The Yakima Valley AVA grows more than 45 wine grapes varieties. The success of this diversity can be attributed to the many different growing aspects within the AVA. The micro climates, heat variations, and different soil types within the three Yakima Valley sub AVAs — Rattlesnake Hills, Snipes Mountain & Red Mountain — play a major role in successfully growing so many grape varieties.

RATTLESNAKE HILLS AVA Rattlesnake Hills, located around the town of Zillah, is named after the Northern Pacific Rattlesnake that inhabits the area. Rattlesnake Hills is almost evenly split between red and white wine grapes, with reds having a slight edge. Riesling is a dominant white grape in this region producing wines with aromas and flavors of lime, lemon, and green apple. Other sites in the appellation offer flavors with a little more stone fruit, particularly peach.

SNIPES MOUNTAIN AVA The second smallest appellation in Washington at 4,145 acres, Snipes Mountain gets its name from Ben Snipes, a cattle rancher who built a house there in the 1850s. There are more than 700 acres planted in over 30 vinifera varieties, with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon the most planted. Fruit from this AVA offer unique aromas and flavors which have made it desirable for winemakers to identify it as a Snipes Mountain-designated wine.

RED MOUNTAIN AVA The Red Mountain AVA is located on the far eastern side of the Yakima Valley. It is the smallest appellation in Washington state — just 4,040 acres of the Yakima Valley Valley’s 17,000 total vineyard acres. Cheatgrass, a plant that grows naturally in the region, turns bright red in early spring giving Red Mountain its name. The nearby Yakima River moderates temperatures and provides continual airflow, guarding against frost.

OFFBEAT WHITES You may not know them, but you should!

The days of walking through the white wine section of your local grocery store or wine shop and choosing between two flavors — Chardonnay and Riesling — are gone. Wine diversity in the U.S. is at an all-time high, and Yakima Valley winemakers are doing their part by crafting a full spectrum of lesser known wines.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of drinking wine is expanding your knowledge and developing your palate. Visiting wine country makes it easy to do both. The ever-growing list of wine grape varieties coming out of the Yakima Valley allows access to wines that, due to low production, many outside the region will never have the opportunity to enjoy.

The wine varietals highlighted here are gaining popularity with consumers and wine professionals alike, and all are produced in the Yakima Valley. Sampling offbeat wines such as these helps build your tasting palate and allows you to experiment with wines produced from these up-and-coming grape varieties.

A FEW OFFBEAT WINES TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO:

Grenache Blanc (pronounced “greh-nash blonk”) is a white wine mostly found in Rhône wine blends. Its versatility allows winemakers to produce dry, off-dry, sparkling, and even oak-aged styles similar to Chardonnay. Grenache Blanc is a medium bodied wine with a lot of citrus. It’s a nice sipping wine, but it will also pair well with food that has a bit of spice, but be careful not to over-do the spice.

Albariño (pronounced “ahl vah REE nyoh”) is a white grape grown predominantly in northwest Spain and Portugal. This grape produces an aromatic and bright full-bodied wine. This wine can be enjoyed on its own or paired with seafood and will steal the show at any gathering, just as it has when shared with wine professionals and media. Buy now—this wine sells out!

Picpoul (pronounced “pick-pool”) is a light-skinned, full-body white wine that is gaining popularity as a trendy upstart. Translated, Picpoul means “lip stinger,” named for its bold and zingy acidity (brightness). It’s not easy to find, but it is definitely a fun wine to seek out. Look for this wine on tasting lists as you visit the wineries. This is a fun, upbeat, and very dry wine. It would be impeccable with fresh oysters and shellfish.

Chenin Blanc (pronounced “shen-nin blonk”) is produced in boutique quantities. These wines are round and fruit-forward, often aged in oak. Its f loral overtones are reined in by the variety’s inherent brightness.

If you are interested in exploring the white wines of the region, look for wineries who produce these wines and enjoy!

SINGULAR VINYARDS, SINGULAR WINES

It is often said that wine is made in the vineyard. Grapes are the raw material that determines the final quality of a wine. Wine grapes are significantly influenced by climate, topography, and soil which are often expressed by a wine region.

