Follow us @WineExtra

2013 Saw another bumper year when it came to South

African entries into the International Wine & Spirit Competition. Boosted by the fact that the initial round of

judging took place locally at the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl, this encouraged many local wine producers to enter the competition. The cost saving made due to not having to ship samples abroad is most certainly a huge benefit, especially considering the current rate of exchange.

In excess of 650 local wines were entered with a further 100+ entries from mostly UK retailers who import bulk South African wines and over 100 spirits and liqueur entries were received.

This year saw fewer Gold Outstanding and Gold winners, but with a spate of Trophy winners across the board, from product trophies to producer trophies, South African producers can most certainly hold their heads high.

In its 3rd year now, the media partnership between Wine Extra and the IWSC has seen a lot of growth, which includes a joint venture in which Wine Extra owner, TWS Media and the IWSC launched the first locally judged What Food, What Wine? SA compe-tition. It was a huge success and we look forward to seeing this food and wine pairing competition grow in popularity and stature.

I know that I speak for most of the South African wine industry and consumers when I say that we are proud of what is produced in our country. The 2013 results from the most prestigious wine and spirits competition goes further to prove this to be absolutely so.

Well done!

6 WINE EXTRA INTERNATIONAL WINE & SPIRIT COMPETITION

Established in 1969, The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) was the first competition of its kind, set up to seek out, reward and promote

the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs. Now in its 45th year, The IWSC’s relentless pursuit of excellence underpins every aspect of the Competition today.

What sets the IWSC apart is the formidable reputation of its judging process. Judging panels consist of carefully selected global industry experts and comprise Masters of Wine, buyers, Master Distillers, Master Blenders, Master Sommeliers; WSET qualified educators and respected wine and spirit journalists. Every single

wine and spirit is assessed on its own merits within the context of its class.

Currently receiving entries from around 90 countries, the IWSC is truly international in its reach and recognition. Various partners around the world work throughout the year to drive awareness and promote winners to both trade and consumer audiences.

With 45 years heritage, an IWSC Award is recognised internationally as a badge of quality. “If you are lucky enough to win an International Trophy from the IWSC the reputation of your brand is immediately enhanced domestically and internationally. Wine show success at the IWSC has an incredible positive influence on wine buyers around the world, especially to those in the emerging markets,” says Neil McGuigan, CEO Australian Vintage.

Each year sees the appointment of a new Chair to oversee all of the IWSC proceedings and for 2014, the well-respected and highly recognized Dr. Laura Catena, takes to the stage. The fourth generation of the influential winemaking family Catena, Laura is known as ‘the face of Argentine wine.’ Her Italian great grandfather settled in Mendoza and established the winery in 1902. Her father, Nicolas Catena Zapata was instrumental in bringing the Malbec grape onto the world stage. Today, she travels around the world, sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for the wines of her country.

Laura is currently Managing Director of Bodega Catena Zapata and her own Luca Wines in Mendoza, a role

which she combines with her other career as a practising physician of Emergency Medicine in San Francisco. The IWSC is honoured to have such a remarkable, dynamic and committed ambassador as its 2014 President and looks forward to a great year ahead.

With a track-record of 45 years of experience and the support of the leaders of the wine and spirits industries, the IWSC staunchly upholds its original judging principles. It is this uncompromising commitment to these principles, which sets the competition apart.

All judges must attend an introduction and briefing and may also be asked to attend a trial judging day before being permitted to sit on a panel. Detailed chemical analysis helps refine judging to further assess a product’s future stability and legal compliance. Every single wine is assessed on its own merits within the context of its class. The Technical and Judging Committee gives independent assurance to the IWSC Board of the quality, integrity, accuracy and impartiality of the assessment of products entered in the competition each year.

“There are competitions and there are competitions, but the IWSC is one of the few that really works as it is recognised by consumers. Effective competitions need to connect with the consumer and that is something the IWSC does well,” comments Bruce Jack, Winemaker at Flagstone Wines.

Comes the time, comes the grape!!

The time has come to move out of the deep rut of long wine lists with no Chenin blanc in sight. Chenin blanc today is recognised by any

restaurateur worth the pepper in his pepper-grinder.

Article courtesy of Ken Forrester, Chairman of the Chenin Blanc Association

It has to be the most versatile, suddenly stylish, delicious and simply the easiest drinking white wine we know. Fortunately as a wine producing country we are very

well endowed, with more than any country in the world, in fact almost 60% of all the Chenin blanc in the world is right here in sunny South Africa.

