hen I was young, my mother took me and my brother to see our very first

live theatre production. It was at the SeattleChildren’s Theatre, which atthe time was playing in thevery small Poncho Theatrelocated at the Woodland ParkZoo. I must have been 7 or 8at the time and the experiencewas so different than anythingelse I had ever experienced. I distinctly remember all theexcitement of getting dressedup (as much as a 7-year-oldcan), driving all the way acrosstown, and sitting in a small, butnicely appointed theatre. Withall the anticipation in the roomof the other children and theirparents, I was sure that something incrediblewas about to happen. And then, it did - thelights went down, and the stage lighting cameup. I was entranced by all of the fascinatingscenery, colorful costumes, and larger thanlife characters that commanded the stage.

Years later (almost too many to count),here I am, with this incredible opportunity tohelp make that magical afternoon happen forsomeone else’s daughter or son. We have so many chances this season for you to introduce the younger members of your familyto the enchantment of live theatre. Our CivicYouth Theatre production of Nancy Drew: GirlDetective plays in the Parish Theatre fromOctober 18th through October 26th. Best foraudience members age 8 and up, this wonderfulstory will not only introduce your child to theatre, but for many it is a great opportunityto watch a literary icon come to life on stage.Other Civic Youth Theatre productions this seasoninclude Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat and TheMagical Adventures of Merlin, the Musical, which

are both excellent choices for audience membersof all ages. Older students might enjoy TheMiracle Worker, and everyone will be enchanted

by Peter Pan which opens theday after Thanksgiving andplays through December 15th.

In addition to our offerings,we are partnering this seasonwith Education for the Arts tobring a professional theatricaltroupe from Australia who willperform a very special piececalled Me and My Shadow.Patch Theatre Company hasbeen producing theatre forthe young since 1972, and we are thrilled to have themat the Civic AuditoriumNovember 5th through the 8th,

for EFA school performances and one veryspecial public performance on Thursday,November 7th at 7:30 pm. Geared for childrenage 4 – 8 years of age and their families, thisis a wonderful opportunity to introduce theyoungest members of your family to theenjoyment of live theatre. This productionincorporates shadow play and lively music totell the story of the fanciful escapades of a little girl who finds a way to be friends withher shadow. Tickets for this one night onlyperformance are available on our websitewww.KazooCivic.com or by calling our box officeat 343-1313. We have specially priced thisperformance at just $7 a ticket so you canbring the whole family.

So whether you choose the Patch performanceof Me and My Shadow, a CYT production, or oneof our family friendly mainstage offerings, Ihope you’ll make the time to bring a child tothe Civic this season and experience theatrefor the first time all over again. – KC

Children love to play with shadows. They are mysterious and magical andcan do amazing things. But making friends with your shadow can be a

tricky business. Me and My Shadow is presented in the form of a visual poemfor children. The show tells its story using the languages of paper, light, shadow, colour, water, music, sound and words. With fantastical imagery, quirky physical performances and an intriguing score, Me and My Shadow, seeks to ignite the imaginations of 4-8 year olds in a poetical experiencethat explores the frustrations and joys of friendship.

WE ARE VERY PLEASED TO BE COLLABORATING WITH EDUCATION FOR THE ARTS TO PRESENT THIS VISUAL POEM FOR CHILDREN PRODUCED BY THE PATCH THEATRE COMPANY OF AUSTRALIA.
