MANAGING NATIVE SEED SOURCES AS A CRITICAL NATURAL RESOURCE

GLENS FALLS - Seed collection isn’t a new science; it has been going on since ancienttimes. But why is it so important today? Native seeds provide many benefits to wildlifeand the native ecosystem for diversity. Native plants offer many positive aspects to thelocal flora and fauna for food and cover - seeds, nuts, fruits, nectar, and as a host plantfor many species. For example, ash trees alone offer a habitat for about 150 native Lep-idoptera (butterfly and moth species), and 44 arthropod (insects and spiders) that solelyneed ash trees for survival. Speaker: Edward Toth, Director Greenbelt Native Plant Cen-ter, and the Director of Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank (MARS-B), will present infor-mation on conservation and use of ecotypic seed as well as a bit of history and sciencebehind the benefits of using local /native genotypes. This program is being cosponsoredby New York Forest Owners Association, Southeastern Adirondack Chapter; Cornell Co-operative Extension, and Capital/ Mohawk Partnership for Invasive Species Management(PRISM). This program is free and open to the public, at Crandall Library, CommunityRoom in Glens Falls on February 1, 2014 at 2 p.m. For further information please contact,Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County at 518-885-8995.

Here in Upstate New York, gardening in the winter comes in the form of fantasy and anticipa-tion. The gardening catalogs continue to arrive in the mailbox. Hours are spent reading about, circling, and ooh-ahhing over the varieties offered. This is the time of year when great plans are made. It’s easy to get carried away with all these tempting offerings. I’ve found that all these

a great way for budding gardeners to get an idea of what types of plants they might like in their gardens. To try to sell you, catalogs must provide cultural information along with a sales pitch. This is a great way to get a feel for the growing requirements of different families of plants.

Once our seed packets have been procured, we need a plan for planting them. Many of them can be sown directly into the garden once the weather warms up. Around here, that means June. Considering how short the growing season here is, many of us will opt to start our seed indoors

when do we start our seeds? This information is almost always included on the packet that the seeds came in. For instance, a marigold pack might say:”For best results, start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before planting date.” The beginner will say,”Yeah, well what day is that?” The average date of the last frost in much of Saratoga Co. is May 20th. In the city of Saratoga Springs it may be a week or more later. In Vischers Ferry it may be a bit earlier. Using May 20th as our

Considering the great variety of seeds available, it would be impossible to cover all aspects of seed starting in this small space, but I would like to address some of the key concerns.

Always use sterile soil. Soil from outdoors or bagged topsoil is not appropriate for seed starting. The best choice is a light, sterile seed starting mix made from milled sphagnum with vermiculite

planted seeds as added insurance against damping off (a fungal disorder that can kill seedlings). This is not the same sphagnum moss you would buy in a bale for outdoor planting, but a very

Most seeds need temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees, day and night, to germinate. The actual temperature varies for each seed type, so check the seed pack or catalog to be sure. Af-ter the seeds sprout, the temperature requirement is generally about 10 degrees lower than the germinating temperature.

The biggest mistake beginners make is underestimating the light requirements of the seedlings.

seeds germinate. Then, when the seedlings are about 1/2” tall, move the lights up (or the trays down) so that the bulbs are 4” to 6” above the tops of the plants. As the seedling grow, keep adjusting the lights so the are always 4” to 6” above the tops of the plants. The lights should be on from 12 to 16 hours each day. Timers are available to turn the lights on and off. Using timers insures that the plants receive the same amount of light at the same time each day.

Avoid overwatering. Seeds need moisture to sprout, but young seedlings are susceptible to damping-off if kept too moist. Seedlings can tolerate some dryness but will fail quickly if drowned. You should always check the soil before watering. Some gardeners prefer a heavy

so the seedlings have a chance to dry before dark. This will lessen the chances of damping-off. I prefer to bottom water by pouring water into the tray containing the potted seedlings. After a few minutes, the soil becomes moist, but the surface of the soil is dry. I’ll use a cotton cloth or

Many gardeners do a great job starting their seedlings indoors only to have them fail when they are moved to the garden. This can often be traced to a lack of “hardening off”. Seedlings grown indoors under lights need a period in which to become accustomed to real sunlight, wind, and other conditions not found inside. Find a shady, sheltered spot and give the seedlings a few days

55 degrees), move them in until morning. Gradually move the seedlings to brighter locations until it’s time to plant them in their permanent home.

