The Red Eddies still have eight players returning. Replacing 34 points per game lost to graduation will be a challenge, especially with a smaller lineup. EL has some good athletes, some perimeter shooting and a solid defense. That should keep it competitive with most clubs. with a balanced boys team and a young girls squad. Hersi and Ibrahim were among the top five in the mile and 2-mile last year, respectively, and Lavertu should be a factor in the distance events as well. Pandora and Gaghan were top junior throwers as sophomores,

although Gaghan probably won’t be back until the new year as he recovers from a shoulder injury suffered in football. About 3/4 of the girls roster consists of sophomores and freshmen, but Crowley expects them to be competitive during the regular season.Coach’s comment: “Last year at KVAC’s, the boys and girls both came in fourth place. Outlook: Last year, the EL girls snuck up on some people at the state meet and into third place overall. With the core of that group

returning, the Eddies will again have a team to watch, and may even have a chance to improve again on that finish. The boys will have a

scoring team for the first time in a while, too, and with Campbell back at the helm, the sky is the limit for this small but growing squad.Coach’s comment: “I really think we can surprise a lot of people with the girls we have this year. Outlook: Edward Little has evolved into the definition of a powerhouse, staying at the top of the KVAC and Eastern Class A with an ever-changing cast of characters. With no fewer than six recent Red Eddies now playing in Division II or III college hoop, EL remains the South division favorite and is weighed as a contender for its third straight regional title. The Leary brothers will provide scoring and rebounding. Mains is tireless, fearless and one of the premier point guards in the state. EL will need someone to step forward and replace Iman’s leadership and willingness to take the big shot in a close game.Coach’s comment: “We have some guys who might have played a lot already for other programs and haven’t had a chance to dress for us. Westbrook, a perennial Class A playoff contender, opened some eyes. Lewiston returns only one starter, Hyde, but he is expected to be one of the top players in the KVAC South. Farrar believes

the Devils will be able to develop the one or two outside shooters they’ve lacked in recent seasons. And one notable strength despite the recent struggles — quickness and the ability to run the floor from start to finish — remains intact. Wins in December would help the team’s confidence as well as its tournament hopes.Coach’s comment: ”There are going to be a bunch of us battling for those seventh and eighth playoff spots.” — Coach Tim Farrar

with a bang, heading to the finals in the sport’s first two official years. It’s not going to be easy if they want to make it three. A

large group of important players are missing from last year’s squad, including more than 75 percent of the goal production. But the Devils do have some consistency on the back end, with a pair of seasoned goalies and a handful of tried and true defenders. Playoffs are not out of the question.Coach’s comment: “A realistic goal for us this year is to improve as the year goes on and to be in a position in january to at least make a run at qualifying for postseason play.” — Coach Ron Dumont

unproven at this level. Pelletier’s squads typically work hard and play sound defense. If the offense comes around and the team gains some confidence, the Vikings should improve quickly. Coach’s comment: “With only one returning starter, this year will have its ups and downs. We will be very competitive night in and night out. The transformation of this team from the start to the end will be very exciting to watch. We have the ability to run and gun or slow it down. Davis, Day and Walker played with the Rebels as freshmen and sophomores. There will certainly be growing pains this season as the program gets started again, but with nine freshmen, there’s a nucleus to build from.Coach’s comment: “They are young and inexperienced, but they very energetic and are a great group of kids. Key losses: Jessica Mitaly, Dandra Drouin. Outlook: Mercer’s program has been growing the last couple of years, and about 75 athletes showed up for the start of the preseason to continue that trend. Gray-New Gloucester is loaded with underclassmen, and while the talent level isn’t particularly deep, Mercer is hopeful the Patriots will get stronger as the season unfolds and build the foundation for years to come. Peterson is the defending state champion in the 200-meter dash. Miklovich is the leading sprinter for the boys. Coach’s comment: “We’re trying to get the younger kids working hard so they’re ready to compete at the state

Outlook: If there was ever a way to carbon copy an entire team, the Falcons have managed to do it. One year after climbing back into the

state title discussion, the Falcons ought to again be there. Like its championship football team, MV hoop may go as far as its defense. The Falcons’ goal is to force 20 to 25 turnovers per game. out the last two basketball seasons, and Kidd, a Deering transfer who has never played organized basketball but has opened eyes in practice. The Raiders should be a factor in the crowded mid-pack of KVAC Class B.Coach’s comment: “With so many young players and players who have not played much varsity basketball, a lot of teaching still needs to take place. Good team speed up front, disciplined defense and strong goaltending will keep them in games. and a wealth of newcomers unaccustomed to the varsity level. Still, Morong sees great potential in this young squad and is excited about

the promise they’ve shown. The team is fast and athletic and willing to work hard. The Knights have some balance in terms of shooting and handling the ball, and can play at different paces. Emily Bolduc and Mehieux are expected to join veterans Seeley, Copp and Mocciola in the starting lineup, while Theriault is another young player that could play a significant role.Coach’s comment: “While we acknowledge the bumps in the road we will have with being so young and with all the changes surrounding our program, the most important change is in the girls’ mindset. We believe we can not only compete, but succeed at a level that would be a first for our program.” — Coach Andrew Morong

Promising newcomers: Juniors — Jed Quint (5-11 guard), Nathan Rybeck (6-0 forward), Ricky Bryant (6-0 guard); Sophomores — Tony Whalen (5-10 guard), Nate Morin (5-9 guard), Brian Bates (5-11 guard); Freshmen — T.J. Martin (5-10 guard), Josh Gary (6-3 forward).Outlook: Tracy, a former player at UMF and assistant coach at Livermore Falls, becomes the Knights’ third coach in four years. Defense has been his point of emphasis with a Poland team that is young in experience (Nichols and Farrington are the only returning starters) and age. Injuries have kept the Knights below full strength in the preseason. Poland will get to measure its progress quickly. Its first four WMC contests are against Yarmouth, Cape Elizabeth, York and Greely.Coach’s comment: “Some of the best teams in the state play in our league. Goaltending will be a definite strength and scoring goals

should not be an issue. The defensive corps is solid, and there is a lot of depth there as well. Size, strength, maturity, and speed are assets this team needs to utilize to be successful. Hebron should be extremely competitive.

Coach’s comment: “With 18 newcomers on the team this year, how quickly we make adjustments to the style of play and how quickly we can come together as a cohesive unit will determine how successful we can be. There is no shortage of talent at every position, so we

definitely have the depth to be a contender. We understand the importance of showing up to the rink every day with the desire to be better than we were the day before. I have a lot of confidence in our leadership. The new players have shown a lot of maturity and I believe they understand what it is going to take. Team chemistry will have to be our main ingredient if we are to be successful and accomplish the goals we have set forth for ourselves.” — Coach Matt Plante
