BARTHOLOMEW PARK POOL OPENS WITH A SPLASHby Martin Luecke, WPNA President

It’s a luau Hawaiian Party at the Grand Opening of Bartholomew Swimming Pool, Saturday June 14 at 10AM. This is the culmination of many years waiting and working and waiting some more, and getting a little lucky. It is the way of the universe to give what is needed, and although this is just a swimming pool complex, it feels good to fi nally call something this good “ours”.

WPNA will ceremoniously hold its monthly meeting at the Grand Opening, but not really. The Mayor and City Council will be in attendance, along with the media. Speeches will be given. Tears will be shed. And then there will be the University of Texas Junior Diving Program, with special guest Cap-tain Splash. And wait ‘til you see the Sink-ronised swim team performance. Not to be missed.

And here’s the new news: It will be a free day at the pool! Kudos to Council Members Laura Mor-rison and Kathy Tovo for sponsoring and passing the resolution at council.

HEB and Austin Parks will host the party with beach balls and Hawaiian leis and snacks and sun screen. And WPNA will be giving away our super new hats and t-shirts for donations to the Shade Project and the Reagan High Scholarship, so bring your wallet with your swim gear.

This will be the biggest neighborhood party since our 30th anniversary event, thanks to the generosity of the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department and the leadership of Laura Morrison. I hope there will be room for all of us in the water!

School Committee UpdatesMeghan Dougherty, Chair of the School Committee

In May, for teacher appreciation week, we delivered baskets of mandarin oranges and Hershey’s kisses along with thank you signs for the teachers to the fi ve schools in our attendance zone: Blanton, Harris, Andrews, Pearce and Reagan.

Our efforts to fundraise for a Reagan High School Scholarship are well underway, and we are about halfway to meeting our goal of $2000 to award a graduating senior of the class of 2015. We had a successful event at Nomad and we’d like to thank Nomad and Paco’s Tacos as contributing neighborhood businesses. IBC bank has also expressed an interest in partnering with us, so we are very excited about the interest this has generated. In addition, we’d like to express heartfelt thanks to the individual neighbors in Windsor Park who have contributed most of what we have raised so far. The generosity of this neighborhood truly makes me glad to call it home!

We plan on attending an Austin ISD board meeting in the next few weeks to advocate in the new superintendent search. We continue to believe the most important contribution we can make to the neighborhood is to advocate for more resources in neighborhood schools. We envision a neighborhood where school and neighborhood events are one and the same, and there is a strong relationship with regular communication between the two. We would like AISD to hire a superintendent who will institute programs to strengthen neighborhood schools and stop diverting funds to programs across town or charter schools. Please remember to individually express your opinions about the superintendent search on the AISD website: http://www.austinisd.org/superintendent-search/engagement.

We will be at the June pool party, and by then we plan on having Windsor Park hats available as a gift for your donations to the Reagan Scholarship Fund. We also welcome any comments or questions.

Neighborhood Schools Updates

Harris Elementary Gloria Cano, School Counselor

Fifth graders and their parents enjoyed our end of the school year celebration on May 29. Students were honored for academics and extra curricular participation such as choir, safety patrol, and cheerleading. This is always a fun event where students get to remember the good times they had during their years at Harris. We send them off to Middle School with good thoughts and best wishes for their future as they continue on their educational journey!

Students enjoyed learning outside of the classroom in May with various fi eld trips. PK went to Crowe’s Nest Farm. Second grade had fun at Zilker Park Nature Center and Fourth graders learned all about Bears at the AMC Theater. Thank you again ATPE for helping fund these trips and all the support you continue to provide our students, teachers and staff with your time and fi nancial contributions. Thanks to WPNA for the treats during Teacher Appreciation Week and Memorial United Methodist for snacks for our students during testing. We appreciate all you do for is here at Harris. We look forward to our continuing partnership for the years to come. As the school year comes to a close we just want to remind our neighbors to watch out for our neighborhood kids as they enjoy their summer. Watch your speed and help us keep them safe as they walk and play in the area. Until next school year, happy summer!

