What is a Twitter Chat?

A Twitter chat (also referred to as a Tweet chat) is real-time conversation conducted via tweets – each Twitter chat has its own hashtag which bands the conversation together.

There are Twitter chats on every subject you can imagine, from business, marketing, SEO and LinkedIn to fashion, mommy blogging, food service and fitness.

Twitter Chat Etiquette #Twittiquette

DO:

Use TweetDeck. Add a column for the Twitter chat’s hashtag and then follow along.

Keep it “light, bright and polite” - @JoshOchs

Use numbers when answering questions.

Use the hashtag.

Use pictures when applicable.

Favorite and retweet good answers!

Follow smart Twitter chatters.

Prepare tweets ahead of time if you know the topic.

Promote the chat on your social networks prior to the chat.#Winning at Twitter Chats — @KristiKellogg, Content Writer & Community Manager @BruceClayInc

Twitter Chat Etiquette #Twittiquette

DON’T:

Don’t retweet the question.

Be afraid to be funny!

Don’t engage with trolls.

Forget to say thank you to the host!

Write a novel. It should take ONE tweet to answer a question – two AT MOST. In which case, begin your tweet as follows: “(1/2) A1: This is my long answer …”

Hosting a Twitter Chat

BRAINSTORM

What assets do I want to promote?

Is this topic relevant to the users participating?

Are the questions at the appropriate level?

What actionable items can users walk away with after participating in this conversation?

Has this topic been covered recently?

What experts can I invite to participate in this conversation?

Be Prepared

Promote your Twitter Chat (with hashtag) at least a week in advance! Here’s an example of an image we used at Bruce Clay, Inc. to promote #SEOchat.

Be Prepared

Prepare your questions ahead of time.

Make sure the questions fit the allotted 140 characters, with the hashtag.

If possible, have more than one person manning your brand’s social account. One person, for example, can ask the questions and share thoughts while another person retweets, favorites, and responds to others’ answers. If that’s not possible … drink a bunch of coffee and make it happen. #NoExcuses

Show Time

If you can, include pictures. This will call attention to your question tweets, which sometimes get lost in the flurry of tweets coming through. You can use the same picture for each question tweet, in fact.

Turning Twitter Chats into Content #Evergreen

Any content marketing worth their weight in social shares will tell you that curating content is necessary. Get more mileage out of a Twitter chat by turning it into a blog post! You can make the blog post read like a transcript, or divide it by topics and just relay key takeaways.
