Wind Energy is a form of kinetic energy because it involves the movement of molecules and substances.

WIND ENERGY

A wind turbine turns the Kinetic Wind Energy into a form of

Electrical energy.

The energy in wind comes from solar radiation.

WIND ENERGY

Wind is measured by the Beaufort scale.

A device that measures wind speed is called an anemometer.

WIND ENERGY

Wind blows all over the planet, but mountainous and coastal areas have more steady and reliable winds than other places.

Local winds are affects by changes in the shape of the land. It can blow fast and strong across the open prairie, but slows down and

changes directions when the land surface is uneven.

THE BEST WIND

Adjusting the pitch or the angle of the blades can help to capture the energy from the wind most efficiently

increasing the turbine’s electrical output.

(But there is a limit…. Too little or too much pitch can decrease the efficiency of the turbine)

Because sometimes the wind blows stronger, a wind turbine must adapt itself to the prevailing wind speed to operate most efficiently. There are two basic approaches used to control a wind turbine in high wind speeds: pitch‐control and stall‐control. In pitch‐controlled turbines, an anemometer mounted atop the nacelle constantly checks the wind speed and sends signals to a pitch actuator, adjusting the angle of the blades to capture the energy

from the wind most efficiently.

BLADE PITCH

As of now, Wind Energy produces only 1% of the total electric generated in the United States.

If a 250lb linebacker was running towards you, why do you get out of the way?

Because in your mind, you know that this object has a lot of ENERGY in result of its mass and motion.

Some mass in the blade will increase the efficiency, but too much will slow it down.

MASS OF BLADES ON A WIND TURBINE

One again, moderation is the key.

Blades designed with to great of surface area, will move slower and be less efficient. Blades with too little surface area, will not

catch the wind as easily and also be less efficient.

Understand that as the wind blows over the turbine’s blades they create “lift” much like an airplane’s wing, and begin to turn.

WIND BLADES

Understand the parts that make up a wind turbine and how they work together.

DEFINING PARTS OF A WIND TURBINE

The blades of the wind turbine spin, which rotates coils of wire surrounded by magnets.

GENERATING ELECTRICITY

Understand in the Gear box, the Low Speed Shaft (Large Gear) is connected to the High Speed Shaft (Small Gear) that drives the generator. The gears boost the rotation speed of the slow to fast speed shaft from 30‐60 to 1000‐ 1800 rotations per minute.

Understand concerns, questions, and positive and negative impacts stakeholders would have when looking at possibly siting

a wind farm in a community.

SITING  A WIND FARM

For example …

What are some major issues that need to be considered before allowing the development of a wind farm?

What are long term benefits to the community developing a wind farm?

What are the risks involved investing in a wind farm?

What environmental factors must you consider before siting a wind farm?

Are there any benefits to building a wind farm on your land?

Howmuch noise do the wind turbines generate?

How would the wind turbines affect surrounding animal and plants in the area?

What economic advantages/ disadvantages can wind turbines bring to the area?

How expensive is electricity from the wind farm?

Know that Wind Turbine Technicians would need to go up in a wind turbine for two main reasons: (1) Routine maintenance and

(2) Service Calls or Specific Problem

Someone would like to pursue a career as a wind technician should study engineering, math, science, and understand

mechanical and electrical principles

Understand how to read a Wind Map

WIND SPEED

There are four main variables that can determine how much electricity a turbine can produce.

1. Wind Velocity    2. Blade Radius    3. Tower Height     4. Air Density
