The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust was formed in 1847 following the purchase of Shakespeare’s Birthplace as a national memorial.

The role of the Trust grew with the purchase in 1876 of Shakespeare’s New Place estate, comprising thesiteofShakespeare’sgrandfinalhomeandNash’s House (the home of Thomas Nash and Shakespeare’s grand-daughter Elizabeth).

The Trust purchased Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, the girlhood home of Shakespeare’s wife, in 1892 and Mary Arden’s House was purchased in 1930.

The last house to be acquired was Hall’s Croft, the home of Shakespeare’s daughter Susanna and her husband, physician Dr John Hall, in 1949.

In 1964 to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth the Trust threw open the doors of its new headquarters and study facility, the

William Shakespeare, (baptised on 26th April 1564, buried 25th April 1616) was an English poet and playwright widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language. His plays are performed more often than any other playwriter and have been translated into every major language.

Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. When he was 18 he married Anne Hathaway who was much older. They went on to have three children: Susanna, Hamnet and Judith (who were twins). His successful career took off in 1585 – 1592 where he was an actor, writer and part owned a company of actors called Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which was later known as The King’s Men. Around 1613 Shakespeare is thought to have retired back to Stratford at the age of 49. He died three years later.

'What is a sonnet?' The sonnet is a poem with three important elements that tell us clearly that it is a sonnet:

• It has 14 lines.

•Each line has 10 syllables.

• It is a rhyming poem, with a strict rhyme pattern.

The two most well-known forms of sonnet are the English (or Shakespearean sonnet) and the Italian (or Petrarchan sonnet). Shakespeare popularised the English sonnet andPetrarchwasthefirstmajorwriterof theItaliansonnet.Sonnetsaregenerallywritten in iambic pentameter.

Iambic pentameter means each line has 10 syllables. Syllables mean a division of words.Forexamplewhenyousay‘cat’youareusing1syllable,‘water’youareusing2:wat-er;‘forever’isthreesyllablesfor-ev-er;andsoon.Awayofrememberingiambicpentameter is to say out loud: ti-tum, ti-tum, ti-tum, ti-tum, ti-tum.
