2019 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAM
Safety, Quality, Service
Wilson Construction Company (Wilson) is an electrical utility contractor specializing in the construction of overhead and underground electrical distribution and high voltage transmission powerlines for utilities and power providers across the United States. The corporate office is located in Canby, Oregon. Other offices and warehouse facilities are located in Rancho Cordova and Murrieta, California; Tempe, Arizona; Spokane, Washington; and Woodburn, Oregon.
Wilson has a combined fleet of over 1,400 pieces of highly diversified and specialized equipment and vehicles, including a fleet of helicopters and three fixed-wing aircraft. In 2019, 542 employees were working at our facilities and on construction projects.
Sustainability Program Overview
We are committed to providing information to our clients, regulators, business partners, and interested members of the public about the content and performance of our Environmental Sustainability Program (Program). Wilson developed the Program to ensure our business practices reflect our corporate philosophy of minimizing impacts to the environment through avoidance, protection, and sustainable operations at all levels of our organization. As part of the Program, we track resource use, set annual sustainability target goals, measure performance, develop sustainability-focused improvements to business practices, and publicly report the findings on an annual basis.
The Program is managed by our Environmental Department managers, in coordination with corporate leadership. Wilson’s Environmental Department was established in 2005 and is staffed with professionals specializing in environmental compliance management as it relates to the utility construction industry. The staff ensures environmental compliance at our facilities and construction sites. Through our efforts working closely with construction personnel, we are able to minimize impacts to sensitive resources during construction.
Environmental Department managers review the Program on a quarterly basis to determine whether mid-year adjustments are needed. Performance results are discussed and evaluated with corporate leadership annually, providing opportunity for further refinement to the Program where needed.
Key Program Components
The Program comprises four components: (1) Sustainability Policy; (2) Resource Usage and Goal Setting; (3) Environmental Practices and Compliance; and (4) Sustainability Performance Reporting.
A. Sustainability Policy
Wilson incorporates environmentally sustainable business practices into the daily operation of our company. The Environmental Department maintains the Program and collaborates with employees from various departments to identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, reduce resource waste, and monitor and adjust company activities to reflect measurable sustainability targets and initiatives.

B. Resource Usage and Goal Setting
Environmental sustainability performance, in terms of resource consumption and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) production for both office and project usage, is tracked and reported annually. This consists of the following:
Energy Consumption
o Electricity o Natural Gas o Fuel (Vehicle, Equipment, Aircraft)
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions
o Scope 1 (Direct Emissions) o Scope 2 (Indirect Emissions)
Water Consumption
Waste Generation
o Non-Hazardous (Generated and Recycled) o Hazardous (Generated and Recycled)
For each resource, we develop and monitor annual reduction targets to ensure we are continually setting and meeting the expectations of our ongoing commitment to environmentally sustainable operations. Those target goals are provided in the tables on the following pages.
C. Environmental Practices and Compliance
Wilson employs environmentally beneficial business practices as part of daily operations. These practices enhance our commitment to environmental stewardship and include product reuse and recycling, preferential purchasing for North American-sourced products to reduce transportation impacts, and facility and equipment-related energy conservation standards.
Environmental noncompliance is tracked and reported annually. In 2019, there were no environmental compliance violations. Wilson will continue to provide environmental awareness training to employees to ensure compliance rates remain high.
D. Sustainability Performance Reporting
A key component of the Program is the external reporting of performance results on an annual basis. This provides transparency of environmental commitments and educates clients, regulators, business partners, and interested members of the public regarding our emphasis on environmentally sound business practices. Our annual sustainability data is posted on the website www.ecodesk.com and the summary program report can be found on our company website www.wilsonconst.com/services/environmental-services.
The sustainability and GHG reporting program was initiated in 2015, using a baseline data year of 2014. This report provides the new data for 2019. GHG Protocol calculating tools were used and an organizational boundary was adopted that includes all Wilson facilities and US projects. Operational control boundaries include all Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for facilities and company-owned equipment. Data for energy consumption (Table 1), GHG emissions (Table 2), and waste generation and recycling (Table 3) is provided for all facilities and projects for which Wilson has operational control.

Voluntary Reduction Goals
In 2014 Wilson established five-year reduction goals in three categories of resource use and emissions for the year 2020: water, electricity, and GHG emissions from fuel. Wilson intends to reduce water use by 1% per employee and electricity use by 1.5% per employee (Table 4) by eliminating loss occurring through faulty equipment, upgrading equipment with more efficient parts, and through employee education to encourage conservation.
The greatest source of GHG emissions comes from consumption of gasoline and diesel in vehicles and equipment. In 2014 we identified an opportunity to reduce our generation of GHG emissions by 1.2% per employee over a period of 5 years (Table 4) by reducing the amount of time that vehicles and equipment idle while not performing work. Employees are encouraged through education outreach to reduce non-productive idling.
