Celebrating35 Years

Customer Service: 703-787-730028Herndon Parks and Recreation Department

Congratulations Herndon on the35th Anniversary

of the Herndon Community Center!

Where were you in March of 1979? Going crazy as electronics conglomeratePhilips introduced the compact disc (CD!) to the world? Working out with yournew Sony Walkman or trying out a new edgy downhill sport known as snow-boarding?

That was all part of our world back then. Here in Herndon, we were preparingfor the opening of the Herndon Community Center (HCC). The HCC was dedi-cated on March 25, 1979 and began a dramatic change in the recreational op-portunities available to our small town. With a gym and activity rooms, residents and guests had a place right here in the neighborhood to work out, play sports, learn newskills, and indulge their passions.

2006 saw the completion of a fourth phase, which resulted in the 56,000-square-foot facility it is today. Plans for afifth phase call for a second story addition that would center all fitness activities upstairs and generate additional spacefor activities like yoga or active preschool and youth classes. This phase is anticipated in the next two to three years asdemand builds and funding becomes available.

Throughout the history of the center, HCC has been highly regarded for the quality of its programs, the friendliness ofthe staff and the community spirit that prevails in all of the programs and activities. However, our dedicated staff arethe most proud of the relationships built with our community of users: the young campers who have returned to becounselors; former teenage staff who now bring their own children to dance and swim lessons; the families who haveprogressed from preschool to Teen Discovery with multiple little ones, and the seniors who are actively participating inwater aerobics, balance conditioning and pickleball!

Things were a lot different in 1979 than they are now. Many of the faces in our Town have changed. And yet others arestill here, still working hard and still finding time to recreate and keep up their personal fitness habits. Even the personwho had the vision and the passion to advocate for this wonderful facility, and the high quality services it provides toanyone who visits, faithfully works out here. Many thanks to our Town Manager, Art Anselene, who was the first em-ployee and director of the Herndon Parks and Recreation Department and a passionate role model for all of us!

I want to thank each and every member of our parks and recreation team for their commitment to our patrons, andthe members of our town’s leadership, then and now, for acknowledging through their support, that a communityrecreation center is an asset to all of our citizens. Without the support and loyalty of the Herndon community, this facil-ity would not be the success it is. On behalf of the staff, I wish to express our appreciation to our patrons and neighborsthroughout the coming year with special activities and celebrations. Stay connected with us on Facebook (www.face-book.com/herndoncc) or visit Parks and Recreation on the town’s website (http://tinyurl.com/HerndonP-R) and watch forspecial announcements in the coming weeks!

For now, mark your calendar for Tuesday, the 25th of March, when we’ll have 35th Anniversary cake for everyone whocomes by. Special activities are planned throughout the day for adults and kids to enjoy a tantalizing taste of what theHCC offers.
