Winning Design Looks to the FutureSt Andrew’s College Memorial Chapel was extensively damaged in the earthquakes and sadly had to be decommissioned and taken down in 2013. Now a new Chapel will be built as the College moves into its second century. The new Chapel will be used for chapel services, celebrations, assemblies, presentations and special music events. Rector Christine Leighton says the new St Andrew’s College Chapel will be at the heart of the College community: a place of worship, memorial celebration, inspiration and gathering throughout our lives.

The new St Andrew’s College Chapel will be at the heart of the College community – a place of worship, celebration, inspiration and gathering throughout our lives.

The Chapel will embody the values, history, traditions and future aspirations of the College. It will commemorate the men and women whose lives were given in service, to community and to country.

A place of contemplative beauty, the Chapel and its garden will be a serene island that anchors the College community. A window to St Andrew’s College, the Chapel will welcome members of the College and extended community to a school founded on Truth, Excellence and Faith. While preserving all the important aspects of our past, our new Chapel will look to the future and provide inspiration and opportunity for those yet to come.

Our Vision

“While preserving all the important aspects of our past, our new Chapel will look to the future and provide inspiration and opportunity for those yet to come” says Rector Christine Leighton. A great deal of time, planning and expertise went into arranging an architectural competition to choose an architect to lead the rebuild. A design by Patrick Clifford from Architectus was chosen as the winning concept.

Christine describes Patrick’s design as inspirational. “It’s forward-looking while at the same time incorporating the memorial aspects of the present Chapel, including the memorial book, stained glass windows, oak doors, bell, communion table, baptismal font, ceremonial chairs, original stone, gargoyles and around 1000 of the original bricks.”

Patrick says that instead of the salvaged heritage items being scattered throughout the Chapel, they will be incorporated into a memorial wall along one side of the Chapel. The structure, which is about 30 metres long and four metres wide, has rooms designed into it and has been shaped to accommodate the baptismal font and Book of Remembrance.

Heritage items salvaged from the Memorial Chapel have been carefully integrated into the Centennial Chapel. The bell tower has been constructed in the same location and the original bell now hangs once again, ready to call students and staff to worship. The beloved gargoyles look out over the landscape from their perch on the memorial wall and the beautiful stained glass windows have been re-installed casting afternoon sun throughout the Chapel.

The amazing steel structure has attracted a lot of attention from architects and engineers. The complex geometry involved in the design of the impressive steel structure has required some clever engineering solutions. It is a unique example of church architecture. Ground improvement works have been completed on the site with 512 rammed aggregate piers installed in the ground using in excess of 1000 tonnes of aggregate.

When Past Meets Present

“So much heritage has been lost that we wanted to call on what was there before and incorporate items that would resonate with the community.”

The Chapel includes a balcony and foyer and has a maximum capacity of 700. Important issues such as acoustics, sightlines, audio-visual requirements, placement of the organ and grand piano, and considerations for musical and singing groups have been part of the wide consultation undertaken. The College will share the Centennial Chapel with the Village Presbyterian Church for their Sunday services. Community gatherings and special musical performances will also be held in the Chapel.

The College aims to raise $6 million towards the $10 million project with support from the St Andrew’s community. The Board will allocate $2.5 million out of capital reserves along with full insurance proceeds of $1.5 million. By August 2016 $3.4 million was raised from the community towards this special project.

“In the 1950s it was the generosity of Old Collegians, students and their families that helped build the Memorial Chapel,” says Christine. “Now it is our turn and our generation has the great opportunity to build a Chapel that meets the future needs of the College into the next 100 years.”
