With “Wings Over The Smok-

ies®” a month away everything is

coming together for another excit-

ing rally in Cherokee. Both Pro-

gram Directors Robert & Donna

Ferguson (MEPC) and Susan

Huttman (RE)(LTP) are putting

their final touches on readying the

classes to be taught, Couples Selec-

tion and about a dozen other things.

As you are aware it takes a smooth

running team with everyone pulling

their own weight to put on a rally

the size of “Wings Over The Smok-

ies®”. In NC we have that TEAM.

From Don Harden, Vendor Coordi-

nator working feverishly to bring

you the best venue of vendors, to

Steve & Mary Craig, Webmasters

and Newsletter Editors keeping

everything up-to-date, to Tony &

Rita White getting the most sought

after goodies together, to Bev

Chapman, Treasurer keeping me up

-to-date on registrations and income

& expenses. You probably thought

I left out several others which I did-

n’t but my sentence was getting too

long. Roy & Cindy Bryant are out

there every day continuing to pro-

mote our rally among chapters far-

and wide along with talking to cou-

ples about the Couples Program.

Don’t forget Charles & Marion

Dudley, Marketing Directors get-

ting the word out using social me-

dia. While everyone is working on

“Wings Over The Smokies®” the

NC District still has to be looked

after and my three ADD’s – Bobby

& Susan Womack –East, Libby

Jennings – Central and Mike &

Lynn Humphries – West are hold-

ing down the fort along with taking

on additional responsibilities relat-

ed to our rally. Susan Harden is al-

most daily posting notices of those

that are sick and in need of our

prayers. Dorothy & I are taking a

cruise next week – just kidding!

What I find very rewarding is

the number of emails and phone

calls I have been receiving from

folks from Colorado, New York,

New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio,

Indiana, Mississippi and so many

other Districts wanting additional

information about “Wings Over

The Smokies®” with just a month

left to our rally.

I hope you are all as excited as I

am because we are going to have a

fabulous rally in July. If you have

not registered for “Wings Over The

Smokies®” you still have plenty of

time. You don’t want to miss out on

all the great riding, vendors and

camaraderie of your Gold Wing

friends.

See you at “Wings Over The

Smokies®” in Cherokee July 9-11,

2015.

We asked. You answered. We listened. We’re changing.

Do You Remember Your First?

Do you remember your first Wings

Over the Smokies? I remember ours.

It was our first year in chapter life and

we were not too familiar with anything

concerning Wings Over the Smokies.

It was the Luau theme and I bought

Bobby and I grass skirts to wear one

night. Not wanting to be out of charac-

ter I wore mine (over my clothes) the

assigned night. Bobby’s aunt and un-

cle went with us on the trip and my

migraines hit right before we left. We

had great time despite my head hurting

every night. We met a lot of very nice

people and learned a lot about GWR-

RA.

Over the years we have participated

by taking Rider Ed classes, MFA and

seminars. We attended one wedding

and participated and planned a second.

We have bought a lot of merchandise

and safety chrome from Wings Over

the Smokies vendors. Even when we

were working we had fun. Sue Hays

and I got on some people’s nerves but

you either go with the flow and have

fun or you don’t. Howdee!

I have always told my children

boredom is a state of mind. You make

things interesting and fun. People are

the fun in anything. Everything else is

just props. Come play, have some fun!

Laugh a little, hug a lot and make

some new friends. Enjoy the company

of old friends, buy some bling for you,

your wife or your motorcycle. Learn

something, work a little, put someone

in jail. I’m ready to go now!

This year will mark our 8th year at

Wings and we are just as excited as our

first. We have great expectations for

our second year in Cherokee. Bobby

and I rode the Parkway to Morganton

for the meeting at the Hillbilly Hoe-

down and it was a great ride! The rho-

dodendrons were blooming and the

weather was just right. We rode past

one place and there were about 10 deer

in the field. They were far off the

road so they were not a threat, just

beautiful. Of course I got to see the

beauty but Bobby had to pay attention

to the road.

So, do you remember your first? I

hope you are as excited as we are to be

able to attend Wings Over the Smokies

starting July 9-11. We look forward to

seeing you there “Smilin in the Smok-

ies” as Bobby would say. May you all

have a safe, happy fun filled trip!

