On Tuesday, April 13, 2010 the new Bridge was pledged in by Chris Schooley, our District Commander, at the Windsor Yacht Club. It is great to have a few new faces on the Bridge and we are always looking for new members to participate on the Bridge or at our events. At the annual meeting I talked about my expectations for the upcoming year. We know that we are a group very concerned with boating safety. There have been some very unfortunate experiences on the waters that could have or may have been avoided if “Mr. Boater”, our general public, had taken the courses we offer. We have excellent courses on a wide variety of topics that are constantly being updated to meet changes in regulations and new technologies. So I was pondering what will be my direction as Commander over the next year? To attract more members of the general public to take our courses was a good place to start. That start would be to look at the CPS mission statement. The Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons’ mission reads as follows: To increase awareness and knowledge of safe boating by educating and training members and the general public, by fostering fellowship among members, and by establishing partnerships and alliances with organizations and agencies interested in boating. I would like to break the mission statement into obtainable goals for our upcoming year. In summary I see the following goals: 1) Increase public awareness of our organization and the courses we offer 2) Educate and train our members and the general public 3) Fostering fellowship among members 4) Increase alliances with organizations and agencies interested in boating The new Bridge is already starting to develop strategies for each of the goals. At the upcoming Bridge meeting on May 11, 2010 we will meet as a group to formalize the direction for the upcoming year. I would like to make sure everyone is aware that you are very welcome to attend the monthly Bridge meetings. Your input to discussions would be greatly appreciated. We will be using the new APPD Centre on Sandwich Street. The facility on Sandwich Street is right across from the landmark we all know, the Dominion House. Feel free to call me or email me if you have any suggestions to help to enhance our goals. I thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Commander for the upcoming year. I look forward to working with the new Bridge to obtain greater membership involvement and increased public awareness of safe boating in the next year. I look forward to seeing you out on the waters having safe and fun boating! Rob Donaldson, Commander Page 1 of 12 Windsor Waves

Windsor Power and Sail Squadron Log June, 2010www.WindsorPowerAndSail.ca Phone: 519.977.9611

In this issue: Your new Bridge, Courtesy Vessel Inspection, Safe Boating Awareness Week, Calendar of Events, special invitations, North Channel Cruise part 3 & more.

From the helm:Another boating season is here and we were fortunate to have such a mild winter and an early spring. By the time you read this letter your boat will likely be in the water. Many of us took different boating courses over the winter to prepare ourselves for a safe and fun boating season. There is still

opportunity to take advantage of a few courses currently being offered in the spring. Check our website for the offerings.

With the new boating season upon us we also have a new Bridge to represent your interests.

The Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons’ mission reads as follows:

To increase awareness and knowledge of safe boating by educating and training members and the general public, by fostering fellowship among members, and by establishing partnerships and alliances with organizations and agencies interested in boating.

I would like to break the mission statement into obtainable goals for our upcoming year. In summary I see the following goals: 1) Increase public awareness of our organization and the courses we offer2) Educate and train our members and the general public3) Fostering fellowship among members 4) Increase alliances with organizations and agencies interested in boating

The new Bridge is already starting to develop strategies for each of the goals.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

WESTERN ONTARIO DISTRICT Celebrates 50th Anniversary(remarks by Joe Gatfield, representing National Chief Commander)

The Windsor Power & Sail Squadron is one of nine Squadrons forming the Western Ontario District. There are 17 Districts in Canada. At the recent Annual General Meeting of the District, the Chief Commander’s representative had the following to say about our District:“That is the end of the Chief’s official remarks, but I will add some comments. This AGM marks the 50 th Anniversary of this District. Districts began 50 years ago to help serve CPS in the flow of Administration and the management of the organization. Your pennant now has the Gold bar symbolizing this achievement. But what has the District achieved.

• without the beginnings of this District, there would be no CPS, in other words, your District was the home of CPS founded in Windsor in 1938

• the first Squadron• the first Commander• the first Chief Commander• 10 Squadrons (now 9), many celebrating 50 and 60 years in the past two years….Sarnia, London,

Wallaceburg next week and St. Thomas in November• 100’s of volunteers at the Squadron, District and several at the National level….some of whom are here------continued on page 4 -------------------------------

• This District has always been looked upon as a leader from the National perspective….while others complained, Western Ontario resolved and moved on

• You have maintained a high level of educational value in all courses instructed• You have nurtured fellowship and friendship….my first District meeting was in 1992…and at that meeting in

Stratford, Tony and Mary Pritchard made me feel welcome…I have missed none since• Best yet, you have impacted the lives of thousands….probably hundreds of thousands whether it is Boating,

PCOC Course, Maritime Radio, or the many other courses. How many lives have you saved, or how many people are now having more fun because of the efforts of this District. Some of my fellow D/C’s are here today…it was a real honour to serve this District and I hope the tradition continues.