We know of many great wine regions throughout the world. Getting beyond the basic wine growing area and into the f iner details of a specif ic vineyard can make a remarkable impact on the f inal wine. The best vineyards grow the best wine. In the Yakima Valley those vineyards are typically on a south facing hillside with very rocky soil and little water.

"Single vineyard," also referred to as "vineyard designate," is a term used in the wine industry to indicate that the wine in the bottle comes from a single vineyard site. U.S. law dictates that at least 95 percent of the grapes used to make a single vineyard wine must come from that site.

Vineyard designate wines are the best expressions of the vineyard and typically the highest quality wine from the winemaker. The fruit is grown in elements best suited to

the grape variety, and is often farmed separately receiving additional care during the growing season.

All of these elements are in balance and harmony for growing high-quality grapes. By using the best grapes from one vineyard, the vineyard characteristics are allowed toshine through giving the wine another exclusive aspect. The Yakima Valley AVA is home to the highest number of acclaimed vineyards than any AVA in Washington.

In Washington state, winemakers don’t have to own vineyards to make delicious wine. By relying on trusted growers, vintners procure grapes to craft pours that are uniquely theirs. If you travel through a Yakima Valley vineyard, you are likely to see markers with the name of the winery receiving grapes from the identif ied vineyard row. This helps create consistency in the wine year after year.

Vineyard designate wines are most often the best of both the vineyard and winery, showcasing true characteristics of a single varietal wine.

Yakima Valley vineyards are named on many outstanding wines. When you visit local wineries, or look through the shelves at your local wine shop, keep an eye out for vineyard designate wines, a sure sign of quality.

RHÔNESTYLERhône on the Rise in the Yakima Valley

One of the best wine regions in France, along with Bordeaux and Burgundy, is the Rhône Valley. It is a large, warm grape growing area known by oenophiles for its exceptional wines. Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre are the most common reds from the region, in addition to GSM, a blend of the three.

During the 1990s, Syrah, one of the most notable Rhône varietals, fell out of favor with consumers. Vineyards in California had been over-planted, f looding the market with bargain priced grapes. The over-production and questionable quality caused everyone to pull back. The wine was diff icult to sell.

In Washington, most specif ically Yakima Valley, Syrah was just getting started. Yakima’s Mike Sauer planted the state’s f irst Syrah at his Red Willow Vineyard in 1986. The grapes went into Columbia Winery’s 1988 vintage: Washington’s f irst commercial Syrah. The wine received critical acclaim, even from French Rhône producers. The quality was clearly in the bottle.

Meanwhile, in the Yakima Valley, Joe Hattrup, owner of Elephant Mountain Vineyard was planting test plots with various grape varieties to determine what would grow well on his steep, rocky site. He discovered that Rhône-style grape varieties were well suited to the heat of his high-elevation vineyard.

The fruit from Elephant Mountain is exceptional. Its quality has created demand from vintners all over the state. Winemakers purchasing grapes from the vineyard encouraged him to plant more Rhône varieties; “They saw the opportunity for a new style of wine in Washington

state,” said Hattrup.“Winemakers drove the interest. It’s something new and

a good way for wineries to expand their portfolio,” Hattrup explained, adding, “There is plenty of Syrah available; by adding Grenache and Mourvèdre, winemakers can make a nice GSM. It’s a style that discerning wine consumers might be familiar with.”

Today, many of the Rhône-style wines are interesting, desirable, and marketable. Much of Washington’s success with these up-and-coming wines can be attributed to the quality of the grapes grown here.

Once considered diff icult to sell, the demand for Syrah and other Rhône-style varieties continue to rise. In 2016, Syrah was the third top producer among red wine grapes in Washington State with a harvest of more than 21,000 tons. Much of that goes into single varietal Syrah, but more and more is becoming part of Washington’s growing Rhône-style wine scene, notably blends such as GSM.

Although the focus has been on reds, the white Rhône wines are creating just as much excitement. Viognier is probably the best known of the white varietals in Washington, others include Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Picpoul.

