A ll who know me know of my love affair with the Porsche 944 series. The 944 is my favorite Porsche, I admit it;

yes the Porsche 944 is not the best, or fastest Porsche. It certainly is not the most prestigious Porsche. They do possess excellent handling, great styl-ing and a friendly (but growing) price tag. Yes, on rare occasion I am snubbed by a few snooty types; but the opinion of such people is of little con-sequence. I know what I like, and I like 944s. This has lead me to having owned four, and still owning two. Why four? Well I started with a 1985 944, then wanting more power I bought a 1987 944S, which lead me to buying a more powerful 1990 944 S2 and fi-nally a more powerful 1987 944 Turbo (951). The more astute may notice a pattern.

This story -- in three installments -- is not about my string of 944s; instead, they are about buying, breaking, and finally fixing, my 944 Turbo. Those with a long memory may recall that at Streets of Willow (in 2013), I left a large streak of oil containing small pieces of the number one rod and pis-ton, as well as a large portion of the

block, oil pan and front cover; or more bluntly, I blew the thing up.

The story begins with me wanting a Por-sche 944 Turbo. I also have always wanted to buy a car in some dis-tant location and then savor the drive home. When I found a very clean 944 Turbo in Bend Oregon; I snapped it up. Flying by airline to Bend turned out to be a con-voluted affair. First a flight from Bakersfield to San Francisco. A sec-ond flight from San Francisco to Portland. As I watched Bend go under the right wing I wished they could just let me out there. Finally, (as rain closed in) a third flight, back tracking to the south and I was in Bend. The seller met

me at the airport in a SUV as it was raining and he wanted me to first see the car while it was clean.

We arrived at the seller’s home (an up-scale condo) and uncov-ered the Porsche. It looked great! I drove it for a few miles and fell hard for this red beauty. The car showed some wear that appeals to me; I call it the patina of a well driven Porsche. It was not a concourse queen. The only real faults were that it needed a window regulator and had a small exhaust leak where the tailpipe was rusting as it en-tered the muffler; nothing the boys at R2 Racing couldn't fix. I was so very glad that I had negotiated the deal prior to driving the car; after driving it, I was willing to pay far more than the negoti-ated price.

After a bit of paperwork and pay-ing the man; we wrapped the original wheels (yes it had a two sets, one

stock and one nice 17 inch upgrade) in a tarp and stuck them in the hatch. By now it was past 2:00 PM and raining, the weather forecast predicted heavy snow. I had reservations at a Super 8 for an overnight stop in Klamath Falls so I knew the race was on. I had not eaten since 4:30 AM so I needed to top my tank as well as the car's. I stopped at a Dairy Queen in South Bend where I ducked in for some very slow, fast food (to go). It was a quarter of a mile to a Chevron station which proved a great opportunity to top off the car. In Oregon, they have a strange law pro-

hibiting a person from pumping their own gas; an attendant must do that. As a nice young lady slowly filled the tank (which seemed to take forever) I cautiously watched the weather. I fi-nally left Bend at around 3:00 PM, in light rain. I escaped the city and pro-ceeded down Highway 97; while munching my now cold, and rather yucky, hamburger. I was 770 miles from home but a mere 140 miles to Klamath Falls. It grew wetter as I trav-eled south and ascended into the mountains. While on wet pavement I passed a truck, when the turbo kicked in the rear wheels broke loose. Some-thing to remember if it snowed. Then somewhere south of Gilchrist, it started to snow.

For the remainder of the day, I drove in snow, and on slushy roads. This slowed my pace and it was long after dark, when I finally pulled into Klamath Falls. That night I watched the weather; Bend now had several inches of snow. As I considered din-ner, I wondered what tomorrow would bring. Deciding to keep it simple, din-ner and gas were both from the adja-cent Pilot Travel Center. I wanted only the best so I ordered a Subway sandwich, with an extra sandwich for the next day.

All through the night I worried about being caught in the snow and stranded in Oregon. I knew if I could get as far as the Central Valley, I would be home free. I wanted to leave at first light so I left before the hotel breakfast was served; coffee from the adjoining Pilot and a break-fast bar would have to do; more dash-board dining as I headed south. Of course it began to snow, and the race was on. I must beat the storm to the central valley. It was 142 miles from Klamath Falls to Redding.

As I progressed south the snow turned to rain and then stopped. I was

passing through a rain shadow. The nice weather was something to be en-joyed, so I made a pit stop at the Grass Lake Rest Area. Once there, I made a

late breakfast out of my Subway sand-wich, visited the facility, and hit the road. As I drove south it occurred to me that I should have taken a picture; Oh well, thought I, the next stop will do. The next stop came quickly, a scenic turnout with a great view of Mount

Shasta. Unfortunately Mount Shasta was shrouded in clouds and I could see storm clouds in the south boiling over the mountains. The respite was

over and I plunged back into the rain. At Weed California I joined Interstate 5. Once in the valley an-other pit stop, this one rainy, at a rest area just north of Lake Shasta. I was much relieved to have left the mountains behind, The Central Val-ley would be easy, wet or dry. I checked the car and noticed the rusted tailpipe was now cracked, just ahead of the muffler; not a prob-lem.

