Fredrik Ernst von Kamptz was a German sailor from Deven close to Mecklenburg, Germany.

He was left behind in the Cape at the Dutch settlement that served as a refreshment station to

enable sailors with illness or scurvy to regain their health.

As von Kamptz’s health returned, he wooed the widow of Johan Jan Lodewyk Wernich, owner of

Ravensteyn on Roodekrantz, the first farmhouse in the area we now know as Camps Bay. Johan

inherited the farm from his father who was granted the land by his father, Joachim Wernich,

Burgermeester of Bismark.

The wealthy, lonely widow with her six children was won over and von Kamptz was soon the

proud owner of the estate. The area became known as “Die baai van von Kamptz”, which

eventually evolved into “Camps Bay”.

Described as one of the world’s most beautiful vineyards, Klein Constantia is set amidst ancient trees and lush greenery on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg,

with superb views across the Constantia Valley and False Bay.

Our 146 hectare wine estate originally formed part of “Constantia”, a vast property established in 1685 by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the Cape. This

particular valley was chosen not only for its beauty, but also for the decomposed granite soils on its slopes, gently cooled by ocean breezes.

Prized by leaders and aristocracy throughout 18th Century Europe, Constantia’s Vin de Constance was revived by Klein Constantia in 1986, reaffirming this unique

On the slopes of Bottelary Hills bordering Stellenbosch, is a family estate where nature provides the perfect backdrop to grow, produce and share award-winning wines.

Nestled in a valley on the free-draining, north-eastern slopes. Vineyards face north, west,

and east, with varietals planted to take advantage of either morning or afternoon sun. There is a difference in altitude of some 250m between the northern and southern vineyards.

On 1 January 1987, Ken Mackenzie, purchased Hartenberg,

having seen the potential that the perennial under-achiever offered.

His daughters continue a program of investment in the farm, focusing on three key areas: the replanting to specific sites of premium varietals, the development of production

facilities, and the upliftment, through knowledge and skills for employees.

The Mackenzie vision, though extremely ambitious, remains simple: “to do whatever it takes to produce wines of outstanding quality”.

Winter invites you to intimate fireside lunches and sumptuous reds,

charcuterie and olives. Summer at Hartenberg brings picnics on the lawns followed by buoyant games of boules. Our Wetland Conservation Area, alongside the vineyards,

makes for a beautiful setting for walks and shared family fun.

Vibrant with a green tinge and flavours of asparagus, passionfruit, litchi, guava and green figs on the nose. Elegant on the palate with flavours of tinned asparagus, passionfruit, kelp and minerality. This wine has a good balance between fruit and acidity and has a long aftertaste.

The wine dazzles with intense aromas of green pear and citrus fruits. The palate bursts with passion fruit and citrus flavours with hints of fresh cut lemon grass and nettle. Refreshing with a great crisp finish.

CHARDONNAY

A pale strawberry colour with a hint of green in the glass. Intense nose of fresh pineapple, lemon, citrus and floral notes. The mid-palate is broad and appealing supported by a lingering acidity.

This Unwooded Chardonnay exhibits subtle green melon and lemon lime characters on the nose. The palate consists of peach and honey with a tang of green apples. The richly texturd creaminess and length is generated by extended lease contact in the cement tanks prior to bottling, allowing the fruit to express itself with little human intervention and little preservative being used throughout the maturation period.

With 30% of the wine aged in new oak for 10 months, this Chardonnay shows an intense aroma of lime-tree blossom gooseberry, peach and citrus on the nosewith soft and generous flavours of stone fruits and citrus on the palate. The creamy texture is balanced with fine acid and is perfectly paired with line fish, scallops and mushroom risotto.

Fermented and matured in French oak, this complex wine shows a fine balance between crisp citrus and pear flavours with toasted almonds and butterscotch.

This unwooded Chardonnay presents a fragrant bouquet of honey, orange blossom and flintiness with hints of freshly baked bread. The palate is elegantly well balanced thanks for a small addition of barrel fermented Chardonnay. The finish is long and pleasing with a low acidity.

The Chardonnay Reserve has a complex character with a pale straw colour. On the nose, notes of barrel fermentation, vanilla, and crème caramel come forward, integrating gently with aromas of tropical fruit. The mouth-feel is rich and buttery, ending in a wine with beautiful extraction of fruit and elegant acidity that brightens the palate.

Our Chardonnay displays a bouquet of lifted apricot blossom, lemon and suggestions of vanilla and oak. The palate shows prominent pineapple and ripe pear characters, interlaced with chalky acidity. This wine is creamy and nutty with a soft refined palate and finishes with great intensity.

tokara - reserve collection stellenbosch R400The aromas are that of ripe summer fruits, lemon zest and a touch of toasted almonds. There is a certain white floral fragrance to the wine with a hint of marzipan and a touch of flintiness. The wine entres the palate reminiscent of the summer fruits on the nose.

