It‟s important to understand the various ways in which customers can acquire Windows desktop
licenses. Below you will find a summary of the Microsoft Windows desktop licensing channels.
Ways to Buy Windows Desktop Licenses
I have a Volume Licensing. I can buy a naked PC from OEM.
I am an education customer with CASA / MSDN Academic. I can buy naked PCs from OEMs.
GGWA is perpetual and can be transferred from one PC to another
I can buy naked PC and then buy GGWA to cover later
Volume Licensing only cover Windows OS upgrade licenses
CASA & MSDN AA cover Windows Upgrades only.
GGWA is „tied‟ to the device on which software is first installed. Customers may not transfer the license without that device.
GGWA is for existing PC. Customers have to buy OEM licenses with the new PC.
