Willtek 9101 Handheld Spectrum Analyzer

The 9101 Handheld Spectrum Analyzer provides RF engineers with the excellent performance of a workbench analyzer in a handheld form, at a competitive price.

One instrument for all your needs

• Used in mobile phone repair to detect and locate faulty mobile phone parts and components.

• Used in R&D labs to assess the electromagnetic radiation and to verify measures against EMI.

• Used in manufacturing to check and align the output of RF modules or units.

• Used in the field to measure and verify base station emissions.

• Used for installation troubleshooting, repair and maintenance e.g. in wireless local loop and modern 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi systems.

Typical measurements include transmitter testing, alignment of modulators and measuring switch breakthrough. The analyzer is fully controllable via front panel or by remote control from a PC. Measurement results and instrument settings can easily be transferred to a PC for presentation or post-processing.This rugged portable instrument is suitable for indoor and outdoor usage and with its excellent technical data andextensive feature set, meets many application needs.

Comprehensive feature set inone-button measurementWith its clear and easy-to-use operation, the 9101 Handheld Spectrum Analyzerpresents all the measurement functionsrequired to quickly and precisely resolvemeasurement tasks. The user-friendlyinterface with logical softkeys enhancesoperation.

Frequencies are increasing …needn't break the budgetThe wide frequency range from 100 kHz to4 GHz enables testing in RF systems andmodules such as modern wireless localoscillators.

This frequency coverage also captures thehigher harmonics from amplifier or oscil-lator modules, plus any spurious signalsthat can mix and break through into thepass-band. Its complete coverage of car-rier, IF stages and audio frequencies givesthe performance needed when other ana-lyzers run out of bandwidth.

Manual or automatic controlmade simpleControlling the 9101 from a PC is easyand convenient with the built-in RS-232interface and Ethernet port. All functionsof the spectrum analyzer can be con-trolled via the industrial standard remotecontrol SCPI command set.

ConvenienceNo time is wasted in setting up the instru-ment or copying settings from one instru-ment to the other by hand. The 9100 DataExchange Software, which comes with the 9101, supports enhanced manage andtransfer functions.

Channel systems, limit templates, settingsand correction tables can easily be set upand maintained on a PC. The act of build-ing new limit templates and correctiontables is child’s play, using the PC’s mouse.

A live trace can be downloaded from theinstrument at all times. An easy export tostandard graphic formats such as BMPand JPG supports the need for quick docu-mentation of measurement data. Likewise, stored traces can be uploaded to set theunit to the previous measurement set-tings.

Easy-to-read screens make allthe difference in finding signalsThe high-resolution colour VGA display(640 x 480 pixels) is great for finding misleading spurs or aligning modulators. Multiple colours facilitate the comparisonof measurement traces on the screen. Theextra bright 6.5" TFT display has a superb140° viewing angle and provides fastupdates.

Markers help in exactly readingsignalsUp to four markers allow for exact readingof complex signals. The transmitter perfor-mance can be checked, spurious signalscan be detected and sideband levels can beestablished using the four markers withtheir flexibility and clear on-screen dis-play. By pressing Delta Marker second and thirdharmonic levels can easily be checked.Power level and frequency are displayed inrelation to a reference point.

Pass/fail verdict with limit templatesLimit lines simplify assessment of complexdisplayed signals, give users the ability todecide whether the signal passes or fails. These limit templates can be set up with 30 segments. At the same time it can betested whether the signal exceeds anupper and/or lower limit.

Accurate measurements in different RF environmentsWhen making accurate amplitude meas-urements with a spectrum analyzer, it isrequired that any effects that alter the signal of interest between the device undertest (DUT) and the analyzer be correctedwhile measuring. External devices likecables, amplifier, antenna and additionalattenuator can influence the signal level. In the instrument software, the built-inamplitude correction is realised. The"External Device Compensation" functiontakes a list of frequency and amplitudepairs.

Connected linearly, these points offset theinput signal accordingly. This correctiontable can be set up easily with the new"9100 Data Exchange Software".

Easy adjustment onto differentimpedance situationsBesides the 50 ohm world, the 75 ohmimpedance is common in cable TV. The newinstrument software now supports thisstandard too. When switching betweenimpedances the suitable correction tablewill automatically loaded to assure correctmeasurement.

Get more out of digitally modulated signals through RMSchannel power measurementfunctionsThe RMS power measurement capabilityoffers Channel Power, Adjacent ChannelPower Ratio (ACPR) and the OccupiedBandwidth (OBW). ACPR enables measure-ments of the leakage power from a modu-lated communication channel into anadjacent channel.

The occupied bandwidth measurementrepresents the part of the transmittedpower that lies in a specified bandwidth. This measurement function can give usefulqualitative information about the usedbandwidth, e.g. give useful insight intotransmitter operation.

This one-button functions allow rapid measurement and information about thebehaviour of the specified communicationchannel. All significant values are dis-played at a glance.

Additionally, the channel power measure-ment, ACPR and OBW are implemented intothe "Spectrum Analyzer Mode". In contrast to the one-key operation an experienceduser can set the measuring range, the resolution and the sweep time freelyaccording to individual needs. This way, besides defined communication systems, measurements are easily set up when pre-defined communication systems cannot beused.

AM and FM demodulation The presence of audio signals can bechecked by demodulation of AM or FMsignals using Zero Span mode and listen-ing via the built-in loudspeaker.

Digital signal processing with reloadable digital IF RF signals are digitally processed bymicroprocessor and field-programmablegate arrays (FPGA) to ensure both superbaccuracy and repeatability as well as flexibility for future requirements.

Small and portableWith its minimal footprint, the 9101 issuitable for usage both on the bench andin the field. The low weight makes it ahighly portable instrument in the lab andsupports mobile applications in the fieldthat seemed impossible before.

With the Willtek 1500 Battery Charger, additional battery modules can be rechar-ged outside of the 9101. The batteries areeasy to exchange, preparing the instru-ment for many hours of independentoperation in the field.
