Ed Laivo, Four Winds GrowersThe end of the housing market crash left uswith a lot of losses. In my mind none wasgreater to our industry than the loss of thebackyard. The once large backyards perfectfor barbequing, swimming pool and largevegetable gardens have been downsized sothat only the economy size of all thewonderful backyard joy can fit. It is notunusual for even a simple air conditionerunit to barely fit into some of today’sbackyards. So, what is a homeownerdesiring fruit trees to do? ESPALIER ofcourse!

Yes, the espalier never has had a moreimportant role then it has today. Growingfruit up against a flat surface is an age olddevice that provides a great look, lots offruit and offers an opportunity for futuredisease and pest control. Most all fruit typescan be espaliered. The classic apple andpear are, of course, the first varieties onethinks of, but how about the cherry? Notmany think of the cherry as an espalieredtree but the Japanese have used them thisway for hundreds of years.

If you are thinking of growing a fruittree flat against a fence in your back or side

yard, leave at least 2 feet between the fenceand any surface that requires maintenance. The easiest way to train an espalier fruittree is to a fan shape. Peaches, nectarinesand plums can all be grown using thistechnique. The fact is, most fruit can begrown as a fan and summer pruned to keepproducing for many years. This style ofespalier is not traditional, but is no lessbeautiful or functional and is very easy tomaintain. The cherry is most often trainedthe more familiar way as multi-tiered, orwhat’s referred to as Cordon style.

Citrus can also be grown as an espalier;oranges, lemons, limes and mandarins allmake great flat grown fruit trees. Select asite where a screen is needed and train thecitrus to grow taller to block out anunwanted view. Blocking views is a goodreason to plant espaliered fruit as it willtake less total space than a hedge.

A more unusual fruit to espalier is thefig. Figs are one of the easiest of all the fruittypes to grow flat. Black Jack Dwarf, VioletD Bordeaux and Petite Negrone are alldwarf varieties that are easy to train. Thelarger varieties also make good candidates.Try Brown Turkey, Excel or any other ofyour favorites. Pomegranates espalierbeautifully. Try the incredible Parfianka forsomething extra special.

The espalier is already playing animportant role in pest control in vineyards.Vineyards pruned narrow are strung withnetting pre-harvest to cut down on loss tobirds. Covering techniques are being testedto protect tree fruit from damaging diseasesand pests with very promising results. Thevery common Peach Leaf Curl has beencontrolled to 65% using covering practices.Espaliered trees are the easiest way toemploy these covering techniques.

Growing fruit flat can be done using theartistic styles and techniques handed downthrough the centuries or by using systemslike Cordon, developed and refined in the

last few hundred years. It takes little effortto plant a favorite fruit variety and train itto grow flat. Just prune so nothing growsoutward. There are also many styles ofespaliers which require varying degrees ofknowledge and skill.

The cost of afun day at the ball park with friends, familyand colleagues is lower because of ourgenerous Partners. Our partners are a vitalpart of our organization, and we encourageour members to support our Partners by notonly seeking them first while doingbusiness, but also attending our chapterevents so our Partners can cultivate valuablerelationships with our members.

The drought that has gripped the state ofCalifornia for the last three years is nothingnew. The guest speaker at our Novemberdinner meeting, Dr. Lynn Ingram, shared her

insights on the tumultuous history of waterin the American West over the last twentymillennia. In her presentation and in herbook she explained that California has ahistory of past droughts and deluges andmade predictions about the impacts offuture climate change on water resources.

Continuing on this theme, on April 2Scott Sommerfeld of East Bay MunicipalUtility District will join us to discuss howyou and your business can prepare now tosurvive the mega drought that we may verywell be in the beginning stages of right now.He will discuss what the water agenciesprognosticate for our state and what theyplan to do to prepare for an extendeddrought. He will also offer suggestionsabout what homeowners, landscapecontractors, and landscape designers can doto prepare for what many are calling ”thenormal” in water availability in California.

Join us on April 2 and take advantage ofwhat you hear from Scott to help yourcompany and your customers prepare for adrought that may last longer than a fewyears. We look forward to seeing you there.

Plant of the MonthOzothamnus rosmarinifolius

'Silver Jubilee'By Roxy WolosenkoAnother great Australian! Ozothamnus is agreat shrub for foliage and presence. It hassmall silver leaves and white stems. In thespring, the rust-colored flower buds openslowly to reveal small white flowers. Somesites list it as reaching 6 feet by 4 feet, butI've not seen it get bigger than 3 feet by 3feet. It likes average water and is verytolerant of hot, dry conditions. Less waterkeeps it smaller. Its color and texture makeit a great companion to rosemary andlavender.