Fruity, crisp pineapple and Golden Delicious apple fragrance. Similar apple flavours transfer to the mouth, with elder flower and honeysuckle nuances. Tangy peach with a lively lime zest note is apparent too. The wine offers ample refreshment and crisp appeal by virtue of its integration of fruit and acidity.

Fresh, fine-grained nose of quince, satsuma, white flower, nettles and freshly cracked walnuts; classy, sleek structure with subtle citrus fruit softened with textured creaminess, vanilla and nutty complexity from the 12 months barrel maturation. Tangy mineral tones with fine intensity and balance; good focus and length with a refreshing finish.

A full bodied wine with a more onion skin colour rather than red/pink. Typical Pinotage floral aromas with prominent red fruit flavours. Staying with the Kanonkop philosophy, this is a full-bodied food wine. Add a bit of ice for spice.

bartinney - noble savage cabernet sauvignon blanc R135

This gorgeous pomegranate blushed wine displays perfumed strawberry and rose petal aromas on the nose and follows through with crushed raspberries on the palate. With its balanced sweetness and fresh acidity, this Rosé is perfectly suited for al fresco dining and lighter fare.

2016 babylonstoren - Mourvèdre R135

Particularly pretty salmon pink coloured wine with raspberries and rose petals on the nose. Strawberry yoghurt on the palate with fresh acidity for a delicious, lingering mouth-feel. An unusual choice of variety for a rosé, but what a winner!

klein constantia R145Bright with a salmon colour that is typical of this Blanc de Noir styled Rosé. A light, crisp and easy to drink wine with aromas of pomegranate, red berries and white peaches. Good acidity with a chalky minerality that lingers in a long and luscious finish.

SHIRAZ

This wine has a complex nose with overtones of black and white pepper, pomegranate, cigar box, cloves and spice. On the palate there is a vibrant red fruit, blackcurrent and dark chocolate flavours, under-pinned by well-integrated oak with a long spicy finish.

2014 babylonstoren R330

A wine of deep ruby red colour with cherry and soft prune dark fruit flavours. Cool cassis and pencil shavings on the nose as well as a little dustiness and fragrant violets. Surprisingly fresh mid palate, velvety mouth-feel and long lingering finish. *Top 12 Award at 2016 Shiraz Challenge.

Good colour and tight, concentrated tannins from the Walker Bay area are combined with spicy, intensely flavoured wine from Elim and elegant, juicy wine from Franschhoek, to produce a wine full of flavour and complexity. The nose reflects raspberry and cranberry with liquorice and green pepper spice. The splash of Viognier adds a rose petal perfume.

PINOTAGE

Diemersdal R250

This wine shows a complex nose of red fruits, vanilla, exotic spices, and rich dark chocolate aromas. The palate is full flavoured and smoothly textured with oriental spice, chocolate and roasted banana flavours.

hidden valley R255

Deep ruby in colour with a crimson hue, the wine is big and bold yet surprisingly soft on the palate. Aromatic plum, mint, chocolate and vanilla on the nose are a delightful departure from trafitional Pinotage. Rich, seductive flavours of mocha and mulberry show with ripe, spicy blackberry and chocolate on the palate.

The wine has a ruby red hue in the glass. The nose shows red cherry, cedar wood, dark chocolate aromas. The palate is well rounded with ripe subtle tannins and a long finish.

kanonkop R760

Matured in mainly new 225 litre French Nevers barrels for up to 16 months. This is a full-bodied wine, has a deep ruby colour exuding the flavours of red and black berries, raspberry, plum and hints of banana.

MERLOT

Muratie - alberta annemarie R230

Intense dark red colour with ripe, fruity flavours and a hint of vegetal aromas. Lovely spiciness, hints of cinnamon, beetroot and red fruits. Sweet beginning which is balanced bt the acidity and ripe tannin.

sterhuis R275

This wine is classic in style, serious yet with very accessible flavours of fresh plums, mulberries, spicy fruitcake, chocolate and coffee on the nose. The palate is elegant with spicy fruicake, mulberry and plum fruits with integrated oak flavours and a velvety soft tannin finish.

Silky and elegant with long, lasting flavours. Expect black and red fruits, vanilla and orchards of plum. Great with pasta, chicken and duck dishes.

PINOT NOIR

Fryer’s cove - bamboes bay R265

Light, vibrant pomegranate red with an orange tinge. Flavours of ripe plums, cherries, herbs and vanilla spice with earthy and organic undertones. This wine has the perfect balance between fruit and tannin and has a good minerality on the aftertaste.

muratie - george paul carnitz R465

Bright, concentrated strawberry to garnet hue which is exceptional for a Pinot Noir. Very ripe and luscious smell, velvety and round, cherry flavoured with the ripeness and leathery notes typical of our climate.