First of all we would like to

thank everyone that came to the

Hillbilly Hoe Down. We had a

great weekend. It does our hearts

good to see folks having so

much fun. There were a lot of

chapters

represented from all over N.C.

and some from South Carolina.

Also thanks goes out to NC-Y

and NC-P2 for hosting such a

great event.

Lynn and I celebrated our

28th Anniversary on June 6th.

We spent the weekend in Chero-

kee NC. We had a wonderful

time riding, We went to a parade

and even went to see Merle Hag-

gard in concert.

Speaking of Cherokee, you

all know it's only 4 weeks until

Wings Over The Smokies. We

hope everyone is making plans

to attend. I know you wouldn't

want to miss out on such a fun

filled

weekend.

See you on the road,

We asked. You answered. We listened. We’re changing.

NC Assistant District Director - Central

Libby Jennings

The countdown has begun. Are

you ready for Wings Over the

Smokies 2015? In just a few weeks

we will be at the best, most fun,

motorcycle rally in the world. Yes,

I mean North Carolina’s Wings

Over the Smokies in Cherokee,

North Carolina, Back to Our Roots,

once again. I hope we have over

1,500 members/visitors at our rally

this year (let’s think BIG, right?). I

hope you have your registration in

because we will be having a GOOD

time again this year.

We are having the door prizes

and silent auction baskets coming

back this year, which will be fun.

Didn’t we have fun with the bas-

kets last year? I am sure you will

find lots of “ wants “ for your mo-

torcycles from the vendors, also.

Yippee! There will be something

for everyone. There are also rides

through the mountains; did some-

one say ice cream, sounds good to

me. Oh Yes, someone will be leav-

ing there with a motorcycle, trailer,

plus some other wonderful prizes.

Please check out what the MEPC /

Couples will be doing besides do-

ing their selection process. Yes,

there will be fun at Wings!!!!!!

Sorry but NO I will not be danc-

ing with the Indians during the en-

tertainment this year but come and

see what we have planned for you

to participate in. It is up to YOU to

help us have a grand rally. Be

there, volunteer to work, check out

the vendors, and come to have

some FUN, FUN, FUN and relaxa-

tion.

Be Safe in your Travels,

Libby Jennings

Central – Asst. District Director

It’s here, Wings Over The Smokies,

and again the Chapter Couples get to

meet other couples from across the

state. Some couples have not had the

opportunity to travel outside their area

nor were they able to attend the Cou-

ples Retreat. Our great State Rally

gives them fun time to share with other

couples they just haven’t met yet as

well as fun with couples they socialize

with frequently.

While we have a lot of “new”

Chapter Couples this year as well as

only a few months of holding the title

of Ambassador, we do have a few cou-

ples that have stepped up to the

“selection” process. We know any of

the 2015 Chapter Couples would make

a great District Couple and we are ex-

cited to watch them all grow in their

positions. We wish all the Chapter

Couples the best of luck. We want to

express this fact: there are no more

expectations on the District level of the

Couples’ Program than there is on the

Chapter level. As the District Couple,

you will continue to promote GWR-

RA, encourage participation at rallies

and other events as well as help at the

different events.

We are having MORE fun now be-

cause we enjoy being a part of all the

events, promoting GWRRA and the

Couples Program. Your recognition

level is a little higher and you can ex-

press to the current Chapter Couples

your fun experiences. We have trav-

eled quite a bit this year sharing our

fun at other chapter events. This is not

because we felt we had to. Why then?

RETIREMENT allowed us the oppor-

tunity to go. We have had the time to

accomplish goals in GWRRA that we

had set long before becoming North

Carolina District Couple. That does

not mean you have to be retired to be

the District Couple. It just means you

have a little more time for fun. Every

couple should always do what they can

within their limits and enjoy GWRRA

and life to its fullest.

Motorcycle Safety A to Z

This month, we are sharing an arti-

cle written by the NC-E Cary Chapter

Educator team of Carol and Tom Scul-

ly. Their long standing love of motor-

cycling coupled with their years of

experience as seminar presenters, PLP

facilitators and MFA instructors give

them a unique insight into riding

shared here:

You’ve heard us say in previous

gatherings and safety briefings, that

the rider must continually work to

manage and minimize the risks that all

riders face. This is a never-ending pro-

cess. Usually these presentations ad-

dress specific conditions: temperature

extremes, rain, heavy traffic, traveling

long distances, whatever. On every

ride, the rider can expect to be faced

with some problem that needs to be

handled correctly to arrive at the end

of the ride safe and sound.