Driving south I crossed some rough patches of road. The exhaust note grew louder (it sounded nice, I liked it) but I did not like the sound of the muffler banging around in the back. At Elkhorn Rest Area, just north of Sacramento I wrestled the

muffler off of its mounting hooks; I threw it in the back and was grateful that I was able to do this in the dry. I passed through Sacramento traffic with a very noisy exhaust; people stared.

To be continued…

W ith a last minute invitation for Porsches from Galpin for their 6th Annual Auto Show, the PCA rallied and provided quite a few different examples of the sto-ried Porsche brand. The reason for including a larg-

er number of Porsches at this auto show was in honor of Galpin being awarded the opportunity to build a Porsche dealership in Santa Clarita. The dealership will be displacing the current Maz-da/Subaru dealership and is planned for completion in 2019.

For the lucky guests of the Galpin Auto Show, we were granted wrist bands that provided access into their hospitality suite contained within the area that hosts the Aston Martin area. The breakfast and lunch spreads were very delicious augment-ed by the tasty car scenery both indoors and out.

Each parking lot was filled with a different car specialty. Gal-pin also had some special displays inside their showrooms—including multiple Ferrari F40s, new and newest Ford GTs, an Emory Motorsports special, Aston Martins and an Entourage Lincoln Continental. The Porsche contingent was well represent-ed with both new and old examples.

We also had a chance to chat with Joe, the future General Manager of the Porsche dealership. He is a gearhead and wants to have a very inviting dealership experience and hopes to have good involvement with our club.

complete, I asked if I could test drive it and he said that I could have it on my lunch hour the next day. I took him up on his offer and picked it up after breaking for lunch. I drove it for almost an hour and got back just in time to return to work. It was nothing like the Sprite. It was comfortable, it had power and it handled much better. I was hooked. The next day I called and told him that I wanted it and the day after that, it kicked the Sprite out of the gar-age.

That Porsche was much more reli-able then the Sprite could hope to be. I did nothing but routine maintenance on it the whole time I had it. Except for once.

It is now 1970 and, having just completed Air Force basic training, I was at Chanute Air Force Base in Illi-nois for tech school. There, we were able to have our own cars so I called my mom and asked if she would drive the Porsche to the base. I said that I could pay for her return flight home and after thinking about it for a mo-ment, she said that she would.

Before leaving, she called and said that she would go to see her relatives near Chicago before coming down to Chanute. After the second day of her trip, I got a call saying that the car broke down just east of Amarillo, Tex-as. She had it towed back to a Por-sche/Audi/ VW dealership where she was informed the engine case had

cracked below the oil cooler mount. They thought they could weld it so she said to go ahead. She spent the night in Amarillo and picked up the car the next day. She made it about an hour away before she saw a large plume of smoke coming from the back of the car. After getting the car back to the dealership, she was told that the case was not repairable and that they would have to replace it and rebuild the en-gine. She agreed and flew home, leav-ing the car with them.

After arriving home, she informed me of what had happened and said that they would call her when it was ready. One of the things I told her to do was make sure that every part they replaced was returned to me with the car.

It was 30 days before she got the call to come and pick up my Porsche. Upon arriving at the dealership, she took care of the paperwork and headed for Chicago. I finally got the car two days later and after saying “thanks” and “good bye” she returned to Chica-go with her brother's family and got a flight home.

There's more to this story but I'll finish the above part first. After com-pleting tech school, I was to be sta-tioned at what used to be George Air Force Base near Victorville, Ca. I had 15 days of leave, so I headed home and, after arriving, I inspected the parts that were in the boxes and discovered that the crankshaft had a huge gouge in one of the rod journals. The only thing that could cause a gouge that size would be a broken connecting rod. However, no connecting rods had been replaced. As the engine had been leak-ing during the drive home, I removed it and took it apart to re-seal it. What I found on two of the parts in place of proper gaskets were pages from a magazine cut to fit the part. I got a sec-ond opinion on the damage to the crankshaft and, satisfied that I was right, I decided to do something about it. I took photos of the crankshaft and gaskets and, along with a detailed let-ter, I sent copies to Porsche, the Texas Better Business Bureau and the deal-ership. I never heard from the dealer-ship but I did hear from the Better Busi-

I have always been interested in sports cars although I can't recall what triggered the desire to some-day own one. The first opportunity

came in 1966 when I saw a car for sale that I was interested in. It was a 1961 Austin Healey Mk.1 “Bugeye” Sprite. I bought the car in late '66 and, after driving and working on it often, I knew there was something better.