LBJEC and LASA High SchoolsKaren Donelan, Librarian

Another very important event for both schools has been the selection of Teacher of the Year for our campuses. Mr. David Walker was chosen the LASA Teacher of the Year, and Mr. Nick Dellas was chosen LBJEC Teacher of the Year. Both gentlemen are outstanding Science teachers. In addition to that honor, Mr. Nick Dellas was then selected the AISD High School Teacher of the Year! Mr. Dellas has a Master‘s degree in Kinesiology with a specialization in Exercise Physiology from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor‘s degree in Health Science with an emphasis in Athletic Training from Grand Valley State University. He started the Anatomy and Physiology program here at LBJEC, and has inspired many students to pursue medical and science careers. Congratulations to our fi ne award-winning teachers!

For those students planning to attend our campuses in the Fall, remember that attendance is one of the most important elements of a good education. Have a great summer and we look forward to see all students on August 25th!

John H. Reagan Early College High SchoolLauren Kozlowski, AmeriCorps Family Resource Center Assistant

Greetings from John H. Reagan Early College High School!

May has been a busy month at Reagan! The beginning of the month included both state standardized testing, and testing for students enrolled in Advanced Placement courses. The students held up well under the testing. Reagan’s early college high school students also completed their semester in Austin Community College courses this month.

On May 1st and 2nd, our dance team, the Soul Strutters, performed at their spring shows. The following week, the Reagan choir put on their spring concert. Reagan also had one of its student athletes compete in the UIL State Track Meet. Big events yet to come include prom and graduation. Prom will be held on May 24th and graduation for our seniors, also right around the corner, will take place on June 4th. Congratulations to all of our students fi nishing another school year, but especially to our graduating class of 2014!

We are always looking for new volunteers and business partners. Please contact our Parent Support Specialist Richard Castillo at (512) 414-7622 if you would like to learn about how to get involved at Reagan!

May 2014 Mueller UpdateRick Krivoniak

Looks like the opening of the Torchy’s Tacos at 51st Street and Berkman Drive has been delayed until September. Designing, permitting and building a commercial kitchen are not fast processes.

At its May 22, 2014 meeting, the Austin City Council was anticipated to pass a resolution directing the City Manager to work with stakeholders to create a parking management district for the Mueller development. Catellus & consultant Nelson Nygaard, and the City’s Economic Development and Transportation Departments have been working for over 18 months on the parking issue for Mueller. The recommendation out of that work was to create a Parking & Transportation Management District that would implement, over time and as needed, various programs involving public & private/off-street parking coordination, on-street parking management, car & bike sharing, wayfi nding & signage, metered parking with shared revenue, residential permit parking, and of course, parking enforcement.

“It’s Happening At Mueller,” the 2014 Community Report by Catellus is now available in print form at Mueller Central.

The next Robert Mueller Municipal Airport Plan Implementation Advisory Commission meeting is Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 6PM in Meeting Room 1 of the Carver Library, 1161 Angelina Street. Please send Mueller-related questions & comments to [email protected].

Windsor Park Enters the 2014 Habitat ChallengeJeanette Swenson

At the May meeting, WPNA voted to join the 2014 Wildlife Austin / National Wildlife Austin Habitat Challenge. If you haven’t yet certifi ed your yard as an urban wildlife habitat, now is the time. To add your yard, certify it between April 15, 2014 and November 15, 2014. The least expensive way is to request a waiver from Wildlife Austin, fi ll it out and return it to Wildlife Austin. To request a waiver, contact [email protected] or call 512-974-9450. If you have already certifi ed your yard, there is an upgrade that you can do for your yard. Certify your yard as pollinator friendly for bees, butterfl ies, beetles and moths. Request, complete, and return the form to [email protected]. It is free and counts as a part of the Habitat Ch allenge. Questions: contact [email protected] or call 512-524-1973.

June 2014 Yard of the MonthSara Jane Lee

The June winners are Jim and Shirley Rhoades of 1607 Chatham Avenue. Although they have lived on Chatham over 50 years, they have recently redone their front yard. Because they were tired of trying to keep grass alive and wanted to reduce their water use, they had their lawn removed. Last winter the landscapers removed the grass and added the landscaping materials over several days. In late March they came back to plant the plants in the mulched area. Jim likes desert landscapes; Shirley likes greenery. Both are pleased with the result.

