope you are able attend and make opera history with us - book online now: some events already close to selling out.

Joining a great tradition of international opera festivals, we have teamed up with Tahbilk, Mitchelton and Fowles Wineries in the ‘Heart of Victoria’ to present the inaugural NAGAMBIE LAKES OPERA FESTIVAL

Eating, loving, singing and digesting are, in truth, the four acts of the comic opera known as life, and they pass like bubbles of a bottle of champagne. Whoever lets them break without having enjoyed them is a complete fool....

May 29 - June 6 2015 Culture ProjectCurlew River (Britten)

Supported by the Andy Inc Foundation and the Myer Foundation, Benjamin Brit-ten’s Curlew River became a bold, oper-atic examination of a society’s reaction to grief, madness, and the validity of group redemption. To help the piece fit our singers (women) we re-voiced some of the parts, to tell a story for a 21st century audience, taking a quasi-sacrilegious

overtone. In partnership with Melbourne chamber ensemble Forest Collective, led by Evan Lawson, the young and guest artists formed a group of tourists who donned unflattering ‘uniform’ to take a journey across the river to worship and be changed at the grave of a young child taken from his mother. Peter Corrigan incorporated the musicians into the stage design, and they were visible in a sunken pit in the middle of a square white platform. The pillars of fortyfivedownstairs and a large white backdrop, as well as the white clothing of the ‘chosen’ travellers, were bathed in abstract projections created by Olaf Meyer and Greg Carroll.

Gertrude Opera’s 2015 Cutlure Project tackled issues of social exclusion, grief and madness, through a theatrical treatment of the church parable by Benjamin Britten.

“Gertrude Opera has branded the local operatic scene with another fine production”

“There is a sense of privilege in being there to witness such an intense performance”

French mezzo soprano Agathe de Courcy shone as the the ‘Madwoman’, and guest artists Belinda Prakhoff and Adrian McEniery brought their professional chops to bear on the manipulative and cynical treatment of a society looking for miracles. Our Young Artists rose to the challenge of performing a relatively complex score with no conductor, giving dramatic intensity through their collective commitment to opera-as-theatre.

Unsung Heroes:A big thank you to our Culture Project production partners:Dr Peter Corrigan, DesignerEvan Lawson & Forest CollectiveGreg Carroll, LightingAmelia Carroll, CostumesStaging RentalsMatthew NashOlaf Meyer, ProjectionsfortyfivedownstairsSarah HallLyz Turner-Clark, photography

“The combination of the vocals, the instrumentals, the story and the stagecraft, all to that amazing dark brooding music of Benjamin Britten was completely enthralling”

Determination & DedicationAs our Chairman likes to remind our incoming young artists each year, “it takes years to become an overnight sensation”. For our past performance program participants, it is not all that long since they left us, and they are already well and truly making their way in the operatic world.

In just eight years, our performance company has guided aspiring professional singers in many facets of opera performance, including mainstage and chamber opera productions, mini-festivals, masterclasses, repertoire advice, coaching, soirées, concerts, childrens’ opera performances and non-traditional events such as pop-up performances and promotional events.

As well as having opportunity to work intensively on stagecraft, performance techniques, rehearsal strategies and learning processes, in preparation for theunpredictable demands of life as a professional opera singer in the 21st century, our singers develop stamina,

learn to pace themselves and test personal capabilities. Based on professional conduct and stage etiquette expectations set through our performance program, our singers set standards of excellence for themselves, and for the artform. We are most proud of the everyday achievements of all our young artists; creative, production teams and peers consider it a privilege to share in the small daily triumphs and cumulative transformations of our artists, at all levels. It comes as no surprise, but we are nevertheless delighted, that the young artists mentioned left are fulfilling their potential, and making their mark with professional companies in Australia, touring Australia, and overseas.

Performance Round UpSince March 3, our talented Young Artists have performed in historic houses, an award-winning garden, a Town Hall, a blackbox theatre space, a Robyn Boyd designed Tower, a hotel foyer, a new auditorium and a supermarket carpark...