We face many different hazards

pursuing our passion. So many, in fact,

I’m sure there’s at least one for every

letter of the alphabet. Take, for in-

stance, the letter “A.” Have you

checked the air pressure in the tires

lately? For “B”, we have may have

checked our brakes and our brake

lights, but are we aware of our blind

spots while traveling? How about the

letter “C?” We have recently talked

about construction zones, but are we

thinking about how we control our

bikes in various riding situations:

highways, mountain roads, city traffic?

We have talked about deer and dogs,

but have we tried a “D”elayed apex

turn lately to see if it is a maneuver we

want to use some of the time; do we

know how to do one? Without going

through the whole alphabet, we think

you get the idea. Managing the risk we

face must be all inclusive. If we get

even a little lazy and let things slide,

we give risk a greater opportunity to

do what it does best, get us hurt or

worse. Riding our bikes takes a con-

certed effort to keep us safe.

Like most of you, Tom and I love to

ride. We truly do. Knowing that we

have done everything we can do to

manage and minimize risk gives us the

confidence and peace of mind to truly

enjoy the experience. Sure, someday,

something unforeseen may pop up and

bite us. We can’t control the unfore-

seen. We can control the ‘A to Z’ of

safe riding and we need to be deter-

mined to do our best. We hope you will

too!

Couples Selection

Where has the time gone? We

are 1 month away from Wings and

we have been busy preparing for

the Couples Selection process.

We are pleased to announce that

there are 4 couples that have made

the choice to go through selection.

We are especially proud of

these 4 couples who are having so

much fun that they chose to step up

to try for a chance to continue the

fun at the District level. They are

proof that even though the Couples

program saw a small decline in the

last few years, it is now growing

and getting stronger.

All things begin at the chapter

level. Without the support of the

chapters and the members, the cou-

ples program would wither away

and die but thanks to your support,

that is not happening.

At one time, all NC chapters

had a couple and almost all the

couples went through selection. We

aren’t there yet but the couples pro-

gram is thriving and the NC cou-

ples program will be as strong as it

once was. We have faith in the NC

membership and their continued

support.

We are very proud of all our

couples. Out of 31 NC chapters, 22

of them honored a couple as their

Chapter Couple. This is additional

proof that the NC Couples program

is beginning to thrive once more.

In addition to being busy with Cou-

ples Selection, we have also been

busy arranging instructors for the

MEPC seminars that are being pre-

sented at Wings. This year we are

pleased to offer 5 MEPC seminars.

Seminars are a great way to

learn something new, get a refresh-

er on an old subject, or find out

what may have changed in a partic-

ular area. We encourage everyone

to take advantage of all the semi-

nars that you can. Especially if you

are trying to build a resume. The

more, the better.

We look forward to seeing eve-

ryone at Wings. Remember, this is

YOUR rally. Come to the moun-

tains and enjoy it! You’ll be glad

you did!

A BEAUTIFUL THING

“The beautiful thing about

learning is no one can take it away

from you” B.B. King

When the news broke about the

passing of music legend B. B.

King, I was reminded of his quote

about the value of learning. He

was right, whatever we learn stays

with us, influences us and serves us

every time we use what we have

learned.

The GWRRA Training Program

provides every member an oppor-

tunity to discover ways to positive-

ly impact both their personal and

chapter life. The seminars being

presented during Wings over the

Smokies® this year were chosen to

give those in an attendance a better

understanding of the value of adult

learning and how it can make a dif-

ference in the day to day interac-

tions we have with others, the tasks

and projects we take on and in the

way we feel about our capacity to

retain new information.

During your time at the NC Dis-

trict rally, support the presenters

volunteering their time and attend

at least one of this year’s GWRRA

training seminars. Your attendance

can be a chance for you to learn a

new way to communicate with

your fellow riders and co-riders.

Participating can result in a better

understanding of the benefits of

training and how it can have a posi-

tive effect on your chapter’s leader-

ship team and you could discover a

great tool to help you relate to oth-

er GWRRA members you meet at

gatherings and events.

