Check out the latest event details at: www.hoosierbmw.com The Hoosier Chapter has joined forces with the Bluegrass Chapter to create a new high performance driving event for 2012. Our new dates are June 22 and 23 at Putnam Park Road Course. Putnam Park is near Cloverdale, exit 41 from I-70 west of Indianapolis. Maybe we should now call it the Rites O’ June, in that we are missing spring by a couple of days. The driving school’s mission is to teach advanced driving skills and habits in the controlled environment of a closed course. You’ll have an instructor with you in your car for the whole weekend. Who can attend? Students need to be 18 years or older, have a valid driver’s license and must be members of the BMW CCA or an immediate family member must be a member of the BMW CCA. What about the car? You will drive your own car. It needs to be in sound mechanical condition, with virtually new brakes. When you register, you’ll receive more detailed information about having your car inspected for free prior to the event. Driving a BMW is not a requirement, but for safety reasons, convertibles are not accepted. We have a tiered fee and first timer’s and early registration discount that can be found at www.motorsportreg.com. This covers two days of in-car and supporting classroom instruction. On- line registration allows you to fill out your registration and make convenient secure credit card payment in a few simple steps. You may optionally elect to pay directly by check. If you have trouble making the on-line enrollment work or just need questions answered, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] or (317) 738-2658 until 8PM. Registration is now open. Hoosier BMW Car Club Inc. P.O. Box 20775 Indianapolis, IN 46220-0775

the car to apply more power tothe road. This design, referred toas automatic torque biasing(ATB), causes the normally opendifferential to lock up, enabling the progressive transfer oftorque from the spinning wheel tothe loaded wheel.

There are two types of LSD units: Gear-typeand clutch-type. All gear-type LSDs work essentiallyby dividing the drive torque between the two axles, applying drive to each side, up to the available grip ofeach tire. The amount of drive torque one wheel canget over the other is described as the bias ratio, ameasure of the torque split across the axle.

Open differentials have a bias ratio of 1:1 and can onlyapply as much drive torque as there is available tractionat one wheel. When one wheel loses grip, the totalavailable drive is lost as well (at a 1:1 ratio) and powergoes out the slipping wheel.

Torque biasing differentials offer increased bias ratiosover open differentials. For example, if a diff has a biasratio of 2.5:1, then it can apply drive torque to thewheel with the most traction at 2.5 times the tractionlimit of the wheel with the least traction. This is a significant improvement over a open differential mostof the time.

such as the OS Giken Superlock, splits power to both wheels by utilizing friction between several plates in

a bath of oil that allows them toslip at low speed, low load —

and then grip as wheel speedschange during cornering and high

load situations. Clutch-type LSD’s seem to be gainingpreference among motorsports enthusiasts, providingbetter performance, though at a cost of higher maintenance. Some brands of clutch-type LSDs can be afflicted by rapid wear, noise and heat. OS Giken’sSuperlock uses up to 28 clutch plates and is the mostpractical of the clutch-style LSD available for BMW’s.

After making a decision to move to a limited slip differential, one final consideration has to do withgearing. Differentials use a set of gears known as Ring& Pinion (R&P) and are responsible for converting thepower from the drive train into useable torque. Alonger gear like the 2.79 used in pre-1985 325e modelsdelivered excellent gas mileage at the expense of performance. The E46 M3 used a 3.62 gear, deliveringmuch higher performance in a street car and whilestill keeping gas mileage within a reasonable range.Shorter gears like 3.91 & 4.10 are said to act as atorque multiplier, getting your car into the powerband quicker in each gear. Turner motorsport claimsan 8% increase in torque at the wheels with theshorter R&P, essentially launching your car out of corners when accelerating through the apex.

Several BMW Club members were treatedto a preview of the new movie, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, starring TomCruise, by Dreyer & Reinbold BMW. Both

D&R locations took over entire theaters onboth the north and south sides of Indianapolis for the

special showings the night of December 15, 2011.

Cruise reprised the role of super spy Ethan Hunt, and againsaved the world from seemingly inevitable destruction injust the nick of time, all the while looking very dapper indeed, tooling around in a prototype BMW Vision Concept Car. Ethan Hunt did take a bit of time to test theaerodynamic capabilities of a BMW X-5 Diesel by drivingone off the top of a building several hundred feet in the air.An X5, while a very good Sport Activity Vehicle, makes avery poor airplane. Please do not try this at home!

