Overvoltage protection for wind turbinesHighest system availability thanks to graded lightning and overvoltage protection

Answers for industry.

Effective overvoltage protection There are more than a million lightning strikes each year – lightning strikes and overvoltages can cause considerable damage to wind turbines, even complete outages. Thanks to our graded portfolio, suitable lightning and overvoltage pro- tection can be achieved for every type of wind turbine. This prevents financial losses due to the failure of systems and devices.
Comprehensive risk assessmentBased on an in-depth risk assessment, a lightning protection concept is drawn up outlining the most efficient technical measures for lightning protection. Taking into account the lightning partial cur- rents and switching surges, a distinction is made between the various risk zones.
Requirement-based portfolioAll wind turbines need a multi-level pro-tection concept in order to ensure ade-quate protection of electrical equipment. Our type 1, 2 and 3 surge arresters cover every eventuality.
State-of-the-art safety and protection

High system availabilityThrough remote signaling, devices that have been triggered can be signaled to the wind turbine’s communication system. This enables a fast response. The replace-able modules enable the overvoltage protection to be restored as quickly as possible.
Reliable protection of data linesIt is not only the supply circuit equipment which needs to be protected – data lines also require protection. Depending on the communication medium, a range of overvoltage protection devices are implemented.
Our sophisticated protection concept for wind turbines offers a broad and perfectly coordinated portfolio for lightning and overvoltage protection.
Developed in accordance with the respective international standards, we deliver trendsetting design and innovative functions in unrivalled quality.

Extensive protection against damage caused by lightning and overvoltage
Wind turbines are generally the highest point in the landscape or in the water. With an over-all height of up to 200 meters, they are at par-ticular risk of being struck by lightning. It is therefore essential to protect the electrical systems of turbines against damage caused by overvoltage. Our overvoltage protection concept offers a wide range of suitable over-
voltage protection devices that reliably prevent system failures caused by lightning strikes, thus ensuring high operational reliability and system availability. With our products, systems and a lightning and over-voltage protection system optimally tailored to the requirements of your wind turbine, you are always on the safe side.

Safe and reliable protection devices
Protection of the main circuit
Special arrester versions for use in close proximity to the generator and the converter. They are leakage-current-free and insensitive to operational voltage peaks.
Protection of auxiliary circuits
Suitable surge protection devices for a range of mains types and applications.
Protection of sensitive loads
Surge protection devices with ultra strong voltage limitation for the protection of sensitive loads, such as UPS systems, measuring instruments and the power supply lines of controls.
Protection of medium- voltage systems
3EK4 and 3K7 surge arresters offer the best protection against overvoltages in medium-voltage distribution grids up to a maximum system voltage of 72.5 kV.