Thanks to the generosity of Kerry Gardner and Andrew Myer, our fundraiser for our 2015 Culture Project was held at CRANLANA, the historic home of Sydney Myer and his family. Beautifully maintained by Mariela and Manuel, we were given a warm welcome and a tour of the house and gardens. Just two weeks into the 2015 program, and with four international singers awating Visas, our Australian young artists had the pleasure of singing with Gertrude Opera guest artists, Belinda Prakhoff and Adrian McEniery. in a program of opera arias and ensembles accompanied by Irina Cherkasski. Max Gillies as special guest speaker was a real treat. Sincere thanks to Kerry, volunteers and in particular,

Caroline of The Little Grocer in Armadale for the delicious finger food; it was a truly memorable afternoon. Thanks also to those who attended and joined our Culture Project Donor Circle, which culminated in the accliamed production of Curlew River in May/June. Artistic projects rely on the generosity of many people, and we thank you all.

A regular feature of our program for the past five years has been the Young Artist-Friends’ Introductory Soiree at RAVENSWOOD, a meticulously restored Edwardian mansion in East Ivanhoe. Dr David Young put together a team of artisans to restore the ballroom to its old-world glory, and it s thrill for our singers to step out to sing in a room reminscent of stately homes of mid 19th century Europe. Thiere is always a wonderfully welcoming crowd of Board, Friends, family, and this year, we had the pleasure of some young people from the Les Twentyman Foundation Leadership Program, who had never heard opera live and up close before.

Cranlana and Ravenswood look set to be hot tickets again in 2016.

Page 5: Winter newsletter 2015

GARDEN SOIREESpeaking of hot tickets, there was not a seat to be had at our first sold-out open-air Soirée at a natural garden ampitheathre at TUGURIUM in Macedon. We all wished for, and got, a glorious, sunny, mild afternoon, and hosts Craig and Stephen, with the help of Erin and John and members of their family, put on a finger-food feast. It was a thoroughly enjoyable aftenroon. Some of Craig’s artwork and Stephen’s horticultural books were exhibited and sold, with 10% of proceeds being donated to The Opera Studio. We hope to return early in 2016.

MELBOURNE LAWYERS ORCHESTRA GALA CONCERTWe were invited by MLO conductor Robert Dora and Bottled Snail Productions to present an opera gala concert, and to use the tenor talent of young lawyer, Shaun Cartoon (pictured above with Michelle McCarthy). The concert was terrific: a rare opportunity for our singers to prepare and perform opera ensembles in concert with orchestra. Excellent playing by the musicians masquerading as lawyers, at the James Touli auditorium at MLC in Kew. It was delightful to have one of our major supporters, Mr Hans Henkell, in the audience. Thanks toBottled Snail Productions for including us this memorable concert.

DAME NELLIE MELBA AUCTION AT SOTHEBY’S

2015 Gertrude Johnson Fellow Michelle McCarthy and Festival Music Director David Kram performed a broad selection of Dame Nellie Melba’s repertoire on the occasion of the first ever auction of Melba’s personal property. Our namesake, Gertrude Johnson OBE, was a pupil of Melba’s for a short time, and in 1926 sang Musetta to Melba’s final London appearance as Mimi at the Old Vic Theatre. The auction opened to a full saleroom at the Grand Hyatt; 400 people registered to bid from all corners of the globe, with the sale result more than 300% above expectations. Who says a career in the arts doesn’t pay?!

PAUL CURRANOur first Guest Master Class for 2015 was with award winning director Paul Curran, who was in Australia (Brisbane) to direct Handel’s Faramondo, which ssubsequently scooped the pool of the Helpman awards. Paul had just one day off and jumped on a plane to come to work exclusively with our Young Artists - a 3 hour session turned into 5, and both participants and observers got a frist hand glimpse at what is required to work at an international level - Paul guests at The Met in NY, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Wexford, WNO - to name a few. His breadth of knowledge was staggering - historical and social coventions and contexts, language nuances, dramatic intentions, inspiration and traditions, as well as his own brilliant perspectives and instincts, helping our young singers take their aria performance to the next level.

Page 6: Winter newsletter 2015

TONY LEGGE

Tony Legge is known to ABC TV viweers as a Judge on Operatunity, and to singers around the world as the author of The Art of Auditioning. He is also Music Director of Opera Australia, and his annual workshops at The Opera Studio are entertaining and full of valuable advice for young singers about to embark on audition tours. There were two sessions - on aria repertoire, and on ensembles. Tony is a conductor and music director, with an extraordinary breadth of experience, and hears hundreds of young singers each year as an audition panelist.

