Winter is more than just an inconvenience. The bitter cold can create health and sanitation problems that can threaten overall productivity. A comprehensive farm management program which combines your expertise with premium solutions can help achieve performance goals throughout the year.

Did you know?Winter conditions can irritate the teat skin. Irritations range from mild chapping to severe frostbite and may decrease productivity by increasing the instances of mastitis. Though the use of a quality teat dip is important, keep in mind that it has to be part of a comprehensive management program which includes:

• Paying attention to the milking routine and adjusting take-offs before the onset of fall. Milking machine on-time with little or no milk flow is a primary cause of teat end rings and sore teat ends.

• Protecting cows from the wind and providing effective shelter with dry, clean bedding materials to help ensure cow comfort.

• Always dipping teats since omitting this step does not assure dry teats; even a thin milk film can lead to frostbite. When severe cold combines with strong winds, teats may get frostbitten even if they are dry.

• Paying attention to the wind chill index is a dairy manager’s best guide for preventing frostbite. Any time the wind chill ranges between 0°F and -25°F, frostbite is a possibility.

Udder Health Germicides and moisturizers are essential to help promote healthy teats and prevent mastitis, but in winter they become even more crucial. Cold temperatures do not kill bacteria that reside in the bedding. A cow lying in the stall will warm the floor to slightly below her body temperature which provides an ideal climate for pathogens.

To help keep your herd healthy and productive, select from the following teat dips which have been specially designed to condition the skin while delivering a germicidal efficacy of 99.999% or greater.

Calf HealthHerd health concerns extend to the youngest members. Calves are the most susceptible to harsh winter conditions. It is critical that a winter management program helps ensure they get the best start possible for optimum performance later in life. Whenever a calf is out of its thermal comfort zone it will have to spend more energy on controlling its body temperature as opposed to using this energy for growth.

A DeLaval calf coat is a simple way to assist calves with heat retention as the temperature drops. This helps to minimize their efforts to maintain the ideal body temperature.

Milk QualityMaintaining proper temperatures during the wash cycle can be challenging in a cold environment. DeLaval has the solution to help you clean your milking system and bulk tanks while potentially helping to save energy and money.

Reduced Temperature Detergent (RTD™)

RTD delivers unrivalled cleaning at a reduced temperature thanks to its exclusive dispersion technology. It offers the same results at 113°F as it would if the water temperature was 167°F.

Key benefits

• Effective in reduced temperatures

• Peace-of-mind in the winter months

• Ideal for cleaning cooling tanks
