My name is William Davis

You can call me Will

For as long as I can remember Ive been interested in design and all areas involving a creativeprocess. This is undoubtedly the reason why I have fallen in love with Design, Photography, andVideography.

The ability to work well within a group, particularly with fellow designers, is an invaluable skill topossess. Luckily, it is one which I enjoy. My condence and ability in group work has been sub -stantially boosted through my involvement in the Rio Tinto project. Take four masters studentsfrom the other side of the globe and one undergraduate from UTS, a complex design brief andonly 4 weeks to complete the project; many would see this as a recipe for disaster. Rather, it wasan opportunity for me to not only hone my design skills but also my ability to work well within agroup. I recognised my personal strengths, such as photography, sketching and videographyand used them to the benet of the group and project. I also felt that I was able to help focusgroup discussion when there seemed to be a lack of direction.

My approach to design very much focuses on lateral thinking. When presented with a designbrief, my rst instincts are to strip back the issue surrounding the design and what is being asked ofme. This allows me to approach design with a sense of clarity and develop clear ideas of wheremy designs are heading.

My time working in the eld of design has given me the opportunity to develop a unique stylewhich clearly shows in my work to date. My aesthetic style is dictated by my need to draw atten-tion to key features in designs, all the while paying attention to the smaller details and adding ina touch of elegance and crispness along the way. I design with the intention to communicatecomplex ideas and functions in a simple, understated manner while still managing to convey athoughtfulness at each designs core.

Pancake mix packaging designed to target children

The Brief:

The competition design brief focused around the innovation of packaging focusing ona childs interest and using a child as a focus for the packaging. The product must beinnovative and could t will into the existing market.

My Approach:I My attention turned to the memorable and ritualistic Sunday breakfast, whichcantered upon pancakes. This encouraged me to look back at my childhood andasses how it could be come a more child oriented and exciting product.

Most of the existing packaging followed a very utilitarian and simple approach, and Iwanted to develop a more ergonomic and iconic form to pierce the current market.

Final Concept:The nal concept draws upon the idea of creating shapes out of the pancakes to

entertain young children. The small nozzle allows a parent to create more complexpancake shapes. The double nozzle shape provides the ability to change betweenstandard circular pancakes and intricate pancake shapes.

Refection:

I feel the lid form and mechanism works well, however some rening of the hinge

design could lead to a more streamlined shape.

PrescientRio Tinto Sports Innovation: Sydney 2013

A sensory substitution prosthesis for the visually impaired

The Brief:

To design a product with the purpose of making football more accessible to a wideruser group. This could encompass specic disabilites or the general public.

Our Approach:Our group contained 5 people; 4 masters students and myself. We focused onblind football as a sport due to its novel appeal but also based on our interest ofneuroplasticity within the blind and the ability to read braille.

We wanted to try and provide a solution which could develop with the increasing ofhaptic feedback awareness through neuroplasticity.

The approach was mostly experimental due to the small time constraint of 4 weeks.

Final Concept:

Basic navigation tools for the visually impaired such as the white cane have notchanged signicantly for over a century. Whilst being inexpensive and intuitive, they

have been largely untouched by advances in science, design and engineering, andare particularly unwieldy for sports. Prescient aims to revolutionize this by equipping the

visually imparted with a new sixth sense of navigation.

Employing advances in neuroplasticity the ability of t he brain to rewire itself inresponse to changes in behaviour, or environment Prescient offers real-time senseof physical space through tactile feedback. With practice, it may even be possible toentirely compensate for the disability

Refection:

Our nal prototype demonstrates the potential for our product outside of the sporting

arena and into the general public sphere for use within mining, military or othermedical areas.

A modular knife storage system with an iconic knife design

The Brief:

To design a set of knives and corresponding knife block while being conscious of

consumer needs within the homeware market.

My Approach:I was initially led by the simple need of having a secure form of knife transport foryoung chef apprentices on public transport although the very small brief made mereconsider a broader need of safe knife transport and storage.

While speaking to the staff of Macphersons, they were interested in developing aniconic image for the Wiltshire brand.

Final Concept:The nal concept follows the idea of a knife and knife sheath being sold as a singular

unit. The knife sheath would serve as a cover which could be placed into a draw, oralternatively the user could buy a corresponding knife block to store both the sheathand knife.

The nal knife handle design provides Wiltshire with an iconic image that can be

identied by its geometric shape.

Refection:

The form of the handle could be rened to be more ergonomic with while the knife

sheath locking mechanisms could be rened to provide a more secure t.

A sharps retrieval system to reduce back strain and needle stick injuries

The Brief:

To analyse and design a product and process to help sharps retrieval teams in beingmore efcient and safe.

My Approach:The process to contain a sharps waste on the street is disjointed while also being aconsistent strain on the retrievers back. The retriever must place the sharps bin on theground next to the waste, stand back up and use tongs to handle the waste into thebin. I wanted to provide a more streamlined approach that reduces the ammount ofbending needed.

Final Concept:

The GG Wheel provides the retrievers with a simple, safe solution by keeping the sharpsbin low to the ground and away from the body while still having total control of itsposition. All the retriever must do is roll the GG Wheel next to the sharps waste, usingthe tongs to place the waste into the bin and then continue moving.

The sharps bin is easily removed and replaced once it has been lled while also

allowing the handle to be swapped for varied dexterities.

Refection:

I think I more rened design for changing the direction of the handle would provide a

more complete design solution.

A 3D Chess Model Concept

The Brief:To design and model a full chess set.

My Approach:I enjoy intricate small gurines and I like when a chess set has two opposing sets

of characters with different aesthetics outside of the traditional black and whitejuxtaposition.

I envisaged what could personify the idea of a white angelic team and a black evilteam clashing in a miniature world.

Final Concept:

The nal aesthetic focused on owing lines like a ribbon in the wind. The opposingteams reected the concept of being on a battleeld with juxtaposing phsycial

aesthetics while using the ribbon and soft surfaces as a cohesive feature

Refection:

I belive the two sides provide adequate stylistics qualities for a virtual chess set,however renement of each piece would be needed to produce the phsyical

product.

The Brief:

To design and create a life like render of a bottle of your choosingMy Approach:Vodka is often packaged in incredibly glamorous bottles and I wanted to try executea design with similar aesthetic language as existing bottles.The bottle was to be unique with elegant qualities that could t into the current market

Final Concept:

YOUR Vodka has two openings; one for pouring and the other for air ow to producea continuous ow of liquid. The corks provide an afuent aesthetic while the blue hue

creates a calming sensation.