Crystallum - peter max R495

Luscious and intense with an incredible expression of pure Pinot fruit. Loaded with sweet strawberry, blueberry and cassis while the complex savoury elements back this fruit up with spice, forest floor and a touch of smoky oak.

bouchard finlayson - galpin peak R750

This bottling reflects lots of plum and wild berry fruit, under layered by spicy French Oak upholding a gracious and persistent tannin structure. It has a rich core and promises added dimensions over a period of ageing.

MALBEC

This lively Malbec spent sixteen months in French oak which lends an intense spiciness to enhance the sweet red berry fruit. Perfectly paired with spicy Mexican, Cajun, Indian or Italian dishes.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Dark chocolate, bramble berries, star anise, cracked cloves, black pepper and notes of fresh thyme.

The rich berry fruits, balanced tannins and soft finish make this wine a true reflection of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Paarl region. Pair with prime rib, cripsy roast duck or any other hearty dish.

la motte R310

This wine reflects varietal aromas on the nose, with wild berries, tomato leaf, cedar, cinnamon spice, dark chocolate and prominent truffle. The heavy-bodied palate has a firm structure, a fine tannin texture and a pleasant dry aftertaste.

With an intense colour, this pleasing, full-bodied wine is redolent of red berries with deliciously soft tannins and a well-rounded mouth-feel. This wine pairs well with all red meat dishes.

The wine has intense aromas of dark cherries, black currants and cedar spice. There are savoury notes of five spices and dark chocolate with a touch of black pepper. The flavours on the palate reflect the aromas of the wine: deep, dark and heavy.

bartinney - vintage 2012 R480

Our cabernet Sauvignon is a vibrant and full bodied wine. The nose displays aromatic plum and dense cassis with a hint of mint. Classic oak characteristics like chocolate, cedar and roasted coffee beans compliment the black berry fruit flavours. The tannins are refined but present and this wine will be at its best +5 years.

SYRAH

This wine is a dark ruby red and has an aroma of mulberries, strawberries and hints of dark chocolate and black currant with white pepper, spice and vinalla on the palate. Complex with persistent, soft tannins that produce a rich mouth-feel and long finish.

Notes of pomegranate, refined red fruits and white pepper on the nose. The palate is full bodied and lingers with spicy flavours. Pair with leaner red meats, stews or Indian curry.

RED BLEND

2014 babylonstoren - babel R215

The 2014 vintage Babel Red is a blend of 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Shiraz, 19% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 11% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. The wines were made seperately and were aged 1st, 2nd and 3rd fill French Oak barrels for 12 months. It is a fusion of red berry and chocolate, flavours with sweet tobacco and fynbos on the nose.

kanonkop - kadette R220

Kanonkop’s second lanel. A blend of 50% plus Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Matured in 225 litre French Nevers barrels for up to 16 months.

64% Semillon and 36% Sauvignon Blanc make a rich and complex wine with earthy and quince characteristics, elegantly blanced with a lingering minerality.

Elegant in style, this wine shows aromas of violets, concentrated red fruit, with a soft and juicy palate and well rounded tannins.

Merlot is the foundation of this blend, providing a silky palate and elegance, with Malbec adding a vibrant fruit and colour. Cabernet Franc is to the blend what salt is to food, a pinch here and there. The Malbec comes from shallow sandy soils in Franschhoek, whislt the Merlot and Cabernet Franc both originate from deep, clay-rich Tukulu soils in Stellenbosch.

Classico has an intense ruby colour and a gentle bouquet of sweet blueberry, cassis, cherry and a hint of spiced cedar-wood. On the pallet it delivers a well structured and velvety mouth feel with a soft, elegant, lingering aftertaste. Great aging potential.

Black olive, fynbos, spicy, dusty and toasty with European minerality on the nose. Generous length, integrated tannins, medium body, pure intensity, silky consistency, an elegant structure, fresh finish and flowing balance on the palate.

Dominant flavours of berry aromas, followed by pencil shavings and cedar on the nose. Layers of flavours with clean lines. A wonderful balance between the elegance of the wine and the ripeness of the fruit.

Dark garnet hue, full and rich aromas of black berries and red fruits on the nose. Rounded tannins with a lingering finish on the palate. This vold wine pairs well with grilled lamb or organic beef.

The wine has a brilliant deep ruby colour, complex nose of black cherries, violets, mocca, with a hint of classic French oak. The pallet is long with black berry fruit over a backbone of silky tannins which will enhance a long development in the bottle.

Superbly smooth with lots of leather ending in a harmonious creamy finish. The colour is bright garnet and the composition here is Sangiovese 52%, Pinot Noir 17%, Nebbiolo 15%, Mourvedre 8%, Shiraz 6% and Barbera 2%. Flavours of wild berries, black cherry, and spicy plum all combine to present this happy result.
