Ascots wine program is based on the following philosophy:

“The topic of Wine may seem intimidating, but it is first and

foremost a sensual pleasure, not an intellectual one”.

* We work diligently to keep the Wine List up to date. Because of limited quantities available of some selected wines, vintages may change during service.

Ascots is very proud to have been recognized

by two of the most important and influential

AWARD OF DISTINCTION

“And said to be the Nation’s most wine friendly Restaurant”

If you would like to take a peek at our Wine Cellar, please let us know.

“ I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad.

Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone.

When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m

not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it -

unless I’m thirsty.”

CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY Quality has risen dramatically over the last few years, so much so, that many now consider this category a great rival for the French Burgundies. Gone are the heavy, overly oaked, course wines of the past. These days the wines have more finesse el-egance and balance. They are round, generous and mouth-filling but with com-plexity and length. There is also much diversity between the appellations. Many of the wines have a cult following. California Chardonnay has truly come of age.

SAUVIGNON & FUME BLANC Sauvignon Blanc has at last found its niche. These are wines that have much less power and body than Chardonnay but have more vibrancy and zing. The great debate today is whether or not the wines benefit from any oak contact. Those winemakers that do like the use of oak do so sparingly, generally 1-3 months at most. The key they feel, is to try to tame the grassiness and green apple flavours whilst bringing out the pear, fig and citrus nuances and still retain the refreshing acidity. This is now a popular category for those seeking other than Chardonnay. 227 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Russian River Valley ......................................... 120.00 228 Grgich Hills Fume-Blanc 2015, Napa Valley .................................................................... 99.00 229 Duckhorn Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2017, Napa Valley ................................................ 95.00 230 Cakebread Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Napa Valley ............................................................... 92.00 231 Chalk Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Chalk Hill, Sonoma ................................................... 90.00 232 Robert Mondavi Winery, Fume-Blanc 2014, Napa Valley ................................................ 88.00 234 Simi Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Sonoma County .................................................................. 75.00 235 Chateau Ste Michelle, S/Blanc 2016, Columbia Valley ..................................................... 54.00 236 Ferrari-Carano Fume-Blanc 2015, Sonoma County ......................................................... 49.00

AUSTRALIA – THE REDS Australian winemaking today is on the cutting edge. Its red wines can be world

beaters. A willingness to experiment and sometimes take great chances means

there are always new and exciting wines on the market. The current trend is for

less filtration and manipulation of its wines. Whilst this may mean more sediment

forming in the bottle, it also means more pure expressive flavour. A small price to

pay for better wine!

PORT WINE

“The grapes of Port” Among the finest are the heavily-scented Tourigas-

Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesa-producing wine of enormous scale

and concentration; the Tinta Roriz with its firm tannins and distinctive cedary

nose; the supple, flowery Tinta Barroca; and the Tinta Cão, one of the oldest

varieties cultivated in the Douro.

Where do the GiantBottles names come from

Jeroboam, actually Jeroboam II, was King of Israel during the traditional year of Roma’s found-ing (753BC) and as the Greeks were emerging from Dark Age that separated Homer from Par-thenon.

A son of Solomon, Rehoboam (meaning “the clan is enlarged” according to Willard Espy) be-came King of Judah in 933 BC.

Methuselah was an antediluvian patriarch described in the Old Testament as having lived 969 years and whose name is synonymous with great age. He may well have evolved from a charac-ter of earlier Sumerian Legend who lived for 65,000 years. To the Old Testament scribes this was perhaps too tall a tale, so they may have cut him back to a more conservative lifespan.

Shalmaneser I – alternatively spelled Salmanazar – was an Assyrian monarch who reigned around 1250 BC, just about the time the science of iron smelting was first imported into his kingdom from Anatolia.

Balthazar (“King of Treasures”) is the traditional name of one of the Three Wise Men, the other two being Melchoir (“King of Light”) and Gaspar (“The White One”). Many scholars now-adays tend to characterize the trio not as kings but rather as Zoroastrian priests, while others speculate that at least one of them was a king – namely Azes II of Bactria who reigned from 35 BC to 10 AD.

Whatever their occupations, legend and German tourist brochures have it that the Three Wise Men – or at the very least their skulls – lie buried in a golden shrine at Cologne Cathedral.

Nebuchadnezzar, originally nabu-kudurri-usur meaning “Nabu protect the boundary,” became King of the Chaldean Empire in 604 BC. He was actually the second Nebuchadnezzar; a less cel-ebrated Nebuchadnezzar I preceded him by 500 years.