So what makes it good? Actually it’s an interesting question, what makes Chenin blanc good is a unique blend of “Cool Sunshine.” Our sunshine ticks that box and any site that is elevated or in the path of coastal breezes.

Therein lies the magical ingredient for top quality production of Chenin blanc grapes. There has been a rush in the last 3 or 4 years of many younger winemakers, making stylish, even hipster Chenin blanc wines, cleaning up at awards ceremonies. The StellenRust “48” won the trophy at IWSC for the 2nd consecutive year for Best Chenin blanc.

For Chenin the time has come. The Chenin Blanc Association boasts over 100 members, a brand new sponsor in Standard Bank, a Chenin blanc Competition

Page 9: Wine Extra IWSC Supplement

for August and an International Chenin blanc Conference in November; there’s more going on here than in Camps Bay at New Year!

The leaders of the pack include many of the stalwarts, the Bernard Series, Spier, Beaumont, Simonsig, Jean Daneel, Kleine Zalze and the new kids on the block, Mullineux, StellenRust, Sadie Family, the dynamic, biodynamic Reyneke, Botanica from our newest USA import Ginny Povall, De Morgenzon, Alheit with their Radio Lazarus and the ever so svelte and stylish Delaire Graff.

There is a Chenin buzz going on for sure, and almost without doubt or exception for the same money Chenin will outperform any competitor. Try the test yourself, go spend R50 on Chenin and another wine and have a little blind tasting amongst friends. You may be very pleasantly surprised.

This advantageous situation can’t last forever. As the demand increases , so will the pricing. We see growers asking more money for “old vine Chenin” and so they should, it’s certainly time the growers were rewarded for the years of nurturing those vines. The yields are always lower, so they demand a quality premium and it’s all finally happening. Be on the lookout for Chenin blanc and if your local eatery doesn’t stock any, we would suggest you find a new favourite spot!

S o u t h A f r i c a n b r a n d i e s c o n t i n u e t o h a v e international connoisseurs in raptures. Eight of the country’s leading labels have been deemed worthy of the Gold Outstanding award of distinction at the 2013 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) held in London.

Among those receiving a score of 90 or higher on the 100-point scale were three pot-still brandies from the Van Ryn’s Brandy Cellar in Stellenbosch: the Van Ryn’s Collectors Reserve 20 Year Old, the Fine Cask Reserve 15 Year Old and the Distillers Reserve 12 Year Old. The other Gold Outstanding

awards went to the Oude Meester Souverein 18 Year Old and Reserve 12 Year Old, the Nederburg Solera Potstilled (a three-year-old) and the Mellow-Wood and Commando blended brandies.

Nine other brandies received Gold awards: Imoya, Mellow-Wood Five Year Old, Van Ryn’s Vintage 10 Year Old, Richelieu Export Liqueur Brandy, Richelieu Old Vintage Brandy 10 Year Old, Oude Meester Demant, Klipdrift Premium, Collison’s White Gold Potstilled and Viceroy Five Year Old.

gave South African brandy, with the third-highest number of entries (40) after Cognac (56) and Armagnac and Calvados (47), a ‘high hit rate’, said the inimitable Dave Hughes. A qualified distiller and local and international wine and spirit judge of longstanding repute, Hughes is a regular taster at the IWSC. He was one of 17 expert brandy palates from around the world (including France, the UK, South Africa, the USA, Germany, Italy and India) who served on two panels of at least five judges ‘blind’ tasting this year’s more than 200 entries from all the major brandy-producing countries over three days.

South Africa’s top achievers were variously described as a ‘masterpiece of satisfaction’, ‘incredibly rich’, ‘satisfying and relaxing in a luxurious way’ and having ‘superb balance’.

Hughes has commented before that: “South Africa’s modern brandies are notably fruity and elegant, a particular result of our sun-warmed vines. What is

emerging is that the international panels of judges, predominantly leading UK and European (including Cognac) spirits buyers and distillers, are enjoying this distinctive style.”

He points out that South African brandy makers have become world experts on the effects of wood-ageing on fine wine spirit following research by a local brandy master. “The change in style from the traditionally heavily wooded cognac, which many countries are still trying to copy, has come through better management of the ageing of the spirit in carefully cured and selected barrels.’

According to Christelle Reade-Jahn, director of the South African Brandy Foundation, the local industry can be particularly proud of the fact that South African brandies across the style spectrum – blended, vintage and pot-stilled – are being acknowledged internationally for their superior quality.