HELEN NOONANHelen is a valued board member, and award-wining performer, and our singers enjoyed the opportunity to work on stagecraft, diction, intention and presentation. Some of our singers are to continue working with Helen in individual sessions to improve their aria presentations.

Helen has premiered many new Australian works, and aside from her brilliant performances in Chamber Made-Douglas Horton’s production of RECITAL (pic. below.) Helen also premiered our Festival guest composer Andrée Greenwell’s SWEET DEATH. and starred in MEDUSAHEAD which will screen at the Festival, and talk about opera, composition, performance and opera on film with Andrée at the NLOF on Saturday October 10 at 12noon. (Fowles Wine Shed)

Together with our Festival Venue Partners, we loudly celebrated the launch of our inaugural festival with performances by young and guest artists, and a speciallly-created Strathbogie Mist Celebration Cake by Chef Ricky Holt. Maestro Brian Castles-Onion (Conductor, Opera Australia) made the trip from Sydney, fresh from conducting Opera on the Harbour, to prepare and play for our Media Launches - in Melbourne in the gallery at fortyfivedownstairs, and in Nagambie, up in the tower at Mitchelton. (Pictured above: Alister Purbrick - Tahbilk, Andrew Ryan - Mitchelton, Ian Firth - Fowles)

A seasoned raconteur, historian and author, Brian spoke enthusiastically about the importance of connecting opera with regional Australia, and giving young aspiring artists the opportunity to perform in opera-as-theatre, alongside and with the guidance and expertise of professionals, on their way to a professional career. The Hon Fran Bailey gave a rousing and inspiring speech on the importance of the opera festival for the artists and for the Goulburn Valley region - the ‘Heart of Victoria’. Alister Purbrick, Bill Gillies and Robert Taylor also spoke to the significance of the enterprise, and added to the excitement surrounding the Festival as a long-term prospect.

Our singers enjoyed meeting the journalists and VIPs who attended, and it was also an opportunity for us to meet local politicians and community leaders, as well introduce our artists to our Winery partners: you can see from the picture below, US mezzo soprano Alissa Andraski & French mezzo soprano Agathe de Courcy chatting to Ian Firth from Fowles Wine, that terrific fun was had by all.

We look forward to long and fruitful partnerships - already planning for 2016!

CITY OF STONNINGTON

City of Stonnington put on their Glow Winter Arts Festival, and our Young Artists made three appearances singing popular arias for a crowd of people - some listening, some eating and drinking, and some ice-skating with penguins! It is a pleasure always to sing in a Festival environment - despite being outdoors on some of the coldest evenings of the year.

Congratulations to the City of Stonnington on a wonderful idea to get people out and into the streets in wintery old Melbourne! And thanks also to Peter Baker, for managing to play so brilliantly with cold fingers.

CITY OF YARRA

DAME NELLIE MELBA KINDERGARTEN 100TH BIRTHDAY

Stopping a room full of dinner guests with just one note, Alexandra Ioan and Michelle McCarthy took on a fun, chattering crowd at the Richmond Town Hall - a centenary celebration and fundraiser for the Dame Nellie Melba Kindergarten. They held their audience spellbound, and received rapturaous applause.

Left: A blurry snap from an adoring new fan in the audience.

EAST MELBOURNE ARTS FESTIVALRepresenting Gertrude Opera, Rada Tochalna (TOSM 2013-2014) and Eugene Raggio (TOSM 2014) with associate artist Emma Lippa, presented a program of opera on a beautiful winterSunday afternoon. Eugene and Rada performed the tragic final scene of Tchaikovksy’s Eugene Onegin, in Russian, along with arias and duets. Emma Lippa was a pianist with The Australian Ballet for many years; the audience were treated to the Pas de Deux from the Nutcracker, and Chopin’s Waltz in Cminor.

Rada Tochalna as First Lady and Eugene Raggio as Papageno, in Gertrude Opera’s The Magic Flute at The Athenaeum Theatre in November 2014.

DONATIONS to The Opera Studio Melbourne Fund are tax-deductible. Your contribution to the future of opera is necessary, and greatly appreciated - the financial and inkind support of donors, supporters & partners, the talent, drive and determination of young artists, the expertise and generosity of our creative and production teams, equals another season of quality opera-as-theatre.