• Happy Anniversary to the District and all the members. You have an incredible history to celebrate.

Part three of P/C Commander Ken's North Channel Cruise: At Clapperton Island, there was only one hazard on the way to be avoided and early that afternoon the four boats were swinging at anchor in the harbour in front of an old abandoned lodge. There was a fishing lodge and resort here that has long been left to the elements. The roof had caved in but you could still see the old style evident and with a little imagination see the way it was in its heyday. One of our members of our group used to drink at the bar when it was still going strong and related a few of his stories. In the morning, we decided to head to Gore Bay to get some propane while the rest of the group headed to The Benjamin’s. We left early for the long motor into the prevailing west wind, passing through the tight channel between Clapperton and Manitoulin Island. We don’t like motoring but all our travel so far has been to the west, though we did manage to sail down into Gore Bay. After refueling, we headed out to find the corner store where we could get a tank refilled. At the far side of town we met a nice woman who explained the corner store was a few miles up a closed road and offered to drive us. It turned out to be a long drive and the girls at the store told us they would have come to get our tanks if we had called, so remember that if you have the types that require filling instead of exchanging and ask the guys at the dock to help you make the call. After a shower, we headed out for the Benjamin’s. We had a great reach under motor and headsail and passed the only cruise ship operating on the Great Lakes. Not a Carnival cruise type of ship but pretty big for the Great Lakes and the tight channels in this area. There are a few entrances from the south side with the east one being the widest and easiest; we chose the centre which looked clear with only a few menacing granite rocks reminding us to take care with our navigation. On our way here one island looked pretty much like another when you are new to the area. But with good charts and a hand bearing compass and referencing everything to our GPS on our laptop charts we could determine that certain islands weren’t what we thought they were and were able to identify each correctly and found our way without any trouble. I guess the courses I took so long ago were paying off and it is always good to be able to verify these things with multiple sources. Once in, we headed over to anchor close by our friends. This was such a nice spot so we stayed here for two days. The pink granite added a special charm to this spot. From here we took the narrow cut out to the west that we’d checked out in our dingy the previous day. It was narrow but plenty deep with the tips of big rocks piercing the water on each side. Once well clear and into the main channel we turned north and had a nice headsail reach up to Eagle Island. Rounding the point we rolled up the sail again and motored through the gap of the two small rocky islets over to the anchorage. We dropped the hook again and spent the rest of the day relaxing with our friends. (continued on page 7)

The flag of the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons is rectangular in shape and consists of five blue and four white alternating stripes of equal width with a white-bordered red maple leaf super-imposed on the centre.

The pennant of the Windsor Power and Sail Squadron consists of a red circle on the hoist half, which is the international symbol for the number one. The outer half of the pennant consists of the nine blue and white bars of the National Flag. The combination is intended to signal Windsor as the first Canadian Power Squadron. Immediately inside of the hoist is a vertical gold bar, signifying Windsor squadron having attained its 50th year in existence.

(continued from page 4) In the morning we headed out for Little Current on a nice broad reach down the McBean Channel. While keeping north of Fox we headed ESE until we cleared Bournot Reef off of Bournot Island and turned southwards to pass Bears Back Island on our way to Little Current. Mike and Tina were going home today but first they wanted to do a little camping at Kilarney Park. Once we finished getting fuel and ice and a nice hot shower we headed out to wait for a bridge opening. Twenty minutes later we passed through on our way back to Haywood to spend the night. In the morning we were off heading north to Frazer Point and Baie Fin and the Okeechobee Lodge. Okeechobee is a private lodge owned by Wacky Wheatley who has friends in the Windsor Yacht Club which was the group we were traveling with. It is a beautiful place right on the point with about 20 private wells for his friends when they come to visit. Every other year the club has a rendezvous here and a potluck dinner hosted by the Wacky one. It is always a good time. The next day we formed a flotilla of rubber boats and motored up the bay to Maryanne’s Cove. A friend was anchored here and you had to be there as they watched a herd of dinghies heading straight for their boat. We couldn’t be sure if they were happy for the company or horrified at having 50 guests drop in for drinks on a 33 foot boat, all at the same time! Most of the flotilla was back at the lodge by the time we left and half way back we got caught in a squall. The rest of the trip we bucked headwinds with waves breaking over the bow but by staying close to the lee of the cliffs along the shore we avoided the worst and made it home safe but wet. We had changed and dried off by the time the rain ended and were getting ready to take the big boat to fetch the last couple when they rounded the point under sunny skies. The next day we were to start heading home. (End part three of four...)