Page 12: Wine Extra IWSC Supplement

12 WINE EXTRA INTERNATIONAL WINE & SPIRIT COMPETITION

C onsidering the overall footprint that South African wine has internationally, it is surprising, for some, just how well our wines

and producers do in this competition every year.

Taking home a total of 7 trophies, it is no wonder that the world is starting to turn its expectant gaze on South Africa.

Trophy winners are:

South African Wine Producer of the Year sponsored by Dave Hughes – Kanonkop Wines

Best African Spirits Producer – Distell Ltd.

IWSC Trophy for Best Blended Red Wine – Kanonkop Wine Estate

Wine Extra Trophy for Best Chenin Blanc – StellenRust Wines

IWSC Trophy for Best Dessert Wine – Nederburg Wines

The Pinotage Association Trophy for Best Pinotage – KWV SA

IWSC Trophy for Best Cognac – Distell Ltd.

Anna Grant, the IWSC’s Head of Sales and Marketing commented, “The trophies, once again this year have recognised some outstanding wines from both large and small scale producers and we are delighted to award them to such high quality products.”

Wine and spirits are lifestyle elements that are integral to the lives of many people. Add food to the mix and a good experience suddenly becomes great.

South African celebrity Chef and Chef Patron at

The Goose Roasters, Craig Cormack sampled all of the trophy winning wines and prepared a mouth-watering menu of dishes that are perfectly paired with these wines and the cognac.

Incorporating his ‘love affair’ with salt into some of the recipes, Craig shares his thoughts on the winners alongside their creators and showcases his fantastic skill of taking food and wine to a whole new level.

“Versatility is our game. If it has food in it, we will be there. Have wheels can travel,” comments Cormack. So, if you want this special 5-course meal prepared by the expert himself, get in touch by calling 082 562 8360 or check out www.thegooseroaster.co.za.

with their inner self. Old vineyards rarely live up to the exuberance of the vintage, but rather to their consistency brought on by age. To work with old bushvine Chenin is an absolute blessing from God giving us the opportunity to express the beautiful warmth South Africa has to offer in rich ripe fruit.

Why do you think that this wine was the overall Trophy winner? It ‘s a question of balance. Blind tastings are always very difficult – especially if you work with ‘unshowy’ older vineyards where their strength is packed in their elegance. Finding a balance between what nature gives you and what you do in the winery is extremely important – whether it is the oak regime you use or the sugar level you bottle at. The wine is sculptured to show well in its youth, but better in its older age. Any good taster should be able to spot that.

Chenin Blanc 2012

Craig Cormack’s pairing suggestion:

Knysna oysters served with tomato and Tabasco sorbet, pepper tuille, lemon jelly and limoncello

Why did you feel this was a good pairing? Due to the aged vineyards and the flavour profile, this dish works really well. The idea when pairing the dish is to taste all of the components and use the shooter for a bit of fun.

Craig’s thoughts on the wine:An old-school style wine, which I really enjoyed. The age of the vineyards is amazing and you can taste it in each sip.

Tertius Boshoff’s opinion on the wine: It is definitely one of the best vintages of the single vineyard Chenin Blanc. The wine shows great

depth and a beautiful analysis, which indicates it is only in its youth and has a long way to go. We are extremely privileged to have made history with two

consecutive vintages securing the IWSC International Chenin Blanc Trophy.

What was your inspiration when making this wine?I am an absolute Chenin fanatic and above all an old vine fanatic. I believe that old vineyards are like older people – they seem to know it all and have made peace

Abrie Beeslaar’s opinion on this wine: I love the complexity of the wine. There are no standout features, but rather layers that

make you want to delve deeper into the wine.

What was your inspiration when making this wine?My inspiration lies in the joy of drinking wine. The better you understand a vineyard, the more you allow it to shine.

Why do you think that this wine was a Trophy winner? I think it is a very good example of old-style Bordeaux meeting modern winemaking techniques, and by modern winemaking I mean technically correct.

Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2009

Craig Cormack’s pairing suggestion:

Kudu loin, celeriac puree, garam masala potatoes, baby veggies, jus Why did you feel this was a good pairing? The blend has so much complexity, which for me fits into this great wine. The potatoes with the spice really tie this dish together and rounds off the wine. Craig’s thoughts on the wine:This wine, if slightly chilled makes it the Paul Sauer of old. This is a bomb of a combination in my books.