Like Gaul, their yard is divided into three parts with curving metal edging separating the parts. On the left, near the driveway, crushed granite is spread around a mature Bur Oak and the mulched bed surrounding it. This oak grew from a sapling that Shirley’s mother gave them. She had grown the sapling from an acorn in her yard. The small bed holds Amaryllis, African Iris and other greenery. The amaryllis came from Shirley’s grandmother and another plant came from her aunt. It belongs to that popular species. “I knew what it was when I got it.”

The middle part of the yard is river rock accented with larger rocks and Purple Fountain Grass. Near the house they have pots containing Lambs Ear, Mother of Thousands, Gnarly Echeveria, Moonstones, and Silver Pony Foot.

On the right there is a large, mulched bed with Indigo Salvia, Texas Sage, Esperanza or Yellow Bells, Hybrid Esperanza or Orange Bells, Red Sage, and a Vitex tree. There is also a small, mulched bed containing Bicolor Iris, Butterfl y Iris, Variegated Flax Lily, Leather Leaf Mahonia, and Red Star Cordyline.

They were inspired by other yards they had seen and advise others wanting to change their yard to look at many other yards to see what they like. They also suggest getting a professional to critique your ideas.

Mr. and Mrs. Rhoades will receive a $50.00 gift certifi cate from our sponsor, Shoal Creek Nursery, 2710 Hancock Drive. By the way, they nominated themselves. If they had not, we might not have found their yard.

Do you like a certain yard, or yards, in the neighborhood? Tell us. We cannot visit every yard in the neighborhood every month. We may not have seen your great yard. Don’t be humble. We love to get nominations. To nominate a yard or yards, e-mail me at [email protected], call 928-0681 or write WPNA YOMC, P O Box 16183, Austin, Texas 78761.

Parks UpdateJeanette Swenson

See Martin’s front page article about the biggest June park event: the re-opening of the Bartholomew Park pools and slide on June 7 and the neighborhood party on June 14!

However, much goes on in our almost 60-acre park.

In preparation for the pool opening, Parks and Recreation is doing park upgrades and clean-up. The pool parking lot has been re-surfaced and a new basketball court has been installed adjacent to the pool.

Mark your calendars for the June 7 National Trails Day event at Bartholomew. It is Austin Parks Foundation’s fi nal work day of the year, and we will be mulching the landscaping and trees in the splash pad area. Sign up at Austinparks.org to volunteer to spread mulch.

In preparation, WP Park Stewards have weeded and PARD has treated for fi re ants.

AmeriCorps volunteers, led by Mary Elizabeth Hopkins and WP Park Steward Janne Zochert did the May bamboo clearing at the east end of the park. We will need volunteers to cut bamboo in June, July, and August.

Notice the change in the heading - it’s PARKS! In January, 2013 the City of Austin purchased a 2 acre tract on Patton Lane, which will eventually become a much-needed pocket park for the north end of the neighborhood. The WP Park Committee will be meeting in June to talk about possible uses for the tract. Cesar Benavides has been instrumental in acquisition of the land. Another tract of land that was transferred to PARD is the old pecan grove at Old Manor Road. It’s very undeveloped and overgrown, and development is probably far in the future, but we will also talk about possibilities for that tract. A third park consideration is a badly needed dog park in Windsor Park. WP resident Ali Bagheri would like us to explore a dog park option for the neighborhood. Currently, there is space for a dog park in the Bartholomew Park master plan, but it’s not currently available. If you would like to participate in the options for parks, a meeting will be scheduled in June. Contact me if you are interested, and I will include you on the meeting notice: [email protected] .

As always, if you would like to join Windsor Park Park Stewards on Friday mornings for a couple of hours, please contact me, and I will add you to the email list.

Windsor Park Community Garden

The Windsor Park Community Garden is accepting annual memberships at this time. This would be a good time to rent one of

several vacant spots, evict those pesky off-season weeds, gussy up the borders, and

begin soil amendment. The Sunshine Gardens Plant Sale is only six weeks away, so it’s

really not too early to imagine palate-fl ipping homegrown tomatoes and boisterously green

squash mounds!

Furthermore, WPCG may be in the process of establishing a relationship with East Side Compost Pedallers; that’s yet another reason to anticipate a most excellent spring at your

local community garden.

Join the WPCG Yahoo Group ([email protected]), or directly

contact our coordinator Pat ([email protected]). The annual fee is reasonable, and a few

volunteer hours are required as well.
