Executive SummaryIn the next 12 months, most Indian CIOs (almost 80%) plan to upgrade to

Windows 7. The perception of the OS is exceedingly positive among CIOs, with an

overwhelming majority rating Windows 7 as “excellent” or “satisfactory”.

In terms of key constraints, application compatibility and hardware limitations are

the areas that concern our CIOs the most, while budget does not seem to be an

apprehension for most of the CIO community.

Windows Vista users are looking at the speed and stability of Windows 7 as the key

drivers for upgrade, while XP users are looking for better features, performance

and security. Both sets of users are looking forward to the power management

enhancements and the improved UI of Windows 7.

Introduction Windows 7 was launched in India towards the end of 2009. It was well-received and

quickly gathered interest amongst the CIO community.

About six months after Windows 7 was announced, the CIO Association of India

(CAI) and Microsoft collaborated on a survey that sought to understand the state

of Windows 7 Adoption in India. Commissioned in August 2010, this survey seeks

to get a sense from the CIO community on their organization’s plans to deploy

Windows 7, as well as understand the consideration set for CIOs to decide on

upgrading to Windows 7.

CAI, India’s largest independent association of CIOs, has members from some of the

most prominent organizations across the country. This survey was sent to the CAI

member community and received 174 responses.

Duration: The survey was launched on August 10, 2010 and responses were

accepted till August 13, 2010.

Reach: CIOs across India responded to the survey. A list of the respondent

companies is presented in Appendix A. 174 CIOs across India responded with

complete responses.

Survey responses and trends Q 1. Based on what you have seen or heard of Windows 7, what is the overall rating you would give Windows 7? The question presented the respondents with an option of rating Windows 7 as

“excellent”, “satisfactory” or “poor”.

The perception of Windows 7 has been very favorable with 97.7% of the cios rating

Windows7 as “excellent” or “satisfactory”. Of these, 54.6% of the CIOs indicated that

Windows 7 is an “excellent” Operating System.

Further, 43.10% of CIOs polled indicated that they thought Windows 7 is “satisfactory”,

based on their perception of Windows 7.

A small number of respondents – 2.3% – however had reservations about Windows 7,

giving it a “poor” rating.

Q 2. When do you plan to deploy Windows 7?Windows 7 seems to be making strong in-roads in organisations across India, with

36.21% of the CIOs telling us that the Windows 7 deployment was already in progress

across their enterprises.

A sizeable number of CIOs have already evaluated the benefits of the new OS and

have plans to deploy the same within their organizations in the next one year. Of these,

18.97% plan to deploy Windows 7 in the next 6 months and another 23.56% are looking

to plan their deployment in the 6-12 month window after the survey.

Further, almost 80% of the CIOs in the respondent group are planning to deploy Windows 7 in their organizations within the next 12 months.

Among the remaining respondents, 8.62% of the CIOs have plans to deploy Windows 7 in 12-24 months A miniscule number of 0.57% of the CIOs who responded, indicated plans of adopting Windows 7 only after 2 years.

The number of CIOs with “no plans” of migrating to Windows 7 at this point is 12.07%.

Among the organizations where deployment is already “in progress”, 71% of the CIOs have rated Windows 7 as “excellent”, while 27% have rated it as “satisfactory”.

Contrasting the above, against organizations that have no plans to deploy the OS at this time, 24% of the CIOs in such organizations have termed it “excellent” and 67% have given it a “satisfactory” rating.

Among the organizations where deployment is already in progress, 71% of CIOs have rated Windows 7 as “excellent”, while 27% have rated it “satisfactory”.

Q 3. Has your organization evaluated Windows 7?

We asked the respondents about the extent of their evaluation of Windows 7. 31.03% of our CIOs have already commissioned an extensive evaluation of the system. They have either run a pilot or PoC to evaluate Windows 7. 47.3% of the CIOs have commissioned a basic testing of the OS, with their IT teams having reviewed the OS.