DID YOU KNOW?Valentine's Day is a popular time of the year to send greeting cards. According to theGreeting Card Association, around 145 million Valentine's Day cards are exchanged an-nually. While that is an impressive number, Valentine's Day actually comes in second asthe most popular card-giving occasion. Christmas tops the list with some 1.6 billion cardspurchased, including boxed card varieties. Other popular occasions to send greetingcards include Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduation, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and St. Patrick's Day.DID YOU KNOW?

Approximately 110 million roses, mostly red, will be sold and delivered in three days sur-rounding Valentine's Day. The reason red roses are so popular is because they were thefavorite flowers of Juno, the Roman goddess of love. There are nearly 900 acres ofgreenhouse dedicated to the production of fresh-cut roses in the United States. One acreof greenhouse rose production in the United States is valued at about one million dollars, which includes the value of the plants, greenhouse structure and land. Although Califor-nia grows 60 percent of the roses in the United States, the majority of those bought forValentine's day will have been shipped from South America.

YOU CAN LEARN A LOT BY LISTENING TO YOUR CARNAPSI)—Drivers who listen closely will find that their car is actually communicating withthem by using a language all its own. Sounds such as squealing, thumping, hissing andgrinding are all signs that your vehicle may be trying to tell you something. That’s the word from the experts at the Car Care Council. While many motorists are fa-miliar with noises their vehicles make on a daily basis, any noise that is new, different orsuspicious may indicate a problem. For example, a high-pitched squeal that stops when pressing on the brake pedal is asign that a vehicle’s brakes should be inspected. The same goes for grinding that couldbe the result of worn brake pads that should be replaced.Thumping that increases and decreases with the speed of the vehicle could mean a tripto your local service center. The diagnosis may be a tire problem like a bubble in thesidewall or torn rubber that could lead to a blowout.

Under The Hood As WellSounds under the hood can also indicate that your vehicle is in need of attention. Hissingmay be caused by a disconnected or cracked vacuum hose. A squealing noise whilerevving the engine could be due to a slipping drive belt. Inspection and repair will allowyour vehicle to operate more safely and efficiently.“It’s important for car owners to listen and act accordingly when their vehicle speaks up,”said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “By checking out what your vehicleis saying, you can take care of the problem now and avoid a breakdown or more costlyrepairs later.“The number of sounds a vehicle may make is endless, so when your car is trying to tellyou something, it’s important to be alert, listen carefully and take action,” added White. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumereducation campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and re-pair to consumers. For more information, visit www.carcare.org.

A WORD TO THE WISE: WINTERIZE(NAPSI)—Savvy drivers know it’s wise to winterize their car before the cold weather hits. That’s the word from experts who say investing an hour or two of your time to have yourvehicle checked is all it takes to have peace of mind.Plus, it’s an investment that pays dividends when it comes to avoiding the cost and has-sle of a breakdown during severe weather.Says Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council, “A vehicle check before the tem-peratures drop is a sensible way to avoid being stranded out in the cold and the unex-pected expense of emergency repairs.”

Winterizing Your VehicleTo help, the Car Care Council recommends the following tips:• Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance.• Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done every two years.• Inspect heaters, defrosters, lights and wipers.• Check the brakes, tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem inyour area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads.• If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in.• Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks. Be diligent about chang-ing the oil and filter at recommended intervals.• Keep the gas tank at least half full at all times. And stock an emergency kit with an icescraper, jumper cables, flashlight, flares, blanket and needed medication. For a free copy of the council’s “Car Care Guide” or for more information, visit www.car-care.org.
