HEADS UP

Giro Range £220Helmets that have size adjusters rely on the inner lining adjusting, the plastic shell nevermoves. With the Range (that’s the model name) the liner and the shell actually adjust. It’sa weird feeling; when adjusted it’s extremely comfortable and the helmet fits exceptionallywell. This Articulated Hard Shell construction is ground breaking technology on Giro’s top-of-the-range helmet, a model that is also loaded with features such as MIPS, magneticbuckle closure, integrated GoPro mount and X-Static anti-bacterial padding.

Oakley Goggles Prizm TechnologyPrizm technology in lenses was the big hit in goggles last year, helping the wearer to deal withflat light better and providing improved definition.

Prism lenses tackle the specific issues in snowsports where an all-white environment makescontrast and depth perception surprisingly difficult. A Prizm lens fine-tunes the light toemphasize colours where the eye is most sensitive to detail.

The result is maximum contrast and enhanced visibility of detail and contours, meaning saferriding and more confidence; and lenses that work in a bigger cross section of light conditions.

Now with five lens colours Oakley are set to sweep up the goggle market as snowsportsenthusiasts can get the performance they need in exactly the tint they want.

It’s still a personal choice but over the last few years helmet use has increasingly become a universally accepted part of skiing. We’ve nowreached the situation in many resorts where anybody not wearing a helmet stands out as kind of strange! A modern helmet is so light andcomfortable that it only takes a couple of runs before you forget you are wearing it and modern helmet styling perfectly sets off any ski outfit!

The latest helmet technology means comfort remains high on the agenda whilst safety is taken to the next level. Personalised fit systems areimportant and continue to be fine-tuned and in the case of the Giro Range revolutionised! The other key story revolves around increased safetytechnologies. Systems such as MIPS impact protection from Sweet and Smith, strengthening carbon fibre inserts from Sweet, Salomon’s eps4D shape for improved shock absorption and the durability of soft shell technology developed by Giro all strive to increase the margins of a skier’ssafety in a fall or high speed collision situation.

The X-Max is going to make many skiers very happy, it certainly didfor our testers.

Joint Runner-Up: K2 Pinnacle 95 £440 (ski only)Fun! An all-mountain ski that can handle speed and power without giving up its playful, lively side.Super-lightweight aero-grade materials are incorporated into the core, sitting alongside more traditionalwoods and metal. Brought out the inner-child amongst all the test team as the mountain became ahuge playground!

Joint Runner-Up: Volkl Kendo £420 (ski only)A re-worked classic that is about to gain legendary status. Rocker’s been added to the tail and increasedon the tip, the waist has grown a smidgen, more shape has been added and the profile changed. Theresult is better control, increased balance, and all the power and precision you expect from Volkl.Instant enjoyment when we skied this.

Women’s Ski-of-the-Year: Blizzard Black Pearl £385 (ski only)Second year running this ski has taken the honours. Competition was fierce but the ease and controlthe Black Pearl provides on all terrain (especially softer, choppy conditions) as well its ability to providepower and precision mean it’s still the ski to beat. Flipcore provides the perfect handling; traditionalconstruction and materials ensure the performance.

Women’s Runner-Up: Atomic Cloud Eleven XT £475 (includes binding)This was our favourite surprise on testing. It’s quick, precise and very responsive, short turns are adream. This is exactly what women’s performance skis should feel like. 2 huge thumbs up from all theteam, female and male.

Women’s Runner-Up: Volkl Kenja £420 (ski only)Just as the men raved about the Kendo the women were wowed by the Kenja. It has all the energy andprecision of previous models, but now it feels more refined without losing any performance. Effortlessin tricky off-piste, powerful on groomed snow.

BEST FOOT FORWARD

Tired of tight, hard-to-walk-in stiff plastic boots? Want to ski insomething more comfortable without losing performance? Then

say hello to Apex and forget what you think you know about skisboots and how they have to be made. That’s exactly what Denny

Hanson, the founder of Apex has done with these innovative and verycomfortable ski boots. Denny has some pedigree here as he is the man behindone of the iconic pieces of ski equipment from the 70s, when he did away with

the 4 clip boot to create Hanson, the veryfirst rear entry model.

Apex are soft boots, almost snowboard boots, that sit into a plastic frame which thenclips into the ski binding. This brings comfort aplenty: they’re easy to walk in just the

‘inner’ boots, they’re super comfortable, warm, and easy to get on. The foot is heldby the inner boot’s two-zone Boa system, so no clip pressure. The Apex Ski Boot

System is certainly different, definitely comfortable and surprisingly good to ski.


CUSTOM BOOT FITTING

Plastic boots have been around since the 1960s, slowly evolving into the ski boots we recognisetoday. However in recent seasons a fringe technology has quickly snowballed into a game changer inthe ski boot business.

Custom moulded ski boots with liners and shells that conform to the skier’s feet now make up themajority of the market. A few winters ago there were only a couple of models; last season custommoulded ski boots made up more than half the total sales. This coming season it is the essential skiboot technology, not just for experts or racers but for any skier wanting increased comfort and aperformance boost.

The boot fitter’s dark arts obviously still exist beyond the shop floor and thespecialist fitting of even a custom moulded boot is only truly bespoke inthe hands of an expert fitter, indeed only the addition of a custom madefootbed truly delivers a 360 degree custom fit.

But out-of-the box custom fitting is now taken to much higher levels withSalomon Custom Shell, Atomic Memory Fit and Fischer Vacuum fitting solutions.The whole process is faster, simpler and increasingly effective compared towhat’s gone before. All Ellis Brigham ski shops have accredited boot fitters whohave passed through our Surefit training courses.

Bespoke

SUREfit is both a way of fitting boots and a system of training. It’s a process that looks at askier’s individual foot shape and biomechanics, taking into account old and existing injuriesto help make the right boot choice. Surefit training also provides Ellis Brigham staff with theskills to ensure your perfect ski boot fit.

Next Generation Tour/Backcountry BootsSalomon and Atomic are set to shake up an area previously dominated byonly a few specialist brands.

Salomon Mtn Lab £500The Mtn Lab is more of a backcountry boot, a model aimed at skiers who willhike and tour to get the best descents and who don’t want to lose an ounceof downhill performance. An innovative cuff and walk function has created aboot that skis like the best alpine models, and yet has the range of motion likea true tour boot. For many skiers this may become their only boot, not justfor touring.

The most talked about category in snowsports right now is without doubt Backcountry. Across equipment, clothing and safety, much of theinnovation is based around everyone’s search for adventure away from ski resorts’ busy groomed runs.