In early 1967, my brother-in-law and I went to Riverside International Raceway to watch the sports car rac-es. We were parked out in the boonies and as we walked across the bridge to the infield, two sweet-sounding and sexy cars drove by. I needed to find out what they were so we waited in the garage area until the end of the race. After observing them pull into a garage nearby, we went over and asked what they were. The driver, who had just exited the car, said in a heavy German accent that they were Porsche Carrera 6's. Those were the sexiest cars I had ever seen and their sound was amaz-ing.

I pretty much forgot about the event until just after graduating from high school in '68. I was working at an auto parts store and one of our cus-tomers owned a foreign car garage nearby. One day his head mechanic came by to pick up some parts. He was driving a 1962 Porsche 356 B Su-per Cabriolet and it had a “for sale” sign on it. After his transaction was

ness Bureau. They informed me that the dealership was under investigation for wrongdoing and poor business practices and they would get back to me with the results of the investigation. It was about two months before I heard from Porsche and I was surprised to hear that they reprimanded them and then terminated their license to sell or service Porsche automobiles.

Now to the rest of the story. On my way home from tech school, I was on the Turner Turnpike in Oklahoma when I saw what appeared to be a Porsche parked on the shoulder. The hood was up and two attractive young ladies were standing there looking perplexed. I noticed the California license plate on the green '69 912 and pulled over to see if I could help. After introducing ourselves, I asked what was wrong and they said that it just suddenly quit running. I offered to help and, after looking around for a moment, I saw that a wire had come off of the coil. The terminal fit loosely so I got the pliers from their tool kit and gave it a squeeze. After re-attaching the wire, I asked them to try and start it, and it immediately fired up. With wide eyes and big smiles, they thanked me and said that I was their hero. After closing the hood, I asked where they were go-ing and they told me they were headed home to Riverside, Ca. I said I was going to Palmdale and asked if they would like to caravan the rest of the

way. They agreed and away we went. I needed gas first so after filling up,

I asked if one of the girls would like to ride with me. The driver said that she would and wasted no time getting in the car. Her friend drove the Porsche until she needed to stop for gas. Then they switched and we were off once again. When we reached Flagstaff, Az. we were all ready to eat and rest so we got off the freeway and found a motel. After getting our rooms and freshening up, we met for dinner and went back to their room. We talked for a couple hours and then I returned to my room and got some sleep.

The next morning, after breakfast, we packed up and got on the road. Jackie, the owner of the 912 rode with me until the first potty break and then switched again. With her friend Steph-anie now in my passenger seat, we headed for home. After a stop in Vic-torville to let Stephanie back into their car, we said our 'good-byes” and went our separate ways. We had exchanged addresses and phone numbers and I kept in touch with Jackie for a couple of years before not hearing from her again.

Now it gets even more interesting. It's 1980 and I was between jobs for a short time. While working at Northrop, a friend had told me about a beer he really liked but that they didn't sell it here in California. So, having nothing better to do, I borrowed my mom's

1979 Dodge Colt hatchback, removed the rear seat, and headed east. I finally found what I was looking for in Joplin, Missouri and, after buying all that one liquor store had, I headed home.

Heading west, about an hour east of Flagstaff, Az., I was cruising along in the slow lane on the freeway when I was passed by a green Porsche 912 with California plates. I thought the plate looked familiar so I sped up and got along side to see if I could see the driver. After being along side for a mo-ment, the driver looked in my direction and her eyes opened wide and her jaw dropped. I knew right away that it was Jackie and with a smile and a wave, I motioned to go to the side of the road. Fortunately, there was a rest stop close by and after pulling off, we both left our cars and looked at each other in disbelief. We couldn't believe what had just happened. Ten years after our first meeting, we met again on the highway. We talked for a short time and then, as it was getting a little late, we headed for Flagstaff and, again, stayed the night. We met for dinner and talked for quite a while before fi-nally heading off to our rooms to get some sleep. The next morning, after breakfast, we talked more and then headed for home. We followed each other back to Victorville where, after stopping, exchanging phone numbers and saying “good-bye”, we went our

separate ways.

O ur annual Rich Pare Photo Rally was held on October 21, 2017. For those who are not familiar with a photo rally, it is a set of route instructions and a set of photographs. The photographs are marked with a letter. The goal is to match the photograph

with the route instruction and the team with the most correct answers is the winner. It is not necessary to drive a Porsche so a van full of people might just have an advantage!!

Our starting point this year was the Greenhouse Café in Lancaster. Although it was a small turnout, the drive was incredible winding through some little known roads of the Antelope Valley. It took most of us about 3 hours. Fortunately, I was the passenger with a resident historian of the Antelope Valley, John Quick. So not only was he familiar with the roads, he was able to give me the historical perspective of where we were and some little known facts of the area. Some of the landmarks that we saw were the plant where the stealth bomber was built along with the local pris-on!! So, if you think we had an advantage, guess again, we came in next to last!!
