Dear 49ers Kids Club Member, Winter 2013 On behalf of the San Francisco 49ers, we thank you for your participation this season in our Kids Club parties, fan events, and contests. Not only did many of you receive 49ers gear, prizes, and game tickets, but a handful of Gold members had the once in a lifetime opportunity to be a Kickoff Kid for a home 49ers game.

Some exclusive Kids Club events this year included Kids Club Day at Great America theme park over the summer, where members and their families received discounted admission and participated in an ice cream social with 49ers Gold Rush and me, Sourdough Sam! We also hosted a few events at the 49ers training facility, including a Gold members VIP Preseason Practice session and a Viewing Party for the 49ers vs. Rams game in December.

While new memberships for siblings and friends are currently on hold for the next few months, we will continue to host contests and off-season events for all current members, where you can win signed 49ers memorabilia and great 49ers prizes. Each month we distribute the Playbook e-newsletter directly to your parents’ email inboxes, so you can stay up to date with the happenings of your favorite football team even during the offseason! A new packet of Kids Club merchandise will be available this summer as part of the season-long Gold membership. The Gold membership will again feature benefits such as the ability to win tickets to each home game, the chance to be a Kickoff Kid and retrieve the tee on the field, and invitations to VIP Kids Club events. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for the 49ers Kids Club, we would love to hear from you! Please email us at [email protected] or call (408) 562-4949. Sincerely, Sourdough Sam 49ers Kids Club

INDIANAPOLIS – At pick No. 36 in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers found themselves a starting quarterback. Colin Kaepernick was the selection and it’s looking pretty smart these days. Kaepernick waited in the wings as a rookie and claimed the team’s starting job midway through the 2012 season. He made his 10th start at the Super Bowl and posted the best single-game rushing performance in NFL history in his first postseason start. How did all that happen? First, Kaepernick impressed at the 2011 Scouting Combine. The 6-foot-5, 233-pound passer ran a 4.53-second, 40-yard dash and posted 32.5 inches in the vertical jump and 115 inches in the broad jump. Moreover, Kaepernick wowed the 49ers coaching staff with his on-field and off the field behavior. ―I thought things we had seen on tape showed up on the workout, his competitive nature, for sure,‖ Jim Harbaugh said on Friday at the 2013 edition of the league’s annual job fair. ―He threw and did everything at the combine. His interview was outstanding. So, several things.‖ Kaepernick threw 10 touchdown passes in the 2012 regular season and four more in the postseason. He finished the postseason with a 100.9 quarterback rating, a solid improvement from his 81.3 passer rating in the regular season.

The production was quite impressive for a first-year starter, something not even the 49ers could have predicted in 2011. ―Well, it's a lot easier to sit up here after a young man's had success and say, yes, you pictured that,‖ General Manager Trent Baalke admitted at the combine. ―But there's a lot of unknowns when you draft anybody.‖

With Kaepernick, the 49ers felt like the young passer would be adaptable and hard-working throughout his NFL career. It made him that much more attractive two drafts ago. ―You look at skills sets, you look at the kid as an individual, you look at the intangibles that they bring to the table and you try to see if they fit,‖ Baalke continued. ―If they fit what you're looking for in that particular player, in that particular position. And he's a young man who brought an awful lot to the table as you know. ―He came from an offense that's not a, quote, pro-style offense. And just a guy who our coaching staff really believed in, that we believed in from a personnel standpoint and it was just letting him develop and giving him an opportunity.‖ Baalke credited the coaching staff, too. ―Coach Harbaugh has done an outstanding job with him as has (quarterbacks coach) Geep Chryst and (offensive coordinator) Greg Roman and he's still learning, still developing.‖ Kaepernick’s still working, too. Just a week after the Super Bowl, Kaepernick started working out at a gym in Atlanta where he trained for the NFL Combine. He’s also invited teammates to join in. Harbaugh’s not surprised to hear about the early offseason workouts. After all, work ethic was one of the reasons the 49ers coach chose Kaepernick to be his first ever offensive draft pick. ―I think it's one of his assets, one of the things that makes him who he is,‖ Harbaugh said. ―It's one of the things that's made him who he is. He's got great attitude. He has a great work ethic. ―People who have a great attitude and a great work ethic, there are very few circumstances or situations that can keep you from being good.‖ Kaepernick’s 2011 combine was good. His first 10 starts in the NFL were even better. Harbaugh’s favorite thing about coming to the combine is finding a player to ―champion.‖ He did that in 2011 with Kaepernick. Now, it’s all about who catches Harbaugh’s eye this time around. ―To me that’s the exciting thing, finding a guy to champion, a guy you can really learn all you can about and watch him go through the process,‖ Harbaugh said.

The 49ers have not only enjoyed tremendous on-field success during the 2012 season, but have scored major victories off the field through the San Francisco 49ers Foundation and Community Relations efforts. The San Francisco 49ers Foundation is the non-profit community funding extension of the San Francisco 49ers. Now in its 21st year, the 49ers Foundation supports development programs for underserved youth that keep them, ―Safe, On Track, and In School.‖ Since its inception, the Foundation has donated nearly $20 million to support non-profits, including $2.9 million in 2012, which is a 25 percent increase from 2011. This season, 100 percent of the team’s players participated in one or more community events, contributing 323.5 hours of service to the community. In addition, 49ers alumni, coaching staff, front office, and family members contributed 376.5 hours of service. Top participants and winners of the Community Relations Service Awards were LB Darius Fleming, who won the rookie player award, TE Delanie Walker, who won this season’s veteran player award, and Dennis Brown, who won the alumnus award. The 49ers community involvement served to touch many lives this season. Some of the primary beneficiaries include the San Francisco 49ers Academy in East Palo Alto - a middle school for underserved youth; Hedge Funds Care, promoting the eradication of child abuse; Center for Youth Wellness; City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley; Fresh Lifelines for Youth – a non-profit dedicated to breaking the cycle of violence, crime and incarceration of teens; Bayview Hunters Point YMCA; College Summit and Year Up! in cooperation with BlackRock’s Connectivity and Giving Event; and the Touchdowns for Kids Program. The 49ers Foundation efforts do not end when the season does, as events coming up in 2013 include, 49ers Winter Fest (March 21st —24th ), Hedge Funds Care (April 18th), Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance (July 21st ), Pasta Bowl (July), 49ers Academy Gala (Fall 2013) and BlackRock Connectivity (Fall 2013).
