WILL YOU HELP THOSE WHO HELP YOU? BY DOHYUN KIM

When your best friend is hurt, do you care for them, and ask if they are okay? Well, if you help your friend, why not do the same for an animal that needs you? Take a while to care for the animals, and it will be your friend. Many children and adults love animals. They take many as pets. What about the animals that live near you, but are in danger and suffer so much more? As the human population increases, so does the demand for natural resources like wood, coal, or oil, etc., and we become desperate for more. Getting them isn’t easy. The process is very harmful to the animals because we are partly responsible for the destruction of their homes. A fifth grade student from the American School in Japan (ASIJ), Mailie Saito believes that, "It’s not fair for the animals." Exactly. How would you feel if your home was destroyed, for others' desires? Not so good, I think. Something is wrong about the choices we make.

Next time, you visit a store, think carefully about where the products have come from and if it's really necessary to buy. The wise choices you make will bring a big change to the world when the help is gathered together, though a small action itself. "Change happens by listening and then starting a dialogue with the people who are doing something you don't believe is right." This quote from Jane Goodall, a famous scientist who spent her life with chimpanzees, supports my thinking. "People and animals should be treated the same way," says another student from ASIJ, named Jackson Stoner. As a living creature, animals have the same right as people. I think that people overcoming animals are wrong. Some people give their whole life to save the animals living on Earth. The action would be helpful, or you can volunteer. One-third of the people I interviewed are serious enough to take the problem as a career and help the animals, one-sixth are not sure, and one-half are willing to volunteer part-time. As you can see, most people are willing to take action. You may think that your action won’t make any difference to the world. "If it’s only me, there will be no harm." The problem is that there are billions of us feeling like that. Our inaction affects the Earth and makes it worse than you believe. If you think your small actions will bring a change to this world, you will be able to "Save The Earth!"
