LETTER FROM THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT Restart. That's what the end of a year and the beginning of another signify for me; the gathering of friends and family, for holiday celebrations, declarations of thankfulness and the setting of new goals for an even better year to come.

Here at the chapter, I feel this same mantra applies when we host support groups for the newly diagnosed and those in their 20s and 30s, or wellness programs or legal days to have questions answered by our team of volunteer lawyers and even reconnecting with or making new friends at our Climb, Walk or Bike fundraising events.

Yes, restart...to remind us that everything we do can positively impact the lives of people living with MS; to remind us that the Society remains a driving force of MS research and treat-ment; and to remind us that we are united in our collective power to do something about MS now and end this disease forever.

Let’s restart…remembering that our vision is a world free of MS.

Sincerely,

Robin Einbinder President

MS ACH I E V E RSThis year, Tobi Rogowsky was hon-ored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented to volunteers with 30 years of service who have steadfastly given of themselves in the movement toward a world free of MS.

Honorees demonstrate commitment to the So-ciety through leadership, creativity or innovation.

Tobi was diagnosed with MS in 1973 and has been a steadfast volunteer since 1983 when she was recruited to be a part of the Society’s move-ment by Oscar and Marion Dystel. She served as chairwoman of the Southern New York board of trustees from 2007-2009 and currently serves as the Secretary of the chapter’s board. Tobi is a member of the board’s development committee, Women on the Move Luncheon and Dystel Memorial Golf Classic committees. Tobi was honored for her many years of leadership and commitment in 1999 when she was inducted into the Society’s Volunteer Hall of Fame for fundraising and at the chapter’s 2015 Women on the Move Luncheon. She is known throughout the chapter as a passionate fundraiser who does whatever it takes to engage, cultivate and attract new volunteers and donors to the MS move-ment. One of her stellar achievements in 2014 was securing a $1 million gift for the Society from a local family as a result of her cultivation.

Dr. Steve Kanter was honored as a Hall of Fame Healthcare Professional who has donated significant time and expertise to improving the quality of care, access to care and quality of life for people with MS.

Steve is the supervi-sor of physical therapy services at The Inter-national MS Management Practice and has offered his time in numerous ways over the years to both people living with MS and other healthcare professionals. He has worked tire-lessly to educate people living with MS and their families about the benefits of rehabili-tation and provided specific instruction and services for those living with new symptoms or increasing disability.

Steve’s enthusiasm for creating positive change in the healthcare/rehabilitation arena and quality of life for individuals living with MS is inspirational. He continually offers his practice as a mentorship site for those wishing to learn more about enhancing their skills and knowledge in the field of MS and is quick to say yes to professional presentation requests. He is the founder and leader of an MS Rehabilitation Network offering MS education, mentoring and resource and information sharing among rehabilitation specialists.

RESEARCH

NEW APPROACH TO REPAIRING MYELIN DAMAGED BY MSNew York University scientists have uncovered anew approach to stimulating the body’s ownresident stem cells to repair nerve-insulating myelin, which is damaged by MS.

The researchers, funded in part by the National MS Society, found that by blocking a molecule present in specific stem cells, they were able to stimulate myelin repair and some recovery in mice with an MS-like disease. In the process, they uncovered a new pathway for stimulating myelin repair and are now working to refine the approach to develop a therapy that may be used to repair myelin in people with MS in the future. The study was published online on September 30, 2015 in the journal Nature.

In MS, the myelin insulation that speeds trans-mission of signals by nerve fibers is damaged and the underlying nerve fibers are also destroyed. Some natural repair occurs in people with MS, but at some point this process fails to keep up with the damage. One strategy for restoring

nerve function and protecting nerve fibers from destruction is to find a way to stimulate this nat-ural myelin repair process, which is conducted by the body’s own replacement cells, or stem cells, that reside in reservoirs in the adult brain.

With funding from the National MS Society and others, Drs. James Salzer, Jayshree Samanta (a former Society postdoctoral fellow) and colleagues at New York University School of Medicine set out to uncover ways to stimulate the body’s own replacement cells, or stem cells, to repair myelin damaged by MS. In a series of studies, the investigators found an unexpected subtype of stem cells in the brain that become activated and transform into myelin-making oligodendrocytes in response to myelin damage. They also found that blocking or eliminating a molecule, called Gli1, which controls the genetic program of these stem cells, stimulated the cells to repair damaged myelin more effec-tively. When they chemically blocked Gli1 in mice with the MS-like disease EAE, they were able to stimulate these stem cells to repair my-elin, and the mice experienced some recovery of function. “These findings identify a new po-tential avenue for repairing myelin and restoring function in people with MS by mobilizing stem cells within the brain for repair,” said Dr. Salzer. “We are hopeful that further research and devel-opment may lead to new therapies based on these findings.”

The molecule the team used to block Gli1, called GANT61, would not likely be potent or specific enough to stimulate repair in people with MS.

However, the investigators are now working to develop additional therapy-grade molecules that may more specifically and more potently block Gli1, a necessary step toward developing this lead into a new therapeutic approach to restoring function in people with MS. The National MS Society through Fast Forward plans to support Dr. Salzer’s team to continue development of an enhanced Gli1blocker for myelin repair.

ADVOCACY

BECOME A DISTRICTACTIVIST LEADERThe New York City-Southern New York Chapter is looking for activists interested in serving as District Activist Leaders. District Activist Leaders will be essential in building a local presence and developing an effective grassroots movement, so that when legislation or policy issues are being discussed that impact the MS population, elected officials will turn to the National MS Society as a trusted source of info-rmation. If you are interested in participating in the District Activist Leader program or would like additional information on this important volunteer position, please call Gene Veigl, Director of Advocacy at 212-453-3238 or email [email protected]. This is a great way to move the Society’s legislative agenda forward.

WELLNESS

WELLNESS FOR THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRITWellness is a lifelong journey where people have the opportunity to develop an awareness of the choices they can make about behaviors, lifestyle and activities that may enable them to lead their best lives.

Wellness is personal, multidimensional and holistic. Wellness involves physical, emo-tional, social, intellectual, occupational andspiritual dimensions, with each existing along a continuum. Achieving wellness does not occur quickly or with a single behavior. Rather, it is ongoing, empowers people and involvestaking action and making life choices with the goal of attaining optimal well-being. The journey is unique for each individual and attainable for everyone within the context of his or her priorities and abilities.

The following is a list of ways the chapter encourages wellness:

Physical wellness can be addressed through adaptive exercise and blended activities includ-ing yoga, Pilates, aquatics, access to quality healthcare and sports, including horseback riding, tennis, bowling and golf.

Emotional wellness is an integral part of MS management and the strategies to achieve it can be a high priority. To address this we offer many professionally-led support groups and self-help groups that cover a variety of topics, counseling and peer support.

Social wellness comes from interacting with others, decreasing isolation and making con-nections such as networking with young adults, participating in community outings, online creative writing or joining an adult day program.

Intellectual wellness includes timely updates on current research and treatment options, information on symptom management, talking to someone en Español, addressing cognition and resources for the newly diagnosed.

Occupational wellness comes from involve-ment in meaningful productive work. It may relate to paid employment or exploring volun-teer activities. Our employment specialist can cover issues of disclosure, discrimination on the job, accommodations, career change, employ-ment resources and training programs.

Spiritual wellness may mean something different for everyone. Our caring staff is available to provide guidance in making difficult decisions, locating individually meaningful spiritual activities and is responsive to the needs of the MS community.
