Have you looked at www.winster.org lately? There were great updates on the bus

service when it snowed in December and a lost dog was reunited with its owner in

January. Daily weather forecasts, up-to-the-minute news about Winster, a Winster

Diary, and a mass of information are all there. Have a look sometime soon!

In particular, do please check the Winster Diary if you’re thinking of arranging a

meeting or an event – to avoid clashes and near-clashes (e.g. two concerts on

consecutive nights). Once you’ve chosen your date, email the details to

[email protected] and we’ll add it to the Diary so that others can avoid clashing

with you.

Buses to/from Sheffield are changing from 1st Feb. The Matlock-Darley Dale-Sheffield service will now usually require a change of bus at Chatsworth House (although timings are designed to make this fairly painless). On the positive side, there will be two buses an hour from Bakewell to Sheffield for most of the day. And the Devonshires will get a direct hourly service to Sainsburys in Matlock. Energy tip (source energy saving trust)

Electrical appliances, such as TVs, laptops, phone chargers, don’t use electricity

when they're plugged-in but not in use. FALSE: Some electrical appliances and chargers draw energy even when the devices

are not being used. This ‘vampire power’ wastes energy, and the best way to avoid

this is to remember to switch off at the wall and pull out the plug.

A few thank yous from the shop…

The shop had a very successful Christmas. I would like to say a big thank you to all our customers for supporting the shop over the festive period and to all of our staff for the hard work they put in. A big part of the shop’s Christmas success was down to the brilliant contributions made by our volunteers. Whether it was operating the till, stocking shelves, helping with deliveries, trips to the wholesalers or window displays, it all helped to make the shop attractive, well stocked and run smoothly. So, a big thank you to all of our valued volunteers and to Anthea for her continued support as volunteer co-ordinate. We would like to say a big thank you to Santa for visiting the shop in December. Over 60 very excited children came to see Santa and we hope to see him again next year. Over November and December the shop distributed shop surveys across Winster and Elton. The aim of this was to get a better understanding of what our customers think about the shop and how we could improve our products and services. The shop got 27 returns from Winster and 17 from Elton. We would like to thank everybody who took the time to complete and return the survey to us. The findings from the survey will be fed back through a future copy of the Village Mag.

Councillor’s Corner

Waste Collections Since Christmas there have been numerous problems surrounding waste collections in Winster. The Boxing Day snowfall meant that collections were suspended and crews have been struggling to catch-up ever since. Although many residents have continued to receive a good service, many were once again left with waste uncol-lected for many days. Where I have been made aware of missed collections I have done my best to get this sorted out and at the January Council meeting I challenged the Council Leader to take action over Serco's poor performance. If you are still hav-ing any problems with your waste collection, please contact me. Register to Vote With elections for Parish Council, District Council and Parliament due to be held in May 2015, Derbyshire Dales District Council is encouraging residents to make sure they are registered to vote. If you are not registered to vote, you can't have your say on who represents you locally or in Westminster. If you need to register to vote or want to check you are on the electoral roll, please get in touch with me. Councillors' Pay In February Councillors are due to be awarded a 2.2% increase in their allowances. I do not agree with a pay increase for Councillors at the present time, so I will forgo this pay increase. Colin Swindell District Councillor

Monterubbiano school, some with parent(s). The hosts will just need to provide

breakfasts and 3 evening meals. Activities and outings, some involving the children

from the school, are organised for most of the visit, which is from

Wed 1st – Tues 7th July.

If you are able to offer accommodation to any of the visitors, or if you would like any

Poems from School City Jungle

As the sun rises tortoise cars slink by

Their radiators absorb the pollution as their headlights lead the way.

Shops stare with their glass eyes. At the roadside, the animals look like a blur.

Houses splutter Drink cans crawl by;

Hands by their sides street lights leak with yellow venom.

As the sun goes down everything stays awake. Billy

City Noises

The bustling city. Babies weeping. Sirens wailing

Children screaming. Phones tingling. Fairground laughter

Thunderous music. Dogs woofing. Buses honking their horns

Motorbikes roaring. That’s why noise never stops in a city. Cerys

City Jungle

Snail cars slither by; leaving a hideous trail of pollution behind.

Horns constantly bleeping, Brakes endlessly shrieking sharply,

Tyres eternally skidding round bends.

Narrow headlights scan the filthy tarmac; glass eyes squeeze shut.

Flats camouflaged in graffiti - their windows shattered

A motorbike grunts; wheelie bins flinch

Litter tumbles around the streets. Like a gymnast in the Olympics

In the wild city, it’s every man for himself… Emma

Angela and Rob Greatorex would like to thank neighbours and friends of Winster for all the kind messages and gifts following the arrival of their son Ellis James on 10th January 2015.

Carol Singing

Unfortunately, the planned circuit of the village, before Christmas, did not take place,

due to inclement weather. So we went to the pub for a sing.

Between Christmas and New Year there was a very lively sing of seasonal songs at

the Bowling Green.

At both evenings we had a collection for the Ebola crisis appeal fund. Added to this

was money raised by Geoff Lester from another carol singing event, north of

Sheffield. The total from the three events was £141-02. This has been sent towards

the appeal. Phyllis Mason

The Darby & Joan club members would like to say a big thank you to David and Marilyn for our splendid Christmas lunch held on the 10th of December. Excellent service, delicious food and musical entertainment of good old songs and carols to sing to. Thank you so much from us all.

A Thought

As I think about Lent it brings two thoughts to mind - one the need for humility; two

the need to forgive others. Firstly humility; humility in the Christian context is not

about beating oneself up for being horrible and sinful, no it's about seeing oneself as

we are before God. So, yes I sin and I make mistakes and I hurt people (both inten-

tionally and unintentionally). But those are actions I carry out; they are not who I am.

So humility is looking into the mirror and seeing the real me and allowing myself to

be loved by God. And if I allow God to love me I become a wholly better human

being. St. Teresa of Avila said 'Pour in love where there is no love and eventually

you'll draw out love'. So Lent is about loving myself; allowing God to love me and

allowing other people to love me. There's an old saying if you're going out for re-

venge then dig two graves. For if we allow anger, hatred or rage to take hold in our

lives these things will destroy us. So, dear friends, in Lent let us all try to let go of

old ways of living; old paths of anger and resentment and let us look forward to new

life; lived fully in God’s light and love

With my sincere prayers and love.