The interest in Windows 7 is evident in the numbers, which indicate that out of the remaining CIOs, 14.97% have indicated plans to evaluate it soon. Only 6.9% of CIOs have indicated that they have no plans to test/evaluate Windows 7.

Among the organizations where deployment is in progress, 52.38% have tested the OS extensively, while 44.44% have undergone basic testing.

Among the organizations where deployment is expected in the next six months, 27.27% have evaluated the system extensively, whereas 48.48% have implemented basic testing.

Q 4. What, in your opinion, are the key constraints to upgrade to Windows 7? (Please rate criteria on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 being – constraint and 5 – big constraint)

This question throws light on the challenges that CIOs face, while considering an upgrade to Windows 7. We asked CIOs to rate the severity of the following constraints – budget constraints, migration costs, application compatibility, testing requirements, hardware limitations, business case /ROI, and licensing concerns, in order to determine the ones with the most impact.

On questioning the target group, we learnt that paramount among the CIOs’ concerns, was application compatibility, with 47.13% of our CIOs rating it as a big constraint (27.59% rated it at 4 and 19.54% gave it a rating of 5).

There seems to be a lack of awareness about Windows 7’s XP Mode , which provides XP

application compatibility – as one of the respondents put it, “Lack of out-of-box XP compatibility for applications is a huge, huge barrier.”

Interestingly, among the organizations that have tested Windows 7 extensively, only 12.96% have said that application compatibility is a big constraint, while 31.48% have said it was no constraint.

Looking at the CIOs with no plans to deploy Windows 7 at this point, more than 60% of them felt that application compatibility is a big constraint (Rating 4 – 24% and 5 – 38%).Hardware limitations is viewed as another big constraint among the CIOs with no plans to deploy at this time, with 48% of them rating it as a level 4 or 5 constraint.

Encouragingly, even during these less-than-perfect economic conditions, most CIOs don’t feel that budgets are a big constraint for the move to Windows 7, with 32.76% of our respondents saying that it is no constraint.

We gave the respondents the option to mention other constraints that are preventing the adoption of Windows 7. Here are some that were mentioned by the CIOs:

Q 6. What according to you are the key factors/ reasons for upgrading to Windows 7?

Dissatisfaction with Windows Vista and the fact that Windows XP is nearing end of support seem to be two important drivers for the adoption of Windows 7.

Many responses included CIOs who were appreciative of better features, performance, and security vis à vis the existing Windows XP systems.

Others using Windows Vista were positive about Windows 7’s stability and speed. Some other influencing factors included the need for an OS that enables quick start-up and an optimum utilization of system resources.

“We had a performance issue on our Windows Vista preloaded OS. We understood from Microsoft that Windows 7 is reliable, fast and secure, and that they have eliminated all the drawbacks of Vista. As a part of our Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, we can have standardized Windows 7 as the base OS group-wide, irrespective of the OS loaded by the PC manufacturer (OEM).” - Subbarao Hegde, CTO,

A significant number of CIOs were enthusiastic of the virtualization features of the OS.

The fact that Windows 7 is IPV6-ready also seems to be an influencing factor.

In addition, power management enhancements seemed to surface prominently amongst the top few reasons for considering Windows 7.

Moving away from the technology benefits, the “visually appealing” interface seems to have been a strong influencer as well, with a significant number of CIOs commenting on the user-friendly graphics.

In a quest to move with the times and keep up with the future, our CIOs at large indicated that they saw the migration to Windows 7 as inevitable, even in those organizations where it is not immediately planned.

Q 7. Is your organization evaluating Desktop Virtualization solutions as part of your desktop strategy? The landscape over the next few years could change substantially as an increasing number of CIOs are seeing value in, and actively evaluating the potential presented by, Desktop Virtualization (DV).

This question seeks to understand the importance placed by CIOs on DV, which presents multiple advantages to organizations today – namely, opex costs, centralized management, faster adoption, the ability to overcome hardware limitations and so on.

52.47% of our respondents echoed this sentiment as they agreed that they are evaluating DV as part of their desktop strategy.
