‘Willow Tree is not necessarily a likeness, it’s a way of conveying emotion…a reminder of someone we want to keep close, or a memory that we want to touch, or see. I hope that people can recognize subtle expressions or gestures of those they love, and from that, be able to select pieces that are uniquely meaningful for them.’

‘I wanted to sculpt a young couple, finding romantic love – the butterflies and uncertainty, the chemistry and electricity – discovered when you’re in each other’s presence. I wanted the piece to be tender and intimate, elegant and quiet… Since the pose is derived from dance, I also wanted it to appear to have movement as you look at different angles.

My challenge was to carve completely in the round, so that from every view, you have a different understanding… you see variations. There’s no correct way to position the piece.

There are three touch points – their fingers on both hands, and the tops of their heads. I like this bit of connection… the tingly excitement and shared energy that come from moments together with a new love.’

‘I think that a rose is one of the most beautiful natural objects that we can – carefully – hold in our hands. We enjoy the intoxicating scent, the silk-velvet touch, the perfect form. They unfold and give forth their fragrance; they’re intimate and draw you in…

So this piece could be a gift to a mother or friend or Valentine, or someone you’re wishing well. Sometimes it’s nice to give a gift to let someone know that they are a gift in your life.

I wanted the bouquet to be overflowing – more than enough – to express abundant feelings for someone, or the abundant goodness a person shares with others.’

‘This piece is about the strength and permanence of love. The figure’s gesture proclaims, in an outward way, the happiness of being loved… and that love endures – it has, and always will be there.

The etched rock echoes this idea of permanence and strength. Petroglyphs (etchings in stone) were ancient history’s graffiti – a way of mark-making that expressed feelings in a visual way. We value petroglyphs because they have endured for thousands of years. We treasure that which survives the test of time.

So the whole piece communicates a love that is strong, sure and lasting.’

The Zampognaro (pronounced zam-pone-yar-o) is a familiar character in the traditional Italian nativity scene. He plays a zampogna, an ancient shepherd’s instrument that produces a vibrant, lively sound. In small towns during the Christmas season, the Zampognaro gathers people together for carolling and dancing. He is the Shepherd of Good News, bringing joy to the holiday celebration with music and song.