On November 4th, a dozen Hoosier members met at IMS

Headquarters where Mike Yates, Track Safety Operations Manager for IndyCar, gave a presentation on theHolmatro Safety Team (HST). On the IndyCar circuit, HST ischarged with safely extracting drivers from cars, and gettingcars off the track after an incident, as well as getting thetrack itself back into a safe race condition.

Detail is the watchword of HST’s planning. Each seat in a HSTvehicle is a designated position, with pre-planned duties andresponsibilities. Drills are rehearsed endlessly. Just gettingon a racetrack with 25-30 race cars under yellow, still travelingwell over 100 mph, requires perfect timing. This too is rehearsed, and as a result the HST often gets to a car before itcomes to a complete stop.

This year ended particularly hard with the multiple car accident in Las Vegas, which took the life of Dan Wheldon, but HST learns from every incident, and uses video, much likeany professional sports team, to examine and hone their procedures to provide the best service possible to keep IndyCar racing as safe as possible.

The 4th annual Hoosier BMW Chili Cook-off consisted of eightchili entries with 26 judges and was our toughest competition todate. Chili contestants really stepped up the level of competition.

Once again the centrifugal forces from Carmel’s round-abouts played a factor in the contest with at least twocontestants reporting spills due to the rotaries. In pastyears, winners also spilled their chili in the traffic circles. In 2011 a gentleman’s agreement was reached among the participants that the centrifugal forces were no longer to be used to further enhance the chili. With any competition, contestants will always seek an unfair advantage and 2012 was no different with potential victory overriding fair play and sportsmanship and the centrifugal forces once again being used for disreputablepurposes. A steering committee will be assembled to research the prospect of creating

a test to see if chilies have been exposed to centrifugal forces for flavor enhancement.

Karen Hyman won with her entry, continuing her tradition of chili excellence along with Don Andersen, also a past winner. The field wasdiverse with the standard chili recipes along with white chili, chicken, and number of unique ingredients. Rounding out the menu was a buffet of breads along with brownie treats, strawberries, and a strawberry cake. Euchre and other games were played with the rest ofthe attendees meeting new friends and catching up with old friends therest of the evening. Thanks again to those bringing chili and othertreats and to everyone for a great evening. See you next January at the5th chili cook-off.

For many BMW enthusiasts, ownership alone may provide asmuch satisfaction as they’ll ever want. But, if you are performance-mindedand want your BMW to be quicker orfaster than stock, your first inclinationmay be to increase the power output of the engine. However, if your goal is to be faster through corners, around bends and in a straight line, then an improvedsuspension and better traction is where you want to start.

Since many of us do not have access to unlimited funds,we must decide which path to take first. For sake of thisdiscussion, we will focus on how to get the most fromthe power you already have through better traction.Twin-turbo vehicles like the 335i produce a tremendousamount of power at the rear wheels, but in its current

configuration can make it difficult to efficiently transferthat torque onto the road. The root cause of the problem here is the differential.

After the E36 3 series, BMW stopped offering limitedslip differentials on standard models. Today, BMWscome with an “open” differential that distributes powerevenly to both drive wheels during normal drivingwhen there is no wheel spin. The problem with theopen differential on newer cars is that when a wheelslips, the onboard computer allows the differential toput through only the amount of torque it takes topower the wheel that is spinning, which is very little. In this situation both wheels lose nearly all power andno amount of torque would make a difference.

A Limited Slip Differential (LSD) will allow the insidewheel to spin only so much faster than the outside before transferring torque to the outer wheel which isunder load and therefore has more traction, enabling

The Hoosier Chapter Annual Meeting and Holiday Party was once again held at the beautiful Country Club of Indianapolis on December 17, 2011. After a few adult beverages to start the evening, the near sell-out crowd was treated to a buffet dinner, topped off by an excellent dessert table that tempted even the most disciplined dieters among the group.

Since this was also our annual meeting, the business portion of the night featured the official election of the new 2012 board of directors along with re-election of the current group of chapter

officers. After the voting formalities were out of the way, that amazing club tradition of drawing for the door prizes began. Thanks to the efforts of Tami Reamer along with help from Lori Dunlap, therewere holiday gifts aplenty. Both members and guests took home at least one of the door prizes.

A big Hoosier thank you to our door prize sponsors: Denny Brown, Attorney; Reggie’s Motorworks, The Tire Rack, Dreyer & Reinbold North and Dreyer & Reinbold South, as well as the National BMW CCA.