These seminars are meant to be

a place to learn what we have in

common and to discover what we

have to offer others. Using the in-

formation presented coupled with

shared life experiences we can gain

insight and perspective both pow-

erful tools to enhance our lives and

relationships.

The training seminar schedule is

shown below. We invite you to

join us. If you have any questions

about the topics we will be cover-

ing and would like more infor-

mation, please contact your NC

District Trainer. The NC GWRRA

training team can come to your ar-

ea of the district to bring the semi-

nars and support you need to help

your chapter grow healthier and

stronger. Your email or phone call

is the first step. We look forward

to hearing from you.

TRADEGY CAN STRIKE IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE

The loss of a loved one or even a close friend is tragic and heartbreaking under the best of circumstances.

I’m writing this in the hope that it will save someone the additional grief when tragedy strikes. We all think

we have time on our side but unfortunately that is not always the case. We all know the dangers of riding a

motorcycle but once you take that first ride you’re hooked.

On June 6th our nephew and his wife were riding to a Shriners parade. They were on Hwy 19 in Maggie

Valley when a SUV pulled out of the Dollar General in front of them. They could not stop in time and hit the

SUV broadside. Our nephew died at the scene and his wife died on the way to the hospital. They leave be-

hind two teenage daughters.

I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about the accident as that is not the purpose of this article. My goal

is to remind everyone and try to convince folks to be sure they have their legal affairs in order. Unfortunately

these kids (mid 30’s and at my age that makes you a kid) did not. They did not have wills, living wills, power

of attorney, or any arrangements for the care of their children.

I know most us of that ride Gold Wings are a little older so I feel like most of us have taken the time to ad-

dress the legal aspects of our life. Maybe something has changed in your life and you need to update your

wills, even beneficiaries on insurance policies. Even if you have things spelled out take time to discuss your

desires with family member and if possible have everything pre-arranged.

If you have children that may be like this young couple, and especially if they have children of their own

please have this discussion with them. Beg them, drag them, do whatever it takes to get them to get these

things taken care of whether they ride a motorcycle or not. You cannot imagine how much of an extra burden

this puts on those left behind to deal with things. If they have minor children they need to spell out who they

want to take care of the children even on a temporary basis. They need to consider the age and health of those

folks. Please do not wait until tragedy strikes. I know this is not a pleasant subject to talk about but trust me,

it is much more unpleasant if the legalities are not in place.

Hello Wingers,

Everyone has touched on it in

there articles so I will too just in

case you missed it...lol. Wings

Over the Smokies® is right around

the corner...4 weeks as a matter of

fact. Get your registrations in if

you are planning to attend. We are

all going to be having FUN in the

sunny mountains of NC. If you still

have grand prize tickets, get them

sold. If you are having a gathering

this month, do as NC-Y and NC-P2

did at the Hoe Down...sell raffle

tickets for the grand prize tickets

like you would 50/50. For example

8 tickets for $5, 20 for $10, and 50

for $20. Whatever you take in, say

$150 that would be 15 grand prize

tickets you sold but they won. It is

a win/win situation.

There will be a Newsletter Edi-

tors class presented at Wings Over

the Smokies®. Richard Greer will

be presenting the class and I will be

there to give examples of newslet-

ters and to answer questions. I hope

all my Newsletter Editors can make

it as there will be some valuable

information given.

On the NC District website the

vendors are being added on fre-

quently. Don is sending me new

vendors to add almost daily. Also

the schedule of events for this

years Wings Over the Smokies® is

on the website so you can plan

your weekend. There are many

seminars being given by the Rider

Education Program, Leadership

Training Program, and Member

Enhancement Program. Everyday

is a learning experience and these

seminars are there for you. You

will never know everything and

you will never have all the an-

swers. When you do, they will just

change the questions.

We will have the silent auction

again as it was a huge success last

year. Also the ice cream social will

continue on Thursday night. We

will have Opening Ceremonies

Thursday instead of Friday. That is

just one of the many changes we

made this year. It makes more

sense to have it Thursday since the

rally starts Thursday.

If you get there and you have

questions, just find a District Staff

member and they will answer your

question. If they cannot, they will

get you an answer.

I hope you enjoy reading the

June issue of the District Newslet-

ter and in closing I leave you with

this thought:

If your actions inspire others to dream

more, learn more, do more and be-

come more, you are a leader.
