He was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on August 23, 1921. His family moved to California in 1926. He graduated from Whittier Union High School in 1939. He enrolled in Pasadena Junior College intending to be a mechanical engineer. He transferred to Chapman College to major in Philosophy. He served as a conscientious objector in Civilian Public Service camp no. 56 at Waldport, Oregon. He joined the Fine Arts Group founded by poet William Everson. He co-founded the Untide Press in 1943 with William Everson, actor Kermit Sheets and artist Kemper Nomland. The name, Unite Press came from the journal "the Untide" the group published as a challenge to the official CPS camp journal "The Tide". He became the Assistant Camp Director in 1945. He was discharged from the CPS camp in 1946. He worked with J. H. Batteigger Company in Los Angeles as a wholesale refrigeration equipment jobber. He was promoted as the Sales Promotion Manager at the company in 1947. Meanwhile, he joined the Rounce and Coffin Club. In 1948, he continued his education. He enrolled at the University of California to pursue M.A. in English Literature. He graduated from UCLA in 1950. In 1951, He received his Bachelor in Library Science form UCLA Berkeley. In the same year, he took job as Serials Librarian at Los Angeles State College. Between 1959 and 1965 he worked as a Librarian. The faculty of L.A. State College elected him to the Academic Senate, the first librarian to serve on that body. While he was editor of the California Librarian, the magazine earned the H. W. Wilson Library Periodical Award for the best state or regional journal. Eshelman was librarian and professor of bibliography

Biographical NoteWilliam Robert Eshelman was a pacifist, librarian, printer and editor who actively participated inpreventing censorship, ending racial segregation and protesting the Vietnam War. at Bucknell University from 1965 to 1968. He joined other librarians in protest against Vietnam War.Eshelman was the editor of Wilson Library Bulletin from 1968 to 1978. In California, he chaired theLibrarian Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee. The committee opposed censorship effortsof lawmakers, initiated the Fiske study of self-censorship in school libraries. He joined the nationaljournals in their efforts to support the desegregation of public libraries in the South.

He was appointed president of Scarecrow Press from 1979. He retired in 1985. Eshelman editedand transcribed the correspondence between librarian and writer Lawrence Clark Powell and WilliamEverson. The correspondence is titled ‘Take Hold Upon the Future’. Scarecrow Press published it in1994. Scarecrow Press published his autobiography, ‘No Silence’ in 1997. Eshelman served on theeditorial board of Choice Magazine, published by the American Library Association (ALA). He was alsoa member of the ALA Council and the ALA Committee on Accreditation. William Eshelman passedaway on 9 August 2004 at his home in Portland, Oregon, aged 82.

Content DescriptionThe collection consists of Eshelman’s work on documenting the Fine Arts at Waldport camp andcorrespondence and documentation relating particularly to Civilian Public Service; it includes publishedmaterials, notably of the Untide Press; contains correspondence of William Everson with LawrenceClark Powell and Edwa Everson; also includes Eshelman’s correspondence with Kermit Sheets,Kemper Nomland, Vladimir Dupre, Glen Coffield, Lawrence Clark Powell, William Everson, Tom PolkMiller, Adrian Wilson and Joyce Lancaster; this collection also contains his poetry, speeches, cassettes,photos relating to CPS camps, bookplates, small press journals “little magazines”, library related andpersonal materials. .