Rhône-style wines are excellent for summer. The whites are great to savor during the heat, and the reds are a perfect wine for anything barbecued.Grenache is light in color with flavors of red fruit,

raspberry, black cherry, strawberry with spice, citrus (grapefruit), and tobacco. Although Grenache is light in color it adds high alcohol levels to the blend giving GSM wines a long tingly finish.

Syrah is a big, dark jammy wine with fruit flavors of blackberry and plum. Some taste a savory flavor along with tobacco and a lot of spicy peppery notes. Syrah is responsible for some of the darkest full-bodied red wines in the world. Popular in a blend or alone, look for this popular wine while visiting Yakima Valley wineries.

Mourvèdre is a rich dark wine, similar to Syrah, with a more lingering finish. Its strong tannins add structure and floral aromas to the blend. Flavors include blackberry, plum, smoke and pepper. This up-and-coming wine is delicious as a single varietal wine. If you enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon, you will like Mourvèdre.

Viognier is a full-bodied white wine that originated in southern France. Loved for its perfumed aromas of peach, tangerine and honeysuckle, Viognier can also be oak-aged to add a rich creamy taste with hints of vanilla. If you love bolder white wines like Chardonnay, Viognier is definitely something you’ll like to swirl.

The Yakima Valley AVA was formed by a series of cataclysmic events that began 15 million years ago.

Volcanoes created lava, ash, and volcanic sediment while ice age glaciers and f loods brought pebbles, stones, granite, and quartzite to the region. The earthquakes compressed and wrinkled the land creating ridges running east-west. In the terms of wine quality, these historic occurrences translate into soils that allow grapes and wines to be completely true to their varietal character, or typicity.

TYPICITY: The degree to which a wine reflects its varietal origins and thus demonstrates the signature characteristics of the grape from which it was produced. Typicity is the standard of the varietal.

Following are three popular wine varietals grown in Washington, and the standard tasting profile of each:

Cabernet Sauvignon When choosing a Northwest Cabernet Sauvignon, expect a fruity character from this complex grape. In its youth, the wine appears subtle and restrained. This wine ages beautifully, its character can emerge as black currants, cherry, berry, chocolate, leather, mint, herbs, bell pepper or any combination of these.

Syrah The f irst Syrah grapes in Washington were planted in the Yakima Valley in 1986. Syrah is one of the Rhône varieties sparking great interest in the Valley. A spicy, rich, complex varietal, Syrah grapes turn into big, dark, intensely-concentrated wines with aromas and f lavors of blackberries, black currants, roasted coffee and leather.

Merlot Plantings of Merlot in the Yakima Valley date back to 1972 when the wine became popular as a single varietal. Merlot is often used as a blending grape as it adds softness, depth, and complexity to the wine. It tends to be full -bodied with complex cherry aromas and f lavors of red fruit, mint and spices such as nutmeg or cardamom. It has moderate tannins and slightly higher acidity than those from California.

Family owned and operated, Terra Blanca began as the vision of Keith and ReNae Pilgrim. With their combined passion for wine and adventurous spirit, the founding of Terra Blanca quickly became a reality. After purchasing virgin land in a desert

consisting of sagebrush located on the southwest slopes of what has become recognized as one the world’s great growing regions, Keith and ReNae began development of their Red Mountain vineyard and winery in early 1993. Terra Blanca crushed their first grapes in the autumn of that same year with purchased fruit and crushed their first estate-grown grapes in the fall of 1997. Currently, Terra Blanca has over 100 acres of vines in production with more added each year. Latin for “white earth,” Terra Blanca signifies the white carbonate-rich soils in its estate vineyard. The high-mineral, high-carbonate soils, along with the warm, dry and breezy southwest exposure allows Terra Blanca’s vineyard to produce concentrated grapes with a defined sense of place. Perched on the southwest slope of Red Mountain, Terra Blanca’s Tuscan-inspired architecture includes a beautifully appointed tasting room where you can expect breathtaking panoramic views of the lower Yakima Valley as well as a wine tasting experience like no other.
