Intoday’sageofappsandgadgets,it’slikelythatyouorsomeoneyouknowhasbenefittedhandily from the ubiquitous smartphonein today’s digitally-dependent society. If thequestionwereposedtoourcurrentgeneration,“What itemwould you never want to bewithout?”itisfairtosaythatmostindividualslivingin21stcenturyAmericawouldanswer:“Myphone!”Withoutourphones,itiscertainthatmanyofuswouldbelost.Wewouldbeunabletotext,tweet,phone,email,facetime,and even friend or like another individual.Wouldwereally?IsAmericansocietybecomingsodependentuponthesetechnologicaldevicesthatwearechallengedtoevenrecognizeourourhumanitywithin?Howmanyyoungmenandwomen know the value of the age-oldadage“Neverleavehomewithoutasmile?”Iswhowewerecreatedtobe,insuchcompetitionwithwhatweholdinourhand,thatwehaveforgottenthesimplevalueofkindness-sharedinasmile,ofgratification-bygreetinganotherwithagenuinehandshake?Isittechnologythatpropelsourlives,orarewedoingourbesttoprepareourlivestopropelthetechnologythatsupportsthem?

Regardlessofhowmanyappsandbuttonsand gadgets, and even insurance, we carryon our smartphones, could it be that wehave something even betterwhen it comesto insuring our ability to connectwith thepeoplewelike?Ortobe-Friendthosetowhomwe’re attracted, or bring restitution to thoseun-Friended?Today’s digitally-dependentgeneration has a challenge before them that

nonebeforehaveknown.Thatis,beingabletosuccessfullypairtechnologywithcommoncourtesy.Rememberingwhatourgrandmotherstaughtusaboutthecivilitiesoflife(carriedinourhippockets)mayapplymoretoday,thananyappcouldeverprovide.Butpairingtheartofcivilitywiththecurrentageoftechnologyrequirespractice.The21stcenturycanonlygetbetter as those old-fashionedmannersmaketheirwayfromourpocketstothepersonnexttous.Afterall,thewordswespeakarefarmoresignificantthanthetechnologythattransmitsthem.Whynotpolishafewpointsofetiquettethissummerandcomplementyoursavvyskillson your smartphone?Bydoing so, you andyoursmartphonemayjustmovefrommerelygettingthemessagedelivered,todoingsowithprinciplesthatshapeourcharacterandimproveourattitudesaboutbothourelectronicdevices,andthelivesofthosewhousethem.

TIP #1-Whenyoutakeacallinthepresenceof another person, you are communicating,“Youaresecondary;thecallerismoreimportantthanyouare.”Ifyouareexpectingacall, letyourcompanionknowinadvance,andexcuseyourselfbeforetakingthecall,limitingthecalltounderoneminute.Neveruseacellphoneonadate,unlessthereisanemergency.

TIP #2 - Ifyoufinditnecessarytouseyoursmartphonewhiledriving,makeitahabittogetintoyourcar,buckleup,andprepareyourhand’sfreedevicetoactivatethecallBEFOREstartingyourengine.

TIP #3 - Allowyourpersonality,notyourPDA to impressothers.Avoidusingnovelty

ringtones, and choose the vibrate option asmuchaspossible.

Petnutrition andpet food selectionhasimproved significantly over the last fewyears,however,thereisstillalotofconfusionregardingwhattofeedourfour-leggedfriends.

Following the horrific melamine petfood recalls of 2007,much research hasbeendedicatedtolearningmoreaboutpetnutritionandhowpetfoodismanufacturedand distributed to consumers.This hasspawnedagreaterselectionofhigh-quality,pet super-foods. However, it has alsopromptedsomecompanieswhostillmakecheap,low-qualitypetfoodtosimplychangetheir packaging to dupe consumers intobelievingthatthey'rebuyingfoodfilledwithwholesomefreshmeat,fruits,andvegetables.

Don'tbefooled!Aprettybagwithpicturesof cascading corn and carrots does not aqualitypetfoodmake.Readtheingredientlabeltoseewhat'sreallyinthebagandinyourpet'sfoodbowl.

Here are some things to look for in theingredientlabelandtoconsiderwhenchoosingafoodforyourfurryfamilymembers.

PROTEINA named protein and/or proteinmeal

should be first on the ingredient list. Forexample,ifyou'rebuyingachickenformulapet food, look for‚"chicken‚" or‚"chickenmeal," as the first ingredient, not chickenby-product.Remember:mealisagoodthing,by-productisabadthing.Also,ifaproteinsourceisnotnamed-beware.Forexample,iftheingredientlabelreads,"meatmeal‚"youhavenowayofknowingwhat theproteinsource is and shouldbewary. It couldbeanything fromaardvark tozebra.Thebestpetfoodshavetwoorthreeproteinsourcesinthefirstfiveingredientslisted.
