GAUDETE SUNDAY

Fr. Gerrys company was oneexperience of its kind. We comefrom different seminaries and backgrounds. Surprisingly we got

adjusted to each other in fewmonths duration. Fr. Gerryhappened to be an accountantgraduate before he entered theseminary. He has a love forsacramental ministry and wasup-to-date with his reflections forthe parish newsletter, Wings!He showed concern for the newlyrecruited altar servers and theSt. Vincent Ferrer Parochial Schoolaccounting system. He too graspedhow serious some parish problemsrun extensively.

Some people would call him strict but I found his disposition verycomplimentary to parish ministry. We shared our laughter andinteresting topics of conversationeither together or with the parishstaff. I missed his sound of laughtercatching his face and his stomach. Iremember when the mayor wanted

to invite the President for a town visit. If ever the president would visit the Church, Fr. Gerry would volunteer to meet him first andintroduced himself: ImFr. Arroyo.

Anyway, Fr. Gerry expressed hispreference to stay longer in theparish when he was only barely ayear with us. But the call of anotherassignment prevailed.

I was saddened when illness rightaway caught up with Fr. Gerry whenhe took some break to be ready forhis new assignment. I could perhapsshare some of his regrets. At timeswe are caught up with some lifespainful interventions we couldntknow why.

Time flies so fast that without knowing it Father Gerry who had been with us for overa year had to be transferred again to his new assignment.

Father Gerry, thank you so much for guiding the pupils, teachers and parents of St.Vincent Ferrer Parochial School. We are going to miss you and we are praying for yourearly recovery. Thank you for your kindness and concern regarding the welfare of ourschool.

Sometimes when we meet a priest, we expect him to be a perfect person who canmeet all our expectations. We forget that he is just a human being who commits toserve the Lord on his capacity, with strengths and weaknesses, who also needs sup-port and prayer for him to continue and be a worthy worker in the Lords vineyard. Fr.

Gerry is one of these priests who dedicates his life to serve and wants to bring peoplecloser to God.

Fr. Gerry has stayed in St. Vincent Parish for almost a year, and as I have known him,he is one of the priests who is committed and dedicate his time to serve the Lord.Some may have misinterpreted him as very strict but he sees to it that our services inthe church is not only for our own pleasure but for the Glory of God. I can rememberone parishioner after hearing his homily one Sunday, that she is really impressed withhow Fr. Gerry is giving his homily. Unknowingly, our lives have been touched byFr. Gerry through his sermons and homilies, which may have enlightened our mindsand hearts to know our selves and our relationship to God.

Amo ini ang estorya sa diin nagsugod ang pagdayaw kag debosyon saaton Mahal nga Iloy sang Guadalupe. The devotion to Our Lady ofGuadalupe dates back to the 16th century. According to tradition, theBlessed Mother appeared to a poor Indian named Juan Diego. JuanDiego, who was converted to Christianity only in his adulthood, was57-year-old widower when he witnessed the apparition of Mary. He lived

in a small town near Mexico City.It all happened on a Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, while hewas on his way to a nearby village. He was walking by a hill calledTepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. Aradiant cloud appeared and within it a young Native American maidendressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his ownlanguage and asked him to see the bishop of Mexico.

The Blessed Virgin wanted a church to be built in her honor. JuanDiego, in obedience to the beautiful woman, went to the bishopsresidence and told him what the Blessed Mother wanted him to say. Thebishop asked Juan Diego to return with a sign that it was indeed theBlessed Mother whom he had talked to. When the lady again appearedto Juan Diego, the lady asked him to gather Castilian roses flowersthat are uncommon in Tepeyac. Diego wrapped the flowers in his tilma

(peasant cloak). Then, he proceeded to the bishop. When Juan Diegoopened his tilma in the bishops presence, the roses fell to the groundand the bishop sank to his knees. On Juan Diegos tilma appeared animage of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. Themiraculous event happened on December 12, 1531.

Our Ladys appearance in Mexico is another testimony that she isindeed the mother of all humankind. She is able to communicate andextend her love and maternal care to all cultures and nations. Her lovefor us her children knows no bounds.

Our Lady of Guadalupe became a powerful spiritual force in the historyof Central and South America, for the image showed the compassion ofa loving God for the native peoples who fell before the forces of theSpaniards. Pope Benedict XIV designated a feast for Our Lady ofGuadalupe in 1754, placing the feast day on the same day as the lastapparition to Juan Diego. By that time the popularity of the image of OurLady of Guadalupe had grown tremendously and devotion to Mary hadspread widely throughout the Spanish colonial empire. Thus, BenedictXIV named Our Lady of Guadalupe as the patron saint of New Spain.

About 150 years later, in 1910, Our Lady of Guadalupe was named thepatron saint of all Latin America under the title the Queen of Mexico andthe Empress of the Americas. In 1999, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupewas designated all the countries of the Americans.

A significant element of this feast is that, long before clergy andtheologians thought about bringing the churchs traditional sacramentsand devotions into the cultures of peoples who were being evangelized,the appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe had encouraged the nativecultures and peoples of the Americas.