The pinotage Association Trophy for Best pinotage

KWV The Mentors Pinotage 2011

Johann Fourie’s opinion on this wine: The wine truly displays the wonderful character of Pinotage. Aromas of mocha, plum, violets

and fruitcake are in harmony with dark chocolate and strawberry flavours on the palate. The abundance of fresh fruit is complemented by soft, velvety tannins with a lingering, seamless finish.

What was your inspiration when making this wine?Pinotage and KWV go back a long way. Pinotage also happenes to be the first wine I ever made

and has always been a personal passion and a challenge. Creating a new-world style Pinotage that is fruit driven and elegant was the main focus, expressing typical Pinotage characteristics that showcases the best qualities of this South African varietal.

Why do you think that this wine was the overall Trophy winner? This is a modern style Pinotage and even though it’s serious with lots of fruit layers and palate concentration it’s still wrapped around with overall elegance and finesse. This site-specific wine shows varietal expression in combination with the terroir from a very special bush vine vineyard. A wine we only bottle in those vintages that meet the winemaking team’s quality expectations for a Mentors label - 2011 being one of those vintages!

Craig Cormack’s pairing suggestion:

Pork belly, pea puree, pea salad, dauphine potatoes, jus Why did you feel this was a good pairing? My favourite dish, I simply love pork. The wine cuts beautifully through the fattiness and the complexities of sweet and savoury work well.

Craig’s thoughts on the wine:Typically Pinotage, the flavour on entry is sweet, with a drier finish afterwards. This is exactly the same experience one gets when it is paired with the food.

KWV Winemaker, Johann Fourie

Neederburg Cellar Master, Razvan Macici›s opinion on this wine: One of our finest vintages of Nederburg Eminence. The grapes

for the Noble Late Harvest Eminence are Muscat de Frontignan, harvested from a very special vineyard situated on the slopes of Simondium. The grapes are mostly raisins at the moment of harvest! The colour is golden straw. The palate displays an explosion of aromas, dried apricots, floral aromas and delicate mint. Great purity of fruit and perfect balance.

What was your inspiration when making this wine?My father, in my native Romania, was well known for the making of a similar dessert wine from a native variety, Tamaioasa, which is very close to

the Muscat de Frontignan. This is the first wine I had the privilege to make, together with my father… many years ago!.

Why do you think that this wine was the overall Trophy winner? Purity of fruit, heavenly Muscat aromas and great balance between the decadent sweetness and the fresh acidity. A classic!

Craig Cormack’s pairing suggestion:

Pineapple ravioli, fresh fruit, plum coulis, mint Why did you feel this was a good pairing?A clean take on such a big, sweet wine. I decided to cut it with sorbet and thus accentuate the fresh notes of the wine. Craig’s thoughts on the wine:The wine is quite sweet with not much acidity, but the flavours are really yummy...

Craig Cormack’s pairing suggestion:

Roasted bananas, peanut and chocolate mousse lightly salted, with tonka bean ice cream Why did you feel this was a good pairing?Wow! SA brandies are some of the finest, the bananas roasted give me some of the same traits and I decided to add salt as a finish - “my obsession” this really lifts and complements the dish. Craig’s thoughts on the brandy:I added a block of ice into the cognac, which softened the spirit and thus the two combinations worked well.

Richelieu Global Marketing Manager, Fred Leclezio comments on the win: This achievement is an absolute testament to

the French brandy making principles we define ourselves by

iWsC Trophy for Best Cognac Richelieu XO Cognac

What was your inspiration when making this brandy?Matured in French oak, only the finest eaux-de-vie from Cognac’s Grande and Petite Champagne regions have been hand-selected to become part of the crown jewel of the Richelieu collection.

Why do you think that this brandy was the overall Trophy winner? This incredible achievement couldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of our brandy masters and partners.

Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch Region of the Cape and

confidently boasts with some of South Africa’s most premium wines.

Kanonkop is a fourth generation family estate, which was originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. This estate has since then been handed down from father to son for over 40 years and is now in the talented, capable hands of its current owners Paul & Johann Krige.Kanonkop Estate has been described by those in the know as being the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru or First Growth. International awards accumulated over more than a decade have gone a long way to substantiate these claims.

The name Kanonkop was derived from a kopje (hillock), from which a cannon was fired in the 17th Century to alert farmers in outlying areas that sailing ships plying the waters between Europe and the Far East had entered Table Bay for a stopover at Cape Town.

The people of Kanonkop make it what it is. They are not just workers or employees – they are the Estate. The majority of the 54 men and women employed on the Estate, live there as well. The management style employed is one of decision-making from the bottom up, with profit sharing a major incentive for all employees. Everyone on the

Estate is encouraged to participate in community projects, undertake worker-training programmes and to set and develop their own personal goals and objectives.

