William Peace University is located in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina. It was founded in 1857 as Peace Institute, offering education for boys and girls in primary grades and to women from high school to college.

The school is named in honor of William Peace, a Raleigh Businessman and church elder, who pledged $10,000 to the Rev. Joseph M. Atkinson in trust for the First Presbyterian Church. The gift was used to establish the Peace Institute.

The Civil War interrupted construction of the university’s Main Building when the Con-federate government used it as a military hospital. After the war, the federal government used the building as the North Carolina headquarters for the Freedmen’s Bureau, which helped former slaves, establish new lives.

Peace Institute opened in 1872, when the First Presbyterian Church regained ownership of the property and repaired the Main Building. R. Stanhope Pullen, a local businessman and philanthropist, who owned the eight acres of land the campus is built on, signed over ownership of the property to the Peace Institute in 1878.

By 1940, Peace offered an academic program for young women that encompassed the last two years of high school and the first two years of college. During the 1960s and early 1970s, Peace College saw its greatest growth with the construction of 11 new buildings and many renovations to existing structures.

Peace College transitioned into a four-year baccalaureate institution during the mid-1990s, awarding its first baccalaureate degree in 1996. Additionally, Peace began offering coeducational evening courses through the William Peace School of Professional Studies in 2009.

In 2011, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to transition Peace’s day program to coeducational and to rename the college William Peace University. The university’s first male students will matriculate in 2012.

William Peace University’s mission is to prepare students for careers in the organizations of tomorrow. On average, more than 90 percent of the university’s graduates are placed in jobs or graduate school within one year of graduation.

The educational experience at Peace goes beyond the classroom. We teach you the skills necessary to succeed in both your professional and private lives. On average, more than 90 percent of our graduates begin careers or pursue higher education within a year of graduation.

New Courses Our new core curriculum includes a focus on ethical decision-making and emphasizes basic knowledge needed beyond graduation. Mandatory courses in personal financial management, media literacy and four years of writing courses within the English department.

Professional Development / Careers A series of three classes focusing on career and professional development is a requirement. Through the Portfolio Seminar Series, you’ll learn how to construct a resumé, build a portfolio, interview for a job or apply for graduate school.

Internships An academic internship related to your major is required, with the goal of combining educational theory with job experience. Research Triangle Park, one of the nation’s most innovative business and technical communities nearby, p rovides internship opportunities in finance, pharmaceuticals and research, sports, law and politics. Sixty percent of graduates report their college internship experience result in job offers.

Advising For four years, your skilled advisor will help you to explore careers, assist with decision-making and provide personal attention to all areas of college life, both academic and social.

Study Abroad Expand your knowledge by immersing yourself in living experiences in countries around the world. A signature summer program at WPU focuses on Mexican culture and civilization while you live and study in Mérida, Yucatán.

Community Service Community service is encouraged, and our students embrace the concept of giving back by reaching out. On average, the student body contributes thousands of hours of community service annually.

“The personal finance and portfolio courses are very much needed for any student attending college. Parents will be proud that these [students] will graduate with that kind of knowledge.”

At Peace, living is learning, and being on campus provides an opportunity for you to hang out with different people, learn about new cultures and thrive on your own in a supportive community. It’s both enriching and educational, with a chance to hone social and leadership skills and to develop enduring friendships.

Residence Halls Get settled in for easy access to classes, food and other college ameni-ties. There’s free basic cable, two Internet lines — including wireless access — and no-cost laundry. First-year housing favorites include Main, Ross and Davidson Halls, each with its particular style and history. Resident Advisers (RAs) live on each floor, ready to answer questions, foster group discus-sions, organize activities and more.

Commuting You don’t have to live on campus to enjoy student life at Peace. Parking is plentiful, and Belk Hall’s lounge is a hotspot for studying or relaxing.

Library The Lucy Cooper Finch Library includes a Learning Commons on the main floor,

which features computer work stations, group work areas and a corner coffee bar. The Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Consortium provides access to libraries at five local colleges and universities.

Meals and Munchies Belk Hall offers tasty, nutritional food options, including a salad bar, deli, cooked-to-order expo station and a variety of daily cooked meals. Peace Perk, the on-campus coffee shop, also offers Java City coffee, sandwiches, snacks and a place to hang out.

Public Safety Campus Public Safety Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, available to escort students, aid motorists and provide any other assistance. The PACER alert system also sends short,

informative text messages to text-enabled cell phones, keep-ing you up to date during emer-gencies and natural disasters.

Spiritual Life Chapel is a vital part of the Peace experience. We encourage you to explore or participate in a variety of worship forms and styles. Weekly services are held in the Dinwiddie Chapel.

Health and Happiness The Wellness Center helps you maintain mental, emotional and physical health. It provides routine treatment for minor illnesses and injuries, monitors chronic illnesses, offers educa-tional programs for the preven-tion of all communicable diseas-es and professional counseling services if you need help coping with the challenges of college life or relationships.