Kanonkop is renowned for its red wines, with Pinotage making up 50% of all plantings, Cabernet Sauvignon 35%, Merlot 7.5% and Cabernet franc the rest. Pinotage vines have been retained as bush vines to provide optimum sunlight, which allows for maximum ripeness. These vines were some of the first commercially planted Pinotage to be established in the Cape and most are over 50 years old.

Hardly any irrigation is needed due to their ideal soil type and location. Optimum ripeness plays a major role in producing good red wine and on the estate a careful check is done to ensure that the grapes are picked at perfection.

Winemaking at Kanonkop fol lows the age-old tradition of being made in open concrete fermenters, but with a slight difference, the tanks are wide and shallow, rather high and deep. This ensures maximum skin contact. Only French Nevers barrels are used for breeding, with the exception of a few experimental barrels each year. All cellaring, bottling and labelling is done on Kanonkop.

“This trophy is a tribute to the Kanonkop Team, arguably the best Wine Team on the Globe!”, comments a proud Johann Krige.

20 WINE EXTRA INTERNATIONAL WINE & SPIRIT COMPETITION

Quite a few years ago the board members of the Pinotage Association agreed that after the success of a competition boosting the

unique selling point of South Africa’s homegrown red wine variety, Pinotage, (bred and planted by Abraham Izak Perold in 1925 at Stellenbosch), the same should be done with red wine blends containing Pinotage.

The vision was that it could be branded as the Cape Blend, with the aim to make it an internationally known wine style brand which portrays a very special blended wine from the Cape winelands. In the same manner as wine lovers around the world know what a Bordeaux red blend is, that classic full-bodied French wine created from a combination of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot or Cabernet Franc, they will get to know what a Cape Blend is.

When the word spread that this proposed plan of action would be implemented, many winemakers

who then believed (a few still do) that South Africa’s blends containing Shiraz make up the main identity of typical Cape blends, did not like the concept that Pinotage should constitute the chief ingredient of South Africa’s distinctive Cape Blends. But due to the very simple fact that Pinotage is a home grown variety, they did not stand a chance.

Let’s start at the very beginning of each wine made on this earth, the vineyard. Pinotage thrives on South Africa’s climate and soil in the Cape winelands. The grapes ripen relatively early and can be grown in almost all of the wine regions. So, first and foremost, the viticulturist and farm manager must ensure that nature’s creation is of the finest. Second in the process is the winemaking team. The grapes must be fermented in a very fine way to produce the best in the barrel and/or tank at the end. When all of that has been done, the artistic side comes to the fore, selecting the very best from all the barrels and tanks to create the ultimate taste sensation in the bottle. The most artistic side

Blend well in the creative Cape

pinoTAge

of winemaking is blending different varieties to create a wine that will totally please the palate and also serve as a tasteful complement to various food dishes.

Looking at the composition of the top award-winning blends from the Perold ABSA Cape Blend competition since its launch in 2011, it is quite obvious that Pinotage’s favourite blending partners are Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nine of those wines contain Shiraz, of which six have at least 20% or more Shiraz. Cabernet Sauvignon was also blended into nine of those wines, of which six also have at least 20% or more Cabernet Sauvignon.

It therefore is quite clear that Pinotage blends especially well with Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. But after only three years of the competition involving the creative and experimental minds of South Africa’s oenologists, an increasing variety of styles of Cape Blends will be on their way for us to tastefully test and enjoy.

once again, Wine Extra in association with The Wine Show will be hosting an exclusive IWSC Champions Lounge at their flagship

show in Johannesburg. The Show returns to the prestigious Sandton Convention Centre, bringing its unique platform which includes direct sales to its visitors, edutainment in the form of Wine Theatres and the more relaxed side of things with sushi areas and boules courts.

The Wine Show aims to provide its visitors with the opportunity to experience a vast array of South African and international wines to suit every palate and every pocket and welcomes all wine lovers, from the novice to the connoisseur to this fun and entertaining wine experience.

The IWSC Champions Lounge will be open to all Show visitors at an additional charge of only R40. Regular sessions will be held throughout the Show period from 8-10 May and hosted by the Sommeliers Association of South Africa. In each session, different IWSC Gold and Trophy winning wines will be featured and discussed and visitors will have the opportunity to sample the wines and spirits, of which many are no longer available to buy due to limited stocks.
